Ron English to be named Monday @ EMU

Per UM's scout.com site. If their mods are reporting it take it to the bank due to Lloyd's heavy influence in the search

I read where Louisville officials were aware when they signed him to a two-year contract, that he was interested in becoming a head coach.

My question is whether he is jumping at the first thing being offered?

I'm sure he has had several looks. With Carr's hand in the process and English knowing the area for recruiting, maybe he's looking at it as his chance to make a mark. Eight years ago, I'm sure someone would have made a similar comment about Mrs. Meyer's husband coming to BG, and look where he is.

Point is, it's actually a pretty safe move if you want to break into a head coaching job. Expectations are so unbelievably low with that program, that anyone who can deliver a .500 season will be God. Win a title and you can probably name your next move up.

Worst case scenario for English, he can't get EMU out of the mess they've dug themselves over the last 20 years or so and he lands back as a DC at BCS school.

Living in Louisville I see both sides of this situation. Obviously English is a dynamic coordinator and a tremendous recruiter and deserves a shot at running his own show. However while the EMU job isn't ideal he had had had to get out of Louisville. Steve Kragthorpe has shown a complete inability to motivate a fanbase or anything with the program. In his two years there Kragthorpe has gone 6-6 and 7-5 off of a team that went to the Orange Bowl. English had to get out before Kragthorpe's record catches up with him

Actually I was shocked that they didn't hire someone similar to Meyer - a position coach with no prior coordinator experience. I was thinking the job was that much the bottom of the barrel that no self-respecting coordinator would take the job.

Well, with UM down right now, it's EMU's chance to get SOMETHING going in Ypsilanti. Very difficult situation to be in...UM and MSU...and the other two MI MAC schools. But hey, who knows?

I dunno how much Eastern pays, but he's pretty much taken two demotions in three years. From UM to Louisville and now from Louisville to EMU.

You're kidding, right? The guy gets the chance to leave the Can't Count Confernce and come to the MAC as a HEAD coach? Hardly a demotion. Any chance to play, coach, sell tickets in the MAC is a PROMOTION in prestige if not pay. At least it would be in a perfect world.

AP officially reported the hiring this afternoon.

Five black head coaches in Division 1-A, two of them are in the MAC (for now). We're so progressive.

Sorry, but being a defensive coordinator at U of M is probably a better gig than the head coach at any MAC school, let alone the worst program in Division I. So's the DC gig at Louisville.

I don't really see how UM being down would have any affect on EMU. It's not like EMU's going to be taking recruits Michigan wants anytime soon or ever. Maybe if they got really good and Michigan stayed really bad for a decade EMU could draw some fans that would normally go to the Michigan game that Saturday. But as soon as Michigan started getting good again those fans would be right back to the Michigan games.

UB and Akron are both programs that have had long gestation periods leading to MAC titles. EMU might being another chance to do something akin to what Gill has done at Buffalo.

And as for UM, they are down. I mean, they lost to Toledo at the BiG House. Most up there would say that happening means you can walk across hell without burning your feet right now. It is the perception that UM being down that could help.

Of course, I remember when they were saying Charlie Batch would lift EMU out of the bottom of the MAC.

Was English leaving Michigan a demotion? Or was it Rodriguez cleaning house and restocking with his own guys?

And once he was in Louisville, I don't think it's a demotion to get a HC job in 1-A as a coordinator. If that's what he wants to do, he has to start somewhere, even if it's the bottom of 1-A.

Louisville to EMU is a step down, and I didn't literally mean he was demoted from UM to UL, he had to leave cuz he wasn't a Rich Rod guy. But honestly, the guy was a main candidate for the Sparty job two years ago and now he's coaching at EMU.
