The Rooney's know what it takes to be a good football caoch. The Ford's and Millen? Not so much. The Tomlin & Meyer hires are two perfect examples of what I'm talking about. Not necessarily the most experienced candidates, and not necessarily the best track records as assistants (although both were solid assistants, they just weren't "the most qualified"). However, both of them had the vision for what they wanted to do when they got a HC position and they've shown the ability to execute their plans. THAT is what I look for in a coaching search.Flipper wrote:Yep...and Rod Marinelli blew the Ford family and Matt Millen away when he interviewed....Jacobs4Heisman wrote:We agree once again. This post really reminded me of what the Rooney's did in looking for someone to take over for Cowher. There were guys with more experience and pedigree, but Mike Tomlin blew them away with his interviews, and stole the job from the more experienced and obvious candidates.hammb wrote:Now that we are officially looking for a new head coach, I hope Christopher can find the right guy for the job. My theory on coaching hires is that it's all about the interview, and it's up to the person doing the interviewing to recognize what it takes to be a good head coach.
Personally, I always hope for a young up & coming, fiery guy. Somebody that perhaps hasn't even had coordinator experience, but a guy that can sell himself and his ideals. A guy that knows what he wants to accomplish with the program, and has a plan to get there.
I really hope GC can find an energetic young coach, most likely a position coach from a school with a quality head coach he's been able to learn from. This is a really exciting time for BG football, as the facilites we've built can really take us to the next level along with "the right guy" leading the charge.
As I said, it's all about the interview, but we also need to hope that Christopher knows what he's looking for and when he sees it in the interview room.
