With the collapse to Buffalo still burning me up inside (I still can’t believe we blew a 27-7 lead at home in the fourth quarter!!!!), it got me thinking about how frustrating a lot of things have been about this season - despite it still not being over. While the list seems to keep growing by the week, this season just can’t help but remind you how damn frustrating it has been to watch us play at home this season. We played five home games, and lost all but one of them. What’s more, it’s not even so much “that” we lost some of these games, but “how” we lost most of them that makes them downright heartbreaking. Minnesota – turnovers took us right out of it, period. Eastern Michigan – we let them hang around all game, never putting them away, then they killed us with a late drive (sadly, the beginning of a trend). Miami – we get behind early, storm back and nearly put them away, but we leave the door cracked open and they kicked it in on us with a late drive. Kent State – we stopped the bleeding and avoided a winless season at home. Buffalo – we dominate for three quarters and then fall flat on our face with a huge collapse that would be hard to simulate on a video game.
With all of that said, our 1-4 record at home this year tied the 2000 squad’s mark for worst ever in the history of Doyt L. Perry Stadium. Not to be left out, we can throw the 1990 team’s record of 1-1-2 in there for the fewest home wins in a season just for kicks. Those 1990 & 2000 teams aren’t exactly the kind of company any of us could have expected this 2008 squad – picked to win the MAC East - to keep. Sadly, this year’s senior class has stumbled through a four-year span resulting in a home record of just 9-10. From 2005-2008, BG went 2-3, 2-2, 4-1 and 1-4, respectively, at home. The senior class that left BG the year before this downward spiral started (2004) went out with a mark of 21-2 over a four-year span of 2001-2004 going 4-1, 6-0, 6-1 and 5-0. Just two losses in four years and one of them occurred in the MAC Championship game vs. Miami. So the question in my mind now is, how in the world can we get the home field advantage back at BG?

Interesting that the two previous worst home records coincide with the two previous coaching changes prior to Meyer/Brandon.BGSU33 wrote:With the collapse to Buffalo still burning me up inside (I still can’t believe we blew a 27-7 lead at home in the fourth quarter!!!!), it got me thinking about how frustrating a lot of things have been about this season - despite it still not being over. We need the coaches and team to stop being so damn overconfident. Before the Miami and EMU games this year, they came in thinking that they were going to kick the crap out of their opponent and win just by showing up. Then when they got behind, it's like they're shell-shocked, and they have no energy and no pride to come from behind and make things right.BGSU33 wrote:With the collapse to Buffalo still burning me up inside (I still can’t believe we blew a 27-7 lead at home in the fourth quarter!!!!), it got me thinking about how frustrating a lot of things have been about this season - despite it still not being over. It's extremely obvious based on our 4th quarter play that the team thought they had the EMU, Kent, and Buffalo games in the bag and didn't much thought to a potential comeback. We need to actually start respecting our opponents and not take them for granted all the time.

I agree. I remember just several years ago when teams came into BG, they were taken behind the woodshed. There was no letting up, on offense or defense, and we just carved them up and sent them home with their tails between their legs. Lately, it has been extremely painful, and embarrassing, to watch team after team waltz into BG over the last several years and just push us around. Like it or not, Doyt L. Perry Stadium is not “our house” anymore. It’s pretty much been our opponents’, and we’re just playing in it. Both EMU and Miami have recorded just one win this year against an FBS team, and that was us, at home. When you are up by 20 points with under a quarter to play, especially at home, you finish, not fold. We have got to get this turned around, and now.bgsufalcon24 wrote:We need the coaches and team to stop being so damn overconfident.
