What current sport brings Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Michigan State on campus to play? What other sport competes in a league with those teams? Football will never get any of those schools to come on campus and will never get a chance to compete for a national championship, ever! Basketball may have a slightly better shot at a national championship, but it still doesn't compete with the schools the hockey team does nor can bring them on campus. Further, the hockey team outdraws the basketball team pretty regularly still.
Bechstein has it right, the former players are waiting for the University to actually make an investment into the program before they will. How can Miami afford to field all three sports while having fewer students and BG can't? It's called priorities. It's time for this university to once again give the hockey program the priority it deserves!
I'm sorta with Warthog with this one , although I have gone to several hockey games in my day. Yeah, it is great that we do go up against top notch competition week in and week out with the likes of OSU, Mich, MSU, ND but we haven't been at that level for eons. We probably have passed the threshold for being able to compete in highly in Div.1 college hockey here with our funds being split with more nationally popular sports in basketball and football. I do wish we could keep the hockey program alive but where are we gonna get the funds to keep it at the high level , ie higher pay for better coaches and assistants and better facilities to bring in the recruits we need to compete? The OSU's , ND's, MSU's and Michigans are huge universities with tons of rich alums making donations every year. How else can some of those schools pay close to a million dollars a year for their coaches? We just can't compete financially with them in this sport.
Warthog said it, what big alum has donated a large sum of money to hockey lately. How about all of our former players in the NHL? Where are they? We haven't heard squat from any of em that I gather. You say we need a commitment from the university first , well why wait for them? How about all the alums with money that care so much about the program donate so the university has the money to buy out Paluch and start anew? BGSU is apparently going threw so hard times financially (as other schools are) and maybe are looking to cut the apparently least favored sport by the masses. I know you hockey fans here are die-hards like no other and you passion unmatched but there doesn't appear to be enough of you to make the difference that the university can see as a whole , and thats rather unfortunate. Personally , I'd love for BG to become a great basketball power like a Gonzaga. College basketball also gives us a legitimate chance competing for a NC via the Tourney. I'd almost prefer giving more resources to men's and women's basketball because of it. Cutting hockey at BG would be demoralizing to some of us yes, but other side is , we could sure bring up the level of our other main sports big time with the extra money which cost less anyway. Having said that though, I still hope hockey here can be saved if it is up for the chopping block like some believe , I just hope we can find the funds to do it right.
