Ball St vs Buffalo - MAC East Weak!!

Post by zete »

If the MAC championship game proves to be lame, the powers to be will look foolish. For one, when BG was going from the East to the West and West to East then finally settling into the East turned a lot of people off Most close to the BG program didn't like the idea, but BG was granted Toledo to make things right. Let's face it the East is a grouping of Division 1-AA teams. Thus if BALL ST blows Buffalo back across Lake Ontario by the score of 55-14 or somthing like that the playoff game will look like a bad idea and the MAC office will be face with yet another problem. GB's problem with fan disinterest stems from being in the EAST playing teams like EMU, Ohio and Kent which have never been football powers. It equates to lack of interest from the fan base. The state of Ohio is smack in the middle of Big Ten country and the five star players always choose the Big Ten schools that come calling leaving the Ohio Mac teams scrambling for the want-ta-b's.
The league needs to streamline itself. With bowl payout in the MAC being distributed equally nobody gets much. Too many mouths to feed. Thus the struggle will continue with image and money problems. Also look for some of the MAC sponcers to soon pull the plug because of the financial crisis.

BG being in the MAC East is not the cause for low attendance. When I was there during the mid 90's we had attendance issues. Now I'm sure the way the conference was split doesn't help attendance, but that's not the main reason. Attendance has always been an issue. Yes, we are sharing the same territory with the big 10. And because of this, they will have a huge following of bandwagon fans. Many that haven't even stepped foot on their campus. They're fans b/c their friends are fans, or because their parents are fans or because that's what everyone else is doing. Do I wish we had those fans here at BG? Who wouldn't, but the reality, isn't like that. Sure OSU can pull in 100k every saturday. Sure OSU and other big 10 teams will get good talent, but so do we. But to call us, as you put it, "want-ta-be's" is pretty disrespectful. So if we don't play for the Big 10 we're wanna-be's huh? Thanks for your support. So what you're saying also, is if your team isn't a football powerhouse, then you should be I-AA? Here's an idea, be part of the solution, not the problem! Bring some people to a BG football game that never has been. Bring some kids. It still is a good college football atmosphere at the DOYT. Sure, I don't make every home game, I only made two this year. But when I come up, I bring some friends, we tailgate, we have a good time. I don't have to pay $20 just to park. I don't have to pay $45 for a ticket.

Sorry for the winded reply, but it strucka nerve for this former want-ta-be.

Roll along you BG warrior....

I support the MAC wholeheartedly...I was even at Ford Field sitting in the middle of the Western fans cheering to no end. Look, I grew up in BG and been to more BG/MAC games than most. I take people to games all the time. Took 6 with me to Ford Field. BUT I have noticed the interest just isn't there for a host of reasons.
By the way, if the Big Ten would have come knockin' on your door and promised you the world, what would have done? Be honest.
