And interestingly enough, the Convo center isn't really close to campus, and they still get that many people. But I've always pictured OU basketball to be the thing down there. Their other "big programs" aren't usually that good (a few exceptions year to year) but OU basketball has a tradition in the recent past of being at or near the top of the Mac, so that could play a role.
The bottom line is win and you'll get fans. Lose when the fans show up (like against AK and football Minne) you'll be battling uphill the rest of the year.

I made a couple of road trips to OU for games years ago and I always got the impression that a lot of people from the community and the surrounding area went to OU games. As several people have mentioned, they have a strong basketball tradition that seems to resist periods when the program is a little down.

I'm not sure where you heard that the Convo isn't close to campus... it's on campus.
Our dorms here at OU are on three separate "greens," East, West, and South, each with about one third of the campus population housed there. The Convo is just steps from West Green, and while it is all the way across campus from East, it's still just 5-10 minutes on foot. South is somewhat closer than East, but further out than West green from the Convo.
Dad's Weekend is always a big draw here, and on average on Dad's Weekend we'll put more than 9k in the arena. Last year against Central Michigan, we drew more than 10,000.
Also, somebody had asked about the population of Athens. The currently reported census estimates are just under 21,000. With roughly 20,000 students at the Athens campus, and about 8,000 of those live on campus (not counted in population figures).
So, there are about 13,000 non-students living in the city of Athens. We also draw from around the county from smaller towns, and have some regulars who come from Columbus and Marietta areas for weekend home games.

Oh yeah wow I'm SO jealous of the team we BEAT because they had a nice crowd. Good for them. I guess the 10.998 DIDN'T help.
Sometimes I think some of our fans would be happiest if we led the MAC in attendance but went 0-16 in conference play.

Ive been there, I guess I didn't realize how big the campus was because it was a hike and a half away from where i was staying (must have been on the east green). OU has been drawing Big Ten type crowds for years and years. They have the MAC attendance record of something like 15K and it was a BG victory. I think it was 1970, but Im not sure.They would have made a huge STUPID mistake to have built a 5000 seat arena in their town of 10,000.
