My email to Coach Brandon
Hey everybody,
After reading this thread, I felt like I needed to say that I agree with all of you in thinking that Coach Brandon was completely out of line with his comments. I cannot believe that a coach who just coached the way he did in the 4th quarter and in OT would dare to criticize the fans. The things he has said in your emails is even more despicable, as it removes any doubt that maybe he was just "worked up" after the game.
The many factors that contributed to poor attendance have already been listed elsewhere, and I won't repeat them, but I agree with the majority here. Some people are diehards and will do everything they can to get to every game. Most are not. I think Coach Brandon hurt his team far more than the fans that didn't show up Friday.
Grant, I'm sure you weren't taking his words to heart anyway, but Coach Brandon's remarks regarding AZZ were ridiculous. Message boards are a great place for fans, and they're also a lot of work. I've only been looking at this since Wednesday or Thursday, but keep it up.
Good luck against Toledo and this basketball season as well.

GB just forwarded me the email of a senior at BG who he felt "gets it". I don't know the kid so I won't post it, but it basically says "I understand and I'm sorry and you're right and we'll get through this and thanks for your hard work." Here is my response to GB.
I can't disagree with any of the points that he makes; and I understand your complete frustration - is there a word stronger than frustration? - at the poor attendance at Friday's game. I'm frustrated as well, being that I'd go if I could and they have the chance and waste it. I remember my last game as a senior. We lost in triple overtime to Toledo, of all schools. When UT caught that amazing pass in the back corner of their endzone, I just sat down and cried. Later I found that my marching band uniform had been stained from a combination of tears and make-up. So, while not in the same way as you, I do understand what this guy is saying and I understand what you are feeling.
But the point I'm trying to make is this: the attendance is a problem. The support may not necessarily be the issue. There are plenty of people who support this team who were unable to attend the game, for reasons you consider to be excuses, but for reasons they consider to be perfectly valid. Who are you or I to judge why someone is unable to attend a football game? With the way things are going in the country right now, reasons we may have considered trivial in the past may seem perfectly legitimate now. But who knows. It's just that the people you intended to call out with the statements you made are the ones in the grey area. Telling them they aren't supportive or aren't fans ISN'T going to fix the attendance problem. It's going to hurt their feelings, much like mine, and is not going to encourage them out for the Toledo game. Why pay $29 to go to the opponent's field for a coach who just insulted me?
I'm not saying you don't have a point. I'm saying the delivery of said point isn't accomplishing much, other than flooding your inbox. It's not a means to an end. You can't alienate the people you are trying to reach.
I just think that your definition of support and mine may vary. Sometimes we can't make it to a game, but we'll stare at gametracker and livestream the feed from the internet, and sit on message boards and share ideas and opinions about what to do and what comes next and why we love BG. Isn't that support, too?
And again, to his defense, he is copying GC on everything. I'm actually curious as to GC's take on the whole thing as well. I kinda feel bad for the guy's email inbox.

ATTENDANCE AND SUPPORT AT BG ARE TROUBLESOME PERIOD.
Let's me share my view. Coach Miller's b-ball team does not get near the support it deserves for being a dominant conference champion and recent Sweet 16 participant. At the same time Coach Miller and his ladies continue to work hard to expand their fan base and those efforts are paying off.
The men's basketball team under Coach Dakich was poorly supported even during their best years (it should have been sell out, sell out, sell out in little AA for every DI, DII and DIII game any night of the week). Coach Orr has not recieved any wonderful attendance since assuming the post but I feel it is building. He connects with people and his players appear happy to be here.
The hockey team hit rock bottom and the attendance is recovering slowly as the program continues to make the slow climb up the standings (cross your fingers for that one). This one is difficult to gage since the arena was expanded as the glory years were shrinking in the rearview mirror.
What has been the formula at BG for good crowds? I remember when a star QB name Brian McClure was cited in the paper for attending BGHS games while setting many BGSU records at the Doyt the very next day. I remember coaches and players who felt expressed honor in competing at BG while winning. They expressed and you felt their sincerity when you met them.
Whinning and losing will not improve anything. The perfect example is Coach Dakich's last few painful years where winning was replaced with whinning. And yet Coach Brandon, who was present for that painful experience, appears to have modeled, what appears to be his last years, in a very similar fashion - lose and whine.
Winning and connecting with the community and the campus will result in more fans. I believe this is the magic formula. And when things are at their lowest (Friday night for example) the whole program needs to make sure those who came feel the appreciation.
If I could help Coach Brandon with his some post game speech writing his opening statement would have been "I wish we could have pulled that one out for the hardy souls who came out and especially those who stuck with us till the bitter end." Nothing more need be said.

Just, disgusted. I am still sour about it and it's damn near 48 hours later. It was my last home game as a student, it was for a chance to beat Toledo for the MACC, and it was a chance to salvage a season gone by the wayside.
The offense ran 40 QB draws. 40!! When that doesn't work, let's run that stupid diamond formation and throw the same rot screen pass. Don't even get me started on GB's statements.
I'm not going to support the football program after my graduation as long as Gregg is here. I suffered through 4 years of his brutal coaching and playcalling. He wants to talk about a winning program? The last 4 years: 6-5, 4-8, 8-5, 5-6 (6-6, 5-7), let's do the math? They'll either be 23-25 or 24-24...wow...some winning program! One bowl game (blow out) and no MAC Championship appearances.
I'm not going to email him because it will accomplish nothing. The man is delusional and will keep doing things the way he sees fit until it finally works, which will never happen.
Toledo's going to hire someone new, and I wouldn't be shocked to see their football program take off. I hope they hire Mike Stoops and further shove it up BG's azz of how bad a mistake it was keeping this bozo around for 3 more years. That's just how I feel.
I love this university and I'll be damn sad when I leave here, but I will choose to leave the football program behind until the adequate changes are made.
As for Mr. Brandon, I went to every home game and numerous road games. My parents have done the same with me, despite your terrible coaching. My mom, God bless her, was crying in the 2nd OT because of how cold her feet were, but she hung around because she loves me and my passion for your terrible program. I leave BGSU with utter disdain for the football program, and I can only hope that the right changes are made and it gets back on track, because right now this program is pretty damn close to running off the tracks and crashing and burning, hell it may already be there.

The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
Brandon, you disgust me H.w is it the fans fault that coming into that game, BG was running its mouth saying they would win their division, nonetheless, the weaker one where Ball State isn't even in it.
How is it the fans fault that you had blown 3 4th quarter leads to Ohio, Miami and Buffalo? They are supportive in every way and to get thousands of fans to come out to watch a 5 loss team on a Friday night with the tempetures getting to be below ten degrees is still great.
you sir are a joke and if I see you on campus, I will let you have a piece of my mind without threats.
How you blame the fans is a coward move. I have no respect for you. I will continue to support the BG football though regetrabbly
to the responses he gave you in his emails just shows how he has no spine and acts like a little baby anytime he gets a halfway hard question dictated toward him. shows he will never make it to a bigger program than this.

JEWCY,
Although we appreciate your input, there is no need for that language on this board. If you can't post anything without swearing numerous times then don't post at all. These boards are to talk about the good and bad but that language will not be tolerated here and even though I dislike Brandon and his coaching decisions and post game comments, I would never use that language myself. Hopefully the moderators will delete this message as it was uncalled for.
Thanks

Yeah... JEWCY... come on. You can be angry, but don't come on here and blow up like this on your very first post. It pretty much shoots your credibility right out of the water. Question on the Brandon kids. By my estimate from their picture in the media guide, I'd say his boys are somewhere between 15 and 19? Now I am not saying they deserve to read their dad getting ripped here, but its not like they are 8, 10 or even 12.SaxyIrishTenor wrote:Dude. We know you're mad, but his kids read this. Brandon has to realize he works as a D1 head coach with school that has a passionate fan base. Maybe not as large as the SEC or Big 12 fan base, but just as passionate at the core. When you take one of these jobs, it comes with the territory. If you can't handle it go back to being a coordinator or be a head coach at the high school level.

Don't feel like digging through the thread to find the quote, but he did say something to the extent that reading and hearing negative things when you're a division one head coach comes with the territory, and he has attempted to deliver this point to his boys that it's all part of the life (so is a membership at BG CC
)
They'll get over it, and as other have said, there is a way to say negative things without being crude and obscene about it.
