Thank you Transfer. People who think we need 8000+ seats are delusional. I'd much rather have a great 5000 seat arena than an empty 8000 seat one. For instance Oakland & EMU both have great newer facilities. Oakland's is much smaller (probably closer to 3000 seats), but it is a far better venue, IMO, because it's usually got a "fuller" feel and a much better atmosphere.transfer2BGSU wrote:The Athletic Department was thinking what was best for BGSU.HoopsFan wrote: I'm not (not) whining, but we went from 8K to 7K down to 5K in a hurry.
The "venerable" AA could have been added on to for less than $36M if the Student Services building property had not ben committed.
They looked at our attendance history over the 40 years AA was in use and decided to build a facility that was best for BGSU.
No need to build an 8,000 seat arena that is going to have 6,000 empty seats in it for 25 home basketball games each season and 12 or 13 home volleyball matches. This is not Eastern Michigan.
No need to build an 8,000 seat arena that is going to hold one or two concerts a year because the big boys won't tour in Bowling Green, Ohio since they are already touring in Cleveland, Detroit, Cincinnati, and Chicago in venues with 15,000+ seating capacities.
Build a 5,000 seat facility (and it may actually come in a little less than 5,000 when finally built) that eventually is going to sell out for all home basketball games (both men's and women's) and volleyball matches and everyone in Northwest Ohio is fighting for a THE HOT TICKET in collegiate sports.
BIGGER is not always better.
You would have been shocked to know how much it would have cost just to bring AA up to code without a practice court and additional locker rooms for OHSAA tourneys and coaches offices and meeting rooms and everything the Stroh Center is going to have.

Re: What he said
The thing Greg Christopher has stressed when I've talked to him is that they wanted to give BGSU teams playing in the new arena the biggest home-court advantage possible too... That is not confined to the game-day experience. That includes all the things you reference above... sound system, training/practice facilities, coaches offices, video board, as well as creature comforts for the fans (the more they enjoy the experience, the more likely they are to come!).transfer2BGSU wrote:The Athletic Department was thinking what was best for BGSU.HoopsFan wrote: I'm not (not) whining, but we went from 8K to 7K down to 5K in a hurry.

I can't wait for this thing to become a reality!!

1. Air conditioning. Amen. I recall games where the place was packed, and the temperatures were really hot, and that was on the floor level. Actually, it was part of the coolness of the place, but during the summer, and for other events, it was and remains an issue.
2. Will Boys State continue to use Memorial Hall, or might they avail themselves of the comfy confines of Da Stroh.

Building looks like structure that houses the "Disaster Transport" ride at Cedar Point...Falcon137 wrote:I'm not a fan either. Anyone else think it looks kinda retro? Maybe we could put a corn silo out front to spruce it up a bit!RangerRocket wrote:Building looks like structure that houses the "Disaster Transport" ride at Cedar Point...Falcon137 wrote:I'm not a fan either. Not to worry, the U.S. Army has already agreed to donate a nice Rocket for the front of the building...Redwingtom wrote:Maybe we could put a corn silo out front to spruce it up a bit!RangerRocket wrote:Building looks like structure that houses the "Disaster Transport" ride at Cedar Point...Falcon137 wrote:I'm not a fan either. But what in gods name were they thinking?Redwingtom wrote:Maybe we could put a corn silo out front to spruce it up a bit!RangerRocket wrote:Building looks like structure that houses the "Disaster Transport" ride at Cedar Point...Falcon137 wrote:I'm not a fan either. And what is with the blunt tip? Are they afraid Paul Bunyan might trip and put an eye out on it? Is it a Jewish rocket?
Actually, I love it, really I do. It is just like UT, in the end, it goes flat.

Actually, the new steam plant for the campus was incorporated into the building (the old one will be torn down). This is really the steam plant smoke stack disguised as a Rocket.
As I indicated, the Army has agreed to donate another rocket/missile for the front of the building. We asked for a Nike/Hercules. Of course, it too will be pointed toward the BG campus...

I see. Good to know, but you realize we have to make fun of it anyway.RangerRocket wrote:Actually, the new steam plant for the campus was incorporated into the building (the old one will be torn down). This is really the steam plant smoke stack disguised as a Rocket.
