Personally, I always hope for a young up & coming, fiery guy. Somebody that perhaps hasn't even had coordinator experience, but a guy that can sell himself and his ideals. A guy that knows what he wants to accomplish with the program, and has a plan to get there.
We agree once again. This post really reminded me of what the Rooney's did in looking for someone to take over for Cowher. There were guys with more experience and pedigree, but Mike Tomlin blew them away with his interviews, and stole the job from the more experienced and obvious candidates.

I really hope GC can find an energetic young coach, most likely a position coach from a school with a quality head coach he's been able to learn from. This is a really exciting time for BG football, as the facilites we've built can really take us to the next level along with "the right guy" leading the charge.
Yep...and Rod Marinelli blew the Ford family and Matt Millen away when he interviewed.... :-)
The Rooney's know what it takes to be a good football caoch. The Ford's and Millen? Not so much. The Tomlin & Meyer hires are two perfect examples of what I'm talking about. Not necessarily the most experienced candidates, and not necessarily the best track records as assistants (although both were solid assistants, they just weren't "the most qualified"). However, both of them had the vision for what they wanted to do when they got a HC position and they've shown the ability to execute their plans. THAT is what I look for in a coaching search.

As I said, it's all about the interview, but we also need to hope that Christopher knows what he's looking for and when he sees it in the interview room.

Seriously? Exactly how many times are you going to mention that you donate money to the athletic department? Man, it's a good thing we have you around, or we might not have a football team at all.

Seriously?? Way too many skeletons there, anyone associated with the program during his time or followed him to Ill. knows the stories.

Since we are talking about former Falcons, and many listed firey young coaches. I'll throw this out there - DJ Durkin. No one would out work him, absolutely no one. If you've ever sat down and spoke with him you'd be ready to run through a wall.

Ryan A at the Blade mentioned Ron English. If you're looking for intensity and discipline, there's your guy. In the 06 OSU/Mich game after Crable essentially cost Michigan the game by a dirty hit on Troy Smith, the joke around my Michigan side of the family was wondering where Ron English hid Crable's body.

hammb already has "Brandon's successor" by his avatar, so I guess the job is his. And me and J4H are fighting over the two coordinator positions. Although I do have two years of defensive coordinating for a CYO team, so I probably have the edge there. :D

What about Sylvester Croom? Not sure if it is possible but that would be a high profile hire that would draw attention to the program and not to mention he has had some success in the past.

Is there an NCAA Football 09 coordinator? I'd be a shoe-in for that one.

I hope its no one we ever heard of. I don't want a retread. Give me a hungry up and coming assistant.

+1....BUT....

I love my Falcons, and I know he was an assistant at BG a few years back even, but please don't make any moves on Beckman yet. I'm enjoying the Oklahoma State defense as of late......and I'm hopeful he (Beckman) continues his relatively decent strategy through the Oklahoma State/O-who? game this weekend. Wait until AFTER the bowl season, of which I'm hoping OK State is a part, and THEN come and get him. Hey, if he can turn OK State's defense around....I'd like to see what he can do for BG's program in the top job.
I don't think OSU or OU have a defense OR special teams...LOL...44-41 in the 4th quarter...wow...

Ok, so there have been some interesting names thrown around, but I have one question and then my own suggestion...

The question: Did the whole staff get let go, as well?

The suggestion: Jason Candle, Offensive Coordinator, Mount Union College

Look for Luke Fickell to at least interview. He does have a BG connection... none other than Antonio Daniels. Both went to DeSales in Columbus. May have been classmates, or one or two classes apart.

In C-bus, it was reported a couple of weeks ago that Fickell is the type that UT might go after. Now that BG has an opening, look for BG to at least interview him. Wouldn't be a bad pick.

Where? When? Four 8-loss seasons in five years as a head coach. Yuck.

Maybe I grew up too close to Akron during the Gerry Faust era, but the idea of hiring a coach who failed at a big-time program (if you can call Mississippi State a big-time program) really doesn't appeal to me at all.

I don't know that anyone's mentioned Glen Mason, but I'd love to see him at least get an interview if he's interested. I know...some smart guy is going to say that Mason failed at Minnesota, but before he got there, the Gophers had played in a total of five bowl games. Under Mason, they played in seven bowl games in ten years. Anyone who can do that, and win at Kansas, and win at Kent State, is someone who should be on Greg Christopher's radar. Especially if he's coached in the MAC, has had success recruiting Ohio, and is unemployed.

Although it would make my brain explode to watch BG run the ball 45 or 50 times a game.
I'm not as cool as Tony Gaver, nor will I ever be.

Let's not forget that Ohio U. was able to get Frank Solich (former Nebraska HC) to come to Athens...so to say that a former BCS Conference HC would come to BG is not that crazy...here's some more names to ponder:

Steve Spurrier, HC South Carolina
Larry Kehres, HC Mount Union College
Vince Kehres, DC Mount Union College
Jerry Moore, HC Appalachian State
Tyrone Willingham, former HC at Notre Dame and Washington
June Jones, HC SMU, formerly of Hawaii
