BG vs Ohio State
Another great effort on the road against a Big 10 opponent. Lauderdale's size and shot-blocking was the difference, much like Minnesota's inside presence was 10 days ago. I'm not aware of an inside force like that in the MAC, so I think we will be in great shape this winter.
I would like to praise Darryl Clements' performance through 5 games. I was not a fan through 3 years, but he has done a 180 in the early season in my eyes. He is shooting the ball well, handles it pretty well, and really gets after it defensively. He obviously worked very hard in the offseason and it shows.
This team has contender written all over it.

I caught the second half of the game tonight. Nice job by the Falcons of hanging around and refusing to give up.
Just wondering why Knight didn't get any PT given his size and athleticism? Otis was respectable tonight in the paint. Joe Jak was pushing the ball hard the whole game and seemed out of control a lot of times.
Great effort tonight and I like the direction Orr has the team headed. We'll see a lot tougher opponents in the MAC than we saw from OSU tonight.

Agreed on Clements. He's always brought it on the defensive end, but he has really looked good offensively this year as well. His jumper has some arc to it this year and it's falling for him. Let's hope he keeps it up, that would be a very pleasant surprise offensively if we could get 10 ppg from him.BGGrad01 wrote:Another great effort on the road against a Big 10 opponent. DAMN! Close, but no cigar. We certainly had a chance tonight, and man would it have been nice to win this one. The biggest difference was more free throws and blocked shots for OSU as we shot and rebounded right with them all night. I just hope we continue to improve, play well and get a little more offensive chemistry going and we could be a force in the MAC this year. I can't wait for conference play to begin. GO BG!!!

This is going to be a long post.
Just got back after watching the game. Had a great time.
I have OSU student tickets so I was the only one cheering for BG in the student section for awhile. Let me tell you their fans were fine for that. Had it been football I would have been murdered. Decent crowd on hand for BG. Not sure if any regulars from here were there but if so I was the one in the OSU student section for a bit with a black hoodie and a girl with me out of my league.
I ended up actually moving back because you cant even see all of the floor from their student section. My gf couldn't see at all. Those designing the new Stroh Center should keep that in mind. A student section like Anderson not the Schott.
As far as the game goes BG looked decent, and that's amazing for how good of a game it was. I disagree with Grant and think the team did not do a great job attacking the zone or the press. Decent, but not great. There were times where the wings were just passing the ball back and forth and there was no low post cutter or a guy adequately flashing to the high post. Against that length and athleticism you need to constantly be moving and we were drained at times. We did a great job not being intimidated and getting Moten open. This team, with some more seasoning, will be the real deal. I can't imagine there is a team that can compete with them in the MAC if Moten is hitting and Polk is in the post. Everyone else just needs to be adequate, like they were tonight and we will be the class of the MAC. FWIW there were two very bad non goaltending calls.
Some individual player reports.
Jaku-played very well. Handled the ball great and was left alone too much on the press. Isn't a great athlete and will always benefit from having one or two at the wings.
Clements-The epitome of a glue player tonight. Scored, rebounded, handled the ball, played d, and was in the right place at the right time all the time.
Moten-Has become a very good scorer, put up 16 on an off night at a Big Ten team. Had he been hitting from the outside we would have won.
Marschall-I think that Marschall might just be the next BG player to compete for All MAC honors and maybe even MVP. He played just 18 minutes tonight but the feel on the floor was different when he was out there. He is a true athletic big with some offensive touch around the basket. Playing next to Otis Polk will help his defensive limitations.
Polk-Was very good tonight. Troubled OSU's bigs all night
Larson-played 11 solid minutes. Was not a liability and threw his body around. Strategically his minutes will probably gradually go to Madlock with the idea that Madlock will eventually be playing major minutes for this team.
Miller-Consistently inconsistent. At times he was the best player on the floor tonight, at others he was a human turnover machine. Needs to let the game come to him more. Scored when we needed someone to at the end but keyed Osu's run with several sloppy turnovers. His height wont hurt him as much in the MAC were he could be dominate if he settles down.
Brown-Saw just 5 minutes but didnt look bad out there. Can't judge him long term off that but its good to have a guy who can spell Jaku at the very least.
Knight-Saw 4 minutes in the first half and that was it. Did nothing notable in those minutes.
1 Jaku-Brown
2 Moten
3 Clements-Miller
4 Marschall-Knight
5 Polk-Larson
It should be an interesting season for OSU as well. Early season struggles with potentially late season success. The team is in desperate need of a number one scorer and that should be Buford by midseason. At that point Mullens will hopefully start being a little more aggressive. Diebler next to Buford with Crater/Simmons at the point and Lauderdale and Mullens in the post. Thats the makings of a very good team. But until Buford and Mullens develop they have a bunch of number 2 or 3 scorers who are great on good teams but average on bad teams
1 Simmons-Crater
2 Buford
3 Diebler-Lighty
4 Lauderdale-Turner
5 Mullens
Those are huge ifs though. Without those freshmen stepping up this is an average team.
The starters should be
Jaku
Clements
Moten
Marschall
Polk

I'm not going to name each school, but I will say this much, the MAC East is going to be more difficult to win against than Ohio State was for us tonight. I'll stand by that prediction here and now before we even play a single conference game. If we can play as competitive as we did in Columbus in places such as Athens, Oxford, Kent, Akron and Buffalo, I will be very impressed.Globetrotter wrote:Name oneRollo83 wrote:We'll see a lot tougher opponents in the MAC than we saw from OSU tonight.
GO BG!!!
I will try to be brief, but I am so proud of the guys tonight. To have OSU on the ropes in their house and have two leaders have horrendous games makes me feel all the better.
Miller is too short and slow to be an effective 3 against the better competition and not quick enough to guard 2s so we need a serious upgrade at the 3.
Brian Moten . . . God Bless you for shooting the lights out.
Darryl Clements . . . Great leadership, thank you for not being scared and leading.
Otis . . . I told Hammb and my buddy at the game, if Mullens is an NBA Lottery pick, Otis is one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players. Dominated on the block at times.
Joe Jak . . . Solid . . . thought he rushed the final 3 just a bit, but I want either Joe or BMo taking it. Held up much better than I expected.
Marschall . . . Damn, did he miss the memo or what? Erik was stuck in some time warp all night . . . I could've sworn he thought he was playing '88 Georgetown with all those pump fakes. If you're 6'9" or whatever he is and can't get a shot off at this level, why are you on the floor? I'm sorry . . . but damn that was frustrating.
The future looks bright with Coach Orr. Hopefully CKnight can get himself out of the doghouse as he'll be needed to be heard from this year. Athletically he could've made a difference at 3 tonight.
I am a very proud and happy Falcon tonight though. Good things to come!

Knight is trying to progress from that injury. He did not play or practice the whole summer! I think as the season goes on he will get back healthy and do some damage.OptionQB wrote:I will try to be brief, but I am so proud of the guys tonight. Very true of Marschall. But I am not sure I get the time warp reference. He was just entirely too tentative after getting his shot blocked. When he gets over that he will be a prototypical forward for this team. Especially next to Polk.OptionQB wrote:I will try to be brief, but I am so proud of the guys tonight. Bravo. Down by double-digits at two Big Ten schools and battled back in both. This team doesn't quit. I sure would like a crack at OSU or Minn on our floor, but I will just keep waiting.
My only real concern is all the blocks in the paint. Seems like everyone (Marschall, Otis, Larson and Miller) wants to give five or six pump fakes before going up. Attack the basket! Go up strong! All that deekin' drives me nuts. Otherwise, love the effort this team gives.
Finally, I know Nate has been in the doghouse, but he is clearly our best player (free throws excluded) and should be on the floor almost the entire game, as long as he stays out of foul trouble.

Clearly our best player? I don't know about that, I don't think we have anyone that is clearly our best player. For a couple stretches last night Miller looked great. For other stretches he looked like our worst player. He doesn't yet look comfortable operating primarily without the ball, but I want to keep him in that role. He's way too turnover prone when he is trying to run the point forward type role.JWEIII wrote:Bravo. Down by double-digits at two Big Ten schools and battled back in both. This team doesn't quit. I agree whole-heartedly with the lack of aggression by our bigs. They have got to go up strong and finish or take the foul. Those pump fakes are just not working.
