BG vs Buffalo: thoughts, predictions

Post by thewebboy »

With all the discussions about kickoff time, tiebrakers and the band, there hasn't been much talk about the actual game. I thought I'd start up a topic devoted just to the game on Friday.

What are our impressions of Buffalo?
Are we worried about Starks?
How do we feel about our chances?
Do you think the cold weather will be a factor?

I'm just getting the ball rolling, feel free to chime in.

The weather shouldn't be much of a factor for either team. They both should be used to inclement weather. BG 27 - 20. Coach Hofher recruited a lot of the upper classman for the Bulls. We will see if Turner Gill is worth all this hype he is receiving.

Weather update: Friday: High of 30 with snow showers increasing during the afternoon, NW winds 15-20 mph. Chance of snow 70%. Light snow accumulations possible.

Friday night: Lingering snow showers, cold and brisk. Low 17. West winds 10-15 mph. Chance of snow 30%.

Hopefully Jim Hofher's inside scoop on the older contributors for UB will make a difference for us.

At this exact point in the season last year, the week before the Toledo game, we continued our hot streak and took UB out behind the woodshed in Buffalo, 31-17. Our D was great that day, especially Briggs. And just as they are this year, Buffalo was fighting to win the MAC East. Here's hoping history repeats itself, and this time we have them at home to boot.

Turner Gill is worth the hype, and I anticipate a closer game this time around. The Bulls are playing in meaningful games for the first time in their DI-A history and they believe.

But unlike Monday night, on Friday night the brown and orange team from Ohio beating Buffalo will go my way. UB misses a late field goal and BG hangs on.

One more thing to keep in mind weather wise. Cleveland proper is expected to see 1-2 feet of snow off Lake Erie tomorrow, tomorrow night and Friday. This will no doubt have an affect on travel for UB. Even areas like Youngstown are expected to get a lot of snow. Perhaps the Bulls will leave tomorrow in the wake of this?

I'll be a Debbie Downer and admit I have a really terrible feeling about this game. I feel like we'll come out flat and get mauled in the first half, and then not quite have enough to come back at the end.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

It worked before, J4H! :-D

Going to be a very tough, physical game. Buffalo has earned my respect BiG time...they are nowhere near the Buffalo teams of years past. They have talent, desire and a coach that's taught them how to win. It will take all 60 minutes and maybe more to win.

That being said, I think BG is playing their best ball right now...the offense is clicking and the defense has REALLY stepped up. I don't care who we played the last two weeks so don't give me the "Well, it's only Kent State and Ohio" line.

Our boys, as well as theirs, know what's at stake. We've been here before and I think that gives us an edge. Last home game of the SR's careers ends on a great note.

Possibility of maybe a foot in Cuyahoga county. Over a foot in the Eastern 'burbs by a couple, and hammer falling towards PA line.

I'm not sure where you see even close to two feet. I'll wager that the spigot turns off by the time you hit 77. It's always been that way.

Turnovers will be the key to this game. If UB forces more than one turnover, I believe we lose this game. They are one of the best at taking advantage of turnovers. Otherwise, I think we will come to play, and many will be impressed!!!!

I really wonder what effect the weather will have on this game. You'd think that snow and cold would benefit Buffalo with their strong rushing attack. Our run defense has been very hot and cold, playing great against Ohio, Pittsburgh, and Minnesota, but really poor against Akron, Northern Illinois, and Boise State. I'm not sure what to expect there, but our run defense will be key in the bad weather if it comes.

I think the offense has officially turned the corner, and even if the conditions are a bit dicey, our short to intermediate passing offense shouldn't be affected that much. Calling some designed runs for Sheehan will help take some pressure off the offensive line, and we've shown a willingness to do that the last few weeks.

As you all know, I'm probably the biggest critic of Buffalo there is. They've played pretty well this year, and honestly the two MAC games they've lost (vs WMU, @CMU) were both close ones. Of course, the three MAC games we've lost have all been close ones as well. Buffalo is pretty good. However, the fact is that in crunch time when its really counted, Da Bulls haven't finished the job against BG. We've got their number. We haven't lost to Buffalo since 2000, and not at home since 1982. Our guys know what's at stake. The whole season comes down to this game and next, its do or die. It'll be a close, hard fought game, but Bowling Green will be ready to play, and Bowling Green will win this football game.

Buffalo 17
Bowling Green 24

Sorry, folks. I'm with j4h on this one. Unless we play 110% balls to the wall football for 60+ minutes, we don't come away with a win. I haven't seen much from this team that leads me to believe that we'll do this.

I'm with the downers. I've got a bad feeling about this game. This is the most meaningful football game in the history of Buffalo football. I don't think we'll be able to match their intensity. From what I have seen Drew Willy might be the best QB we've played against this year as well.

I'm not expecting a large turnout, so I don't think the homefield advantage will be that great either.

I just have a bad feeling about this game.
