Next Season's Roster
Does anyone have an analysis or opinion of the roster's quality for 09'? Just wondering to gauge what our season will be like next season. I really like Sheehan, but if he had more speed, the QB sneak, run and option would be more relevant.
I hate to say it but our performance this season will probably hurt our recruiting potential for the type of talent we had in the past. The sad thing is that we've got the talent, but utilizing that talent needs some fine tuning.

Most recruits are already in and it seems like we have a good class.
We are going to lose quite a bit on D and some playmakers on offense. The Offense will still have all of the backs (minus Turner) and hopefully get back Ransom. Receivers will be fine despite the loss of Partridge. Sheehan is back which is fine.
On Defense we will need to replace A Smith, Briggs, Dozier, Haneline and I think Lewis.
Our entire kicking team will need replaced.

RB - all of our backs, except AT, return, but will we actually use them next year? Bullock, Geter, and Rice have a combined 131 carries on the year for 580 yards. That is not nearly enough carries from your running backs. Overall, we average 3.6 yards per carry. That will not get it done.
WR - Corey is a big loss and Kelley/Parks move on as well. Hutson, Pronty, and one of the credit card thiefs will step up to fill their roles. I hope we can uncover a true threat in the offseason because this offense badly needs a WR that strikes fear in the defense. I just don't see any of our receivers having the ability to make a couple guys miss and take an 8 yard pass and turn it into a 50 yard touchdown.
OL - we lose Curtis and Fink, but I am excited to see what some of the young guys can do. Growing pains will be there, but this should be a good group to build on.
DL - Magnone and Ream return, but we lose Briggs, Davis, and Schaefer. Unless we have some talent and lots of it coming up, we are going to be thin up front.
LB - losing Haneline and Dozier is huge. Basler will fill one of those spots, but I have no idea who else will contribute. Hopefully one of the young guys will come out of nowhere to star for us.
DB - we are going to be really young at corner. Lewis and Smith are both gone. A true frosh (Spencer) is listed as one of the backups on the two deep. We heard a lot about Quiles from last year's recruiting class. Hopefully he steps up.
The kicking game should be an adventure with both guys leaving. Phillips came in and should be the kicker. Punting could be determined by a student contest.
I hope I am not missing something here, but I have thought all year that we lose a bunch of talent this year and I know nothing about the guys behind them. We hear about how great Brandon is in the recruiting game. He better be or next year is going to be much longer than this year.

I think Nicely has potential but i think that Collier has much more...he is supposed to have a gun for an arm and also very mobile, which would work really well with the spread offense. he was being recruited by some bigtime programs as well and chose to come here....and yes it is sad that we are thinking so far in advance

He also had 5 ints on defense.
I had assumed we would see him at RB, WR or DB.

Yeah, I have Collier pegged for a Wr, DB or Rb position more than Qb but who knows. He does appear to have more speed than Nicely who is listed at a 4.9 40.Globetrotter wrote:He also had 5 ints on defense.

At 6'1" and 190 lbs, Collier doesn't have the size the coaching staff likes to run the spread. Nicely is 6'4" and 200+ lbs.drumstix2388 wrote:I think Nicely has potential but i think that Collier has much more...he is supposed to have a gun for an arm and also very mobile, which would work really well with the spread offense. he was being recruited by some bigtime programs as well and chose to come here....and yes it is sad that we are thinking so far in advance

Both kickers are NOT gone
Several folks have mentioned that we lose BOTH our kickers after this year. I believe that Nick Iovenelli (sp?) is a R-Jr. and still has a year of eligibility left. Our programs seem to verify this.
