The MAC is more than football though....
I like the MAC tourney being at the Gund/Q/whatever... beyond that though, MAC hoops has gone down.... Down.... DOWN since the Antonio Gates/KSU days....
I do think Chryst has done a lot of good as far as getting MAC football into the public eye. However, we have become the whores of ESPN and would play a game at 2:00AM on a Tuesday to get on ESPN News, I think. Of course we probably have to take the good with the bad in that regard.
I do agree though that the quality of MAC basketball has gone WAY down in the last 5 years or so, and that's a real shame. I don't know if you can blame the commissioner or not, but it really seems as though the MAC has taken resources away from basketball in order to attempt to get better exposure in football. The real kick in the nuts is that the conference has gotten far worse at football in the last 5 years as well.
Right. And the logic behind doing so is stupid. Small conference football teams pretty much have a ceiling because you need A LOT of really good players to become a really good team. Conversely, small conference basketball teams, when run by smart people, can do some pretty impressive things. We see it several times every year. When a mid-major school recruits two or three really good players all of a sudden that team is winning games in the NCAA tournament. Two or three really good players in college football won't get you far.
So, yes, if raising awareness about your mid-major conference is the goal, do it through men's hoops.

Although I'm a bigger football fan than basketball, I'm inclined to agree. The only way you get exposure in football is through top 25 rankings and beating BCS schools. I think building a hoops conference that wins games in March is a much easier goal to accomplish than getting the football teams to start seeing top 25 rankings on a consistent basis.

Your scaring me Hamm, cuz I'm been thinking the same thing over the past year or so.
I don't think you can judge a commissioner by wins and losses and national rankings. That's dependant on the individual schools with recruiting and coaching.
You judge a commissioner on things like media expsoure, TV contracts, sponsorship dollars, championship tournaments, bowl affiliations, scheduling, school membership and to some extent facilities.
I think Rick raised the bar on all of those things.

I would also hope that schools that do not fit the academic or competitive mission of the conference might be shown the door (EMU...). But maybe that is just wishful thinking.
Better watch what you wish for.
How many conference championships has BG won in the last five years and then compare that to the conference championships EMU has won.
Based upon your comment, BG would be shown the door.
Meh, I'm referring more to EMU's academic profile than their ability to compete, but whatever. Buffalo sucks at most things athletic (until this year, obviously), but they increase the academic profile of the conference, and I value that. It is for this same reason that I am glad the MAC didn't allow WKU into the conference, even thought they would have contributed a great deal to the overall athletic competitiveness of the conference, especially in men's basketball.
But by my logic, Miami's participation in the conference is a bit more iffy, so it's probably stupid position to take. And, as soon as I read 24's insane response, I regretted making this statement altogether. So...yeah.

I'm inclined to agree with you. You cannot hold a commissioner accountable for how competitive the teams in the conference are. I'm just saying that it doesn't appear as though the effort to promote men's hoops nationally was on par with the effort put forth to promote football. Obviously the additional TV coverage hasn't really made our football teams play better, so who knows. I would just like to see the MAC get more basketball games on the ESPN networks.

Is there some Nerd Bowl Im missing?
Umm...have you ever noticed that most conferences at all levels of NCAA competition have a certain academic standard associated with their membership requirements?
I will never fight the assertion that I am a nerd, though. I freely, and openly admit that I am just that.

At least as far as football goes, I'm going to have to disagree about CMU. They've been very competitive in the MAC and OOC, at least in recent times. I don't know a ton about their history, but I certainly don't see it as a mistake.

Hoops hx is pretty strong. Probably more NBA players than just about anybody and lots of good teams. Majrle, Roundfield, POoquette and Kaman come to mind- pretty sure there have been others.
