Bowl Eligible
Bowl Eligible
When we beat TU, we are 500 and do we become bowl eligible? They say there are not enough eligible teams. Talking about allowing teams with large fan bases being invited. If so should we accept and where could we go?

Nice thought and I like optimism but no one in their right mind would want the 2008 BG football team to be in their bowl. I think if we went 8-4 it would still be a stretch

If we are bowl eligible why should we not get to go before they waive the rule for for some other team in a BCS league who is under 500. Are there enough eligible teams? We may not deserve to go, but we would be eligible and not have a rule waived to go. We play by the rules and should be invited if no other team eligible.

I looked through the standings, and as most sites are saying, there will be either 70 or 71 bowl eligible teams after everything shakes out. There would probably have to be some serious upsets if there were to be more than that. My guess though is that BG would be one of the 2 or 3 bowl eligible teams not to get invited. We shall see.

Optimists read on! After all, we didn't think a bowl game was going to be in the offing after the '04 Toledo disaster and last year was a surprise event after Miami lost their rights.
But its a stretch to say the least:
ACC - 9 teams. Includes Clemson, not yet BE (bowl eligible)
Big12- 7 teams. Doesn't include Colorado(vs. Nebraska) to qualify
BigEast-6 teams. Doesn't include Louisville (@Rutgers)
Big 10- 7 teams. All BE's, no bubble teams.
C-USA. 6 teams. Includes Memphis and South. Miss both @5-6 but
have winnable games left. Doesn't count UTEP(@ECarol.)
Indep- 2 teams. ND and Navy.
MAC - 5 teams. All BE's so far. Does not count BG and Akron.
MWC- 5 teams. All BE's.
Pac 10-5 teams. Not counting UCLA and AZ State. Neither project to 6-6
SEC - 8 teams. Not counting Auburn (@ Alabama)
Sunbelt- 2 teams. 1 BE, and one of 3 @ 6-6. LouisLafeyette, ArkState, and FATL are the 3. Each could finish 6-6 with final opponents remaining.
WAC- 6 teams. Includes Hawaii, projected to be 7-6
So.... inferences??? Right there is 68 teams for 34 bowl games. BG, Akron and 2 of LouisLafeyyete, Ark St, and FATL are on the outside looking in....ASSUMING ALL FINISH AT 6-6.
Discount Ark St because they had a vic vs. a DI-AA team. That leaves 3 teams on bubble. Could we assume we own a tie-breaker vs. Akron based on regular season head-to-head? Now we are down to BG and probably FATL.So what needs to happen, basically, Memphis and Southern Miss need to tank there last game which I project as very winnable for them. If both do, I think the gods smile on us, if only one does then who the hell knows.
Something for the AD to consider. Take a page from Hawaii, play 13 games to increase odds of getting to 7 wins. Take a page from a lot of other Ad's playbooks and schedule up a DI-AA team....Youngstown, Grand Valley whomever is close enough to give you an extra gate assuming they don't have PATHETIC FANS. It doesn't seem that winning vs. this classification hurts at all.
In summary, I still feel that if we are fortunate enough to beat Toledo that is going to suffice for all the solace we take into the off-season. Which is also known as Hockey season, or Flipper's Scouting Reports season, or 281 days until Kickoff.

There is no other way to finish a season other than yelling at the top of your lungs among BG's players holding the Peace Pipe aloft!

Exactly. We had no business being in one this past Jan. and look what happened. Anyone thinking we deserve a bowl bid THIS year is smoking some amazing crack.hammb wrote:BG has no business whatsoever playing in a bowl game this season. They haven't earned that right.
Besides lack of a bowl game would give us additional time to start finding a new head coach...if we're so lucky.

In order to play 13 games we would have to play AT Hawaii every year, because the only way the NCAA allows you to schedule 13 games is if you play a game on Hawaiian soil (which is why Hawaii plays 13 every year). This is to allow teams to pick up an additional game to help offset the travel costs of playing at Hawaii. Obviously, this is not going to happen on a regular basis.JohnnySwoop '85 wrote: Something for the AD to consider. Take a page from Hawaii, play 13 games to increase odds of getting to 7 wins. For that matter playing 13 games actually hurts your chances of becoming bowl eligible by forcing you to win 7 games instead of 6.
Thirdly, there is a limit to how often you can use a win over a 1-AA school to count towards bowl eligibility. I think you're allowed to count one win every 2-3 years, something like that.
There is plenty the AD can do to help this not be a major issue. All you really have to do is actually field a team that can win 7-8 games every year. With our level of competition, that really shouldn't be a major accomplishment.

No, it doesn't mean that. That's one possibility. Since 8-4 is purely hypothetical, you could as easily have four conference losses, although in that scenario the wins over Pitt, Boise and Minnesota would look pretty good.VDub26Falcon wrote:I disagree because if we're 8-4 that means we're in the MACC Game with only 1 conference loss...that's pretty attractive.
