Bowl Eligibility question
Bowl Eligibility question
So ... if I remember correctly, teams that play non 1-a teams can not apply wins over such teams to bowl eligibility. Example ... NIU is 6-6, but they played Indiana State, not a 1-a opponent. Therefore, they are bowl ineligible, correct?
If I am correct in this, there are 56 eligible teams right now. (I think that's right ... ) and 14 that could or could not be eligible, again I think. If I'm correct in that, we've got a GREAT chance of making a bowl, as 56 + 14 = 70, or 70 max possible bowl eligible teams with 34 bowl games, or 68 teams going bowling.
I love to be optimistic, but all of this just seems way too rosy. Can anybody refute this and bring me back to earth?

You may all now return to your daily lives.

Not sure on the exacts, but you CAN count a W over a 1AA team once and a while, but cannot do it for consecutive years or something like that. or once every 3 years, but something along those lines. So yes, you can count a 1AA win towards your bowl eligibility. So NIU is bowl eligible.
I appreciate your enthusiasm and excitement, but i wouldn't begin to make travel plans anywhere. I think it was 2005 we went 6-5 and were one of two bowl eligible teams not to get an invite (which i thought was werid when we had Omar at the helm thought someone would want a team that could put up 70 points.
Combined with the egg laid in the bowl game last year, i wouldn't be counting on any bowl inviting BG unless they're forced to.

Updates from the past weekends games show us..
10: ACC- 10 BE teams
17: Big 12- 7 BE teams
23/24: Big East- 6 BE teams (L'Ville 5-6 with Rutgers next weekend)
30/31: Big 10- 7 BE teams
36/37: CUSA- 6 BE teams (Mem, So. Miss@ 6-6)
38/39: 1A Indp- 2 BE teams (ND@ 6-6)
44/45: MAC- 6 BE teams (BG, NIU@ 6-6)
49/50: MWC- 5 BE teams (CSU@ 6-6)
54/55/56: Pac 10- 5 BE teams (ASU 5-6 with Arizona next weekend)
62/63/64: SEC- 8 BE teams
66/67/68: Sun Belt- 3 BE teams (La Laf and Mid Tenn play one another, so there will be 4 BE teams, FAU 6-6, Ark State 6-5 with Tory, could be 6-6)
72/73/74: WAC- 6 BE teams (San Jose@ 6-6)
There are 71 BE teams as of right now, with another one coming from Sun Belt (winner of LL and Md Tenn). There will be 72 (maybe 74 w/ASU and L'Ville) BE teams for 68 spots. So assuming all 6-6 teams from the BCS conferences (and Notre Dame) go ahead of any other 6-6 team, that leaves 4-6 teams out.
So at the most count out 6 of these teams: Memphis, So. Miss, BG, NIU, Colorado State, FAU, La. Laf/Md Tenn, San Jose State, Ark State
Not sure about the tie-ins with those conferences, but Ark State/La Laf would be #2 in their conference, have to assume they have a bid.
Also upon research, CUSA has 6 Bowls (how the hell!) so ignore Memphis and So. Miss from the above list. So count out 6, at the most, and 4 at the least, teams from 7 schools (BG, NIU, CSU, FAU, LA Laf/Md Tenn, SJS, Ark State)
MWC has 4 bowls for their 5 teams. Assuming Utah to the BCS, all of those teams will go, so now it's down to 6, at the most, and 4 at the least, teams from 6 schools (BG, NIU, FAU, LA Laf/Md Tenn, SJS, Ark State).
So i guess to not rule out ALL hope, root for Arizona against ASU and Rutgers v L'Ville to make it only 72 BE teams. Meaning that only 4 BE teams won't go. I still assume it'll be BG not getting the invite, but ya never know.
Bowls that don't have a team from their conference eligible assuming 2 SEC, 2 Big 10, 2 Big 12, 1 MWC, 1 Big East, 1 ACC and 1 Pac 10 in BCS:
San Diego Credit Union (Pac 10 lacking)
Hawaii (Pac 10 lacking)
Motor City (Big 10, but they wouldn't put MAC v MAC)
Independence (SEC lacking AND Big 12)
Papa Johns (SEC)
Texas (Big 12 lacking)

this discussion is ridiculous. A 6-6 BG team in a bowl? Heck, something is severely wrong with the system when over half the D1-A teams go to bowls.
Oh, but I guess we can't have a playoff. there's a good 50-60 day lay off for the big 10 champ just because they don't do the conference championship game stuff. Hey, how 'bout we cut all the conference champ crap out, end the season with 12 games, and start a tourney during that 50-60 day period? "Oh, but the kids will miss too much class." Lord knows that starting a playoff from this point in the year wouldn't work
Hey, anyone else notice "FCS" playoff scores rollin' along the bottom line during this holiday weekend? Seems to work just fine for them. The BCS is a crock of ca-ca-doo. Just sayin'
Keep this quiet, the BCS police might swipe me up and I'll never be heard from again.

We're goin' to no bowl game and who really cares anyway. The bowl system now is about as credible as kids sports where even the last place team gets a trophy. It's a complete joke. We need to get rid of half the bowls we already have. In many of these minor bowls, the games are played in three quarter empty stadiums. Let's look ahead to next season and to a new coach and a new start. The very best to Coach Brandon and his family.
As i wrote, i dont think we'll make a game at all. I was merely updating a previous thread that asked the question.
BG should be 10-2...don't blow a 20 point lead in the 4th, don't lose to the worst teams in conference (EMU and Miami) and don't lose a game on a blocked punt at NIU and we're all cheering and saying how sweet GB is and how awesome BG football is.
Oh what could have been...

Actually shows you the world we now live in...
A couple of defensive stops here and there, a couple of more sales instead of second best vendor, a project brought in on time and under budget...and everyone keeps there job.
Fullmer also won a Nat Championship.

- last line from what film for you movie buffs?

There is no other way to finish a season other than yelling at the top of your lungs among BG's players holding the Peace Pipe aloft!
The Sun Belt teams are back ups for the SEC teams in the PapaJohn's and Independence bowls, so they will get 3 teams in this season. Motor City will probably get NC State. Not sure about the tie-ins with those conferences, but Ark State/La Laf would be #2 in their conference, have to assume they have a bid.
