Someone described coach Speck at Purdue as a less then inspiring choice or something like that. That was exactly how I felt about every single coach that was mentioned. Fickel was inexperienced and only experienced at OSU, Mullens had flaws, etc. etc. We are trying to nab another Urban Meyer. Someone who can instill momentum in the program going forward, not a place setter. This guy with his offense and winning percentage at the smaller schools when he got things rolling really has me excited. And I dont think it will take that long. At those other two places he probably had to recruit the types of guys he needed. He walks into a QB who has started for 4 years and a bunch of great athletes at the skill spots.I think that our offense could win us 3-4 games next year if Sheehan was drawing up plays in the dirt.

Another thing that has me excited about him is that his offense really seems like a niche offense. When you get a guy like A train he will find a way to get him on the field. We will be recruiting stud athletes and finding homes for them.

Id love to see a Tennessee transfer or two also.

Remember he was taking over programs that were absolutely dismal before he got there. Here he will be taking over a mediocre program that largely played below it's talent level. The turnaround might be a bit quicker.

Still, from all accounts his offense is rather complex, so it might take awhile for the players to start feeling comfortable in the system. We're also losing a LOT of talented players (especially on defense), so I'm really not sure where the expectation level should be for next year in terms of wins and losses.

I'm just hopeful to finally watch a well coached football team again. We haven't had one of those at BG in awhile.

I think in a year where there were so many coaches moving around, and so few obvious bright stars rising, it is easy to be underwhelmed. Urban didn't exactly light fires under my arse when I first heard the name. Then I saw the guy, and it was an easy sell.

Ohio State fans ripped on picking JT as their HC because his experience was at the 1AA level, yet it obviously worked out for them. Not all lower division coaches are equal, and this guy is much younger overall. Yet he seems able to diagnosis a team, guide in the direction it needs to go in, as to be able to win.

His time at UTenn is easy to knock, but I wouldn't knock coach Ward for things on Defense at BG for the same reason I wouldn't Clawson. Simply put, a good coach can be stuck with a promotion that puts him into the position of leading a lost cause. He was seeking to advance his career, and UTenn gave him that chance. Urban was a non-coordinator at an underachieving Notre Dame when he was hired. Nobody held the fact he was an assistant at a struggling brand name school against him.

That said, he isn't Urban, and it will be unfair to expect him to be. Clawson may be a good fit that lasts more than a couple of years. He comes into a program in decline but with the horses to win now. They'll certainly be a bump as the recruiting tries to catch-up under a situation of reduced scholarships. He has a clean-up job to do on and off the field. All of this will take time.

Plus a lot of folks will need to get to know the young buck. To early to go into depth, and like many, I'll want to see how the man presents himself, how well he navigates the BG community culture, how the team responds to him, etc.

For now, he has a clean slate and goodwill to burn. Welcome to him and godspeed.

In all seriousness though, it's an article. It's written with facts, no opinions. I think he did a good job with it.

i can say that a guy that i hope stays for as long as possible is the strength and conditioning coach Aaron Hillmann. He is a great man and coach who really does get the best out kids... he is the one coach that i have nothing but respect for. most coaches we had were great, but he was one that never waivered or changed, you had to be on your sh it at all times when working with him.

i feel he is a great asset to bgsu... not only the football team but all of the other sports as well.

Just looking a bit more at the list and my assumptions. I would guess he brings in someone who knows the offense well.

Stan Drayton is the current RBs coach at Tennesee....at least he is still listed and was brought in with Clawson because of his past experience with him at Villanova. Clawson gives me the feeling he will be calling plays so an artificial OC/RBs coach title might be in order here. Charles Bankins coaches RBs and STs for Richmond, last year coaching Tim Hightower now of the Arizona Cardinals

Byron Thweatt is intriguing, he was a star player at Va and now coaches DTs at Richmond. I always loved the Tommy Thigpen hire when we had him, just out of college and the pros guys seem to be great additions.

Defensively it looks like Tennessee is replacing their entire staff, which has been there for like 13 years.
