There's no question our non-conference schedule has been lighter this season than it has been in recent years. But with this year's team, I don't mind that and I think it's good for our team. This may not be one of our strongest teams from over the years, but if these kids keep getting wins while improving and increase their confidence, there's no reason we can't have a great year. Looking down our schedule, there isn't a single game we can't win. Now I am not saying we won't lose any of those games, I am only saying we do not have any games that I feel we can't win. It's not like we have a road game at Illinois or Wake Forest waiting for us. I think we have the ability to have a fine season.
There's a lot of basketball yet to be played, no doubt. But I'd love to see us go undefeated in the month of December. We're already 1-0 with our win at Detroit, a place we hadn't won at in a long, long time. We've got Bluffton and IPFW at home and Youngstown State and Oakland on the road. These are all winnable games, but we've got to take them one at a time. I think if we can accomplish this, it could really serve as a springboard into the MAC season in January.
Looking at the MAC as a whole, there really isn't any "heavyweight" teams again this year IMO. There are some good ones again this year, but there seems to be as much parity as there's been in recent years. The league has been winning a good deal of non-conference games so far, and we're probably going to start beating up on each other in the MAC season like always. Right now, I just want to see BG continue to play well and win as many games as we can. As we enter MAC play, I hope we can lock up either a first round bye or at least a home game for the first round, that's what I am hopng for out of these guys. Because once you get to the Gund, anything can happen. But first you've got to get there.
I can't help but to think of how much depth and talent we'd have had guys like Lewis, Moss and Hobson not left over the last two years. I know that's over and we need to focus on what we have, and I am. But despite some of those losses, I must say I am proud of the way our guys have played early on. I really have no expectations for this year's team, and I'm almost enjoying that. I'm just going to try and sit back, watch these guys compete, and hopefully they'll have a great season and use it as a building block for what we're trying to rebuild here at BG - a great basketball program. We've fallen on hard times in recent years, I am just hoping the worst is already behind us. I like the way things are looking right now.
A Perfect December? Turning The Corner?
Nice way start to the season -- but I'm not setting my expectations too high until this club plays a couple of tougher teams and wins. I like the way they play together and have a concept of an offense. Not something we saw last year. More road wins will help convince me we have a strong team.
