The Sky has fallen!!

Post by cowboyjoe »

Central has lost to Eastern. Fire Butch Jones, huh? How could they have lost to such a "terrible" team. How could they have given up 56 points and 516 passing yards to that team with so much to play for? Bowl game implications, first 9 win season since 94', and they were listed among the “Others Receiving Votes” in the Associated Press top 25 poll for the fourth straight week. Eastern's 2 MAC wins this year were today and against BG. Maybe Eastern has underachieved all year when they have the talent to beat the Chips and the Falcons.

Did you see the passing stats for EMU? Schmidt completed 58 of 80 (holy hell!) and Tyler Jones caught 23 ... WOW

Of course, EMU/CMU games are always close, EMU beat CMU last year for their only MAC loss, and it's Genyk's last game as EMU's coach, so they were ready for the game.

CMU probably didn't give a crap about this game. They were already out of the MACC race, and they were already going bowling, so I doubt this one was hugely important.

Look at last year's EMU/CMU game. CMU was resting guys because they had already locked up the West. If this game was earlier in the year CMU would've won big. Period.

You're brilliant. Comparing Central Michigan's loss to EMU verus our loss against EMU makes no sense. The Chips are coming off back to back MAC titles the last two years. They are 6-2 in the MAC and 8-4 overall this year. A let down game after a big emotional loss against Ball State last week isn't surprising.

Now look at BG...4-4 in the MAC and 6-6 overall this year. Every year you get multiple losses to teams you should be beating. Not saying an upset happens now and then. Its college football...it happens.

But don't compare the consistency at CMU to what's happened the last three years at BG.

Exactly. It'll only be a matter of time before the vultures are out for him. The seeds have already been laid for the "downward trend" indictment. Brian Kelly (CMU's Urban Meyer, so to speak) took the program to its first title, Jones didn't screw anything up to win it again at a time when the league was down, and now they've completely collapsed against a rival at the end of the season.

ur right! brandon is a good coach. give him credit for all the great things he has done this season with a slew of talent and seniors.

Easterns sucks, BG sucks, you suck and brandon really sucks.

It's their fans' fault.

It's been said over and over and over and no matter how many times it's repeated, people never follow but continue to bitch.

DON'T RESPOND TO HIM.

When you do, you give him the jollies that he is after. Ignore him and he will go away. It really is that simple.

All great points here, but has anyone ventured the thought of "things to come" for the MAC. In my personal opinion, the MAC has spread more talent in quite some time. This could be a sign that the MAC is shaping up to become more competitive.

I remember when I was a student at BG, we were beating up on just about everyone, but we at least reached the MACC only to have our azzez handed to us by Miami and Big Ben. Eastern isn't that bad of a team and they've obviously showed that this season beating us and Central.

Next season is going to be one heck of a ride, especially for us BG fans since losing G. Brandon and our entire coaching staff. Expect some serious losses next year with a bunch of fresh meat to get pounded from Wy. and Mizz. Wish this were not the case but we have too many fans that have cognitive dissidence (similar to the plight with our nation).

Why would we lose our 'entire' coaching staff? Don't they want any continuity to stay with the program and give our athletes some reassurrance? I hate to see next year be a total loss because of an entire transition of staff.

They've lost like 3 of the last 4 against them.

Because you have to give the incoming coach a clean slate to hire who he sees fit for "his" coaching philosophy. I would imagine that if the current coaches fit that mold they will be given a better than fair chance at getting rehired.

I don't generally make it a point to reply to your condescending posts, but I guess since you felt the need to call me out, I'll throw you a bone.

For starters I didn't see the EMU/CMU game. As a general rule I find it tough to analyze a game without actually seeing it, or at least hearing it on the radio, but I can tell you what I think. Contrary to what you say, I think what you had was a terrible team that was playing for their season to try and knock off a top team. On the other side of the ball you had a team that had just laid EVERYTHING on the line against Ball State last week and they didn't feel they were playing for anything anymore. They were going bowling no matter what, and they weren't winning the championship no matter what. Yeah the rankings and stuff would have been great, but this was the CLASSIC setup for a let down game. They happen.

On the whole I have not watched enough of CMU the last few years to really grade the job Butch Jones has done there. I find it quite possible (even likely) that he is following in Gregg Brandon's footsteps of riding the wave from a top notch predecessor, only to see the program slowly drift back to mediocrity. Kelley built that vehicle, the next year or two will start to show whether or not Jones is still changing the oil and filling it up, or if he was just riding it until it died.

As to how this relates to OUR specific situation, I don't see the connection. Let downs happen. In betting lingo they're oftentimes termed "Trap Games". Games against lesser opponents immediately preceding or following a huge game that has major implications. It's not uncommon at all for teams to underperform and lose these games. If Brandon's teams consistently won and only fell victim to the occasional trap game I don't think so many of us would have been ready to get rid of him. Instead Brandon's teams consistently laid eggs and got demolished in the biggest games of the year in many seasons. '03 Miami (x2), '04 NIU, '04 UT, '05 UT, '07 Miami, and '08 Buffalo. Most of these games had major title implications, these weren't trap games against lesser opposition. We lost all of them, and most of them we weren't even competitive. At the same time we were laying eggs against the top competition in the MAC, we also didn't avoid the trap game losses such as '05 Western (playing poorly BEFORE Omar's injury), most of '06 season, '07 OU, '08 EMU, '08 Miami, etc.

Look, Gregg Brandon had 6 years to get it done. His program got worse as his tenure went on and he didn't win a single MAC title. I'm sorry that you were so in love with him that you fail to see that, but it's over now. The Athletic Director decided that the football issues along with the classroom and community issues justified firing the man. I happen to agree with him, you don't. So be it. What's done is done. Given your consistent defense of our coaches I get the feeling that you don't believe a coach makes a difference. It's the only reason I can think anyone would defend the Dakich/Brandon years where their programs went slowly down the tubes.
