Seriously pal, that's a little extreme. I used to get tanked in college and I'd hardly consider myself some kind of alcoholic. College kids get hammered, oh well. While it's not the healthiest thing to do, the only real mistake was driving.

Haven't gotten the chance to read the other threads about the WMU game yet, but it seems McCoy's absence was some kind of factor, we got pushed to the limit by a team we should've blown out, no?

Come on now, that's a little extreme. .17 is high, but an isolated incident (and we have no proof to say this is a common occurrence) doesn't show to be anything that is rehab worthy. It could have been a friends birthday, could have been excited after the W, could have been relaxing with some friends, but with that figure being the only known facts, it certainly doesn't show that she needs to enter any sort of rehab facility.

Sure that night she drank heavily, but there isn't any proof that its a common thing. I bet 80% of the campus has been drunk enough to blow a .17, it's called being a dumb college kid, don't go casting stones without knowing any facts about her, or her usual doings. As far as we know this is an isolated incident, her first time drinking, so let's not start tossing anyone who makes a stupid mistake into a rehab center because they got too drunk one night.

Speeding tickets? Not paying parking tickets? There could be numerous reasons, and as far as we know it had nothing to do with anything alcohol related (or else it would have been posted on here before or somewhere else in the news)

I'm glad McCoy's poor judgement did not cause harm to anyone else. Let's hope she learns life lesson more valuable than anything she could learn on the basketball court. Now, how does it affect the team? Obviousy, they missed her yesterday against WMU. Uhl and Slagle don't really have the same skill set as McCoy. McCoy's ability to dribble drive and finish around the basket even against taller defenders is hard to replace. Against the better teams in the MAC, the Falcons will need her back on the floor. Coach Miller will make a decision that is best for the program and McCoy in the long run. I have complete trust in Miller's judgement to handle this the right way.

Need a TRUE "Big"

Post by Class of 61 »

I love to watch these ladies play...their hustle and poise under pressure has to impress people, even those who don't know the game. But one thing is missing from this team...and I know it's hard to get... Trying to rebound with 5'11" and even 6'1" players vs some teams who have legit 6'3, 6'4 centers just puts you at an automatic disadvantage. I know that rebounding is a skill, hustle based to a point...but 3-4" is still 3-4" when it comes to reach etc.

I noticed also that the girls signed for next year are also in the 5"11", 6"0" range...just wish we could go hard after a true legit 6"4" or bigger young lady who could command a presence in the key.
Education our Challenge, Excellence our goal. (look it up)

I'm with trooperden on this one..the best man at my wedding was/is a substance abuse counselor. If you're blowing something approaching a .20 (and .17+ is close enough) and you can function like anything approaching a normal human being, you might very well have a drinking problem...

(Just to be clear...my earlier comments re this situation were made before I was aware she'd blown a .17+...that alters my stance on the matter...considerably)

Public drinking revisited

Post by HoopsFan »

It's a long learning process, as I can remember stumbling my way across campus after an evening of drinking without driving. I can remember the hairy buffalo parties and grain alcohol drinks...well part of it anyway.

Over time you learn that you don't have to get drunk or even drink to have a good time. Since I'm a guy and weigh easily 2x as much as Niki, I can sit in a bar and drink a 20+ oz. beer an hour and safely get behind the wheel of a car and drive home. I don't do shots...on purpose. Now the point becomes, if I'm limited to one beer an hour, why even drink at all?
Certain brands of N/A beers taste the same as alcoholic beers, but few people drink beer for the taste :-)

One of my best radio days drinking buds probably drank every day of his adult life. It eventually killed him. Niki was lucky. She didn't crash the car and kill her two passengers or herself, but she made a very poor choice to get behind the wheel of a car, drunk or sober, without a driver's license. It will alter her career in that she must work in an area that has public transportation, or arrange for transportation and have different insurance and plates when she gets a license in 2014 or so. Having no driver's license for 5 years ought to be incentive enough to not drink and drive, not being able to work, or be restricted in what you can do for a living ought to be second.

I think the University has a course on drinking and driving that you can take. If only the course was required of all incoming students and the consequences were taught with real examples like Niki, we wouldn't be having this thread.

Yikes. I drank a good deal in college, but I rarely drink anymore just because the opportunity isn't there. For the Superbowl, I had 8-10 drinks during the three hours of pregame, and then only about 2 drinks during the game. I weigh 180, so therefore would have easily blown a .17. Easily. Probably closer to .20. By the time midnight rolled around and I had only had 2 drinks in the previous 5 hours, I wasn't really all that "drunk". I made my wife drive because I knew I was legally drunk and she wasn't, but I was not slurring my speech, stumbling, or anything approaching visibly drunk. If you had walked up to me, you would have had no idea I would blow a ghastly .17.

I'm not excusing her actions. Getting behind the wheel was dumb. But blowing a .17 does not come anywhere near constituting a drinking problem on it's own. Some of you are making a lot of really stupid assumptions about a person you've never met. Get a grip.

Not sure if rehab is the first step in this situation. Most likely (assuming she has an attorney worth a grain of salt) she will attend some AA meetings before her court date. And if she pays attention and takes the meetings seriously she should be able to determine whether she has a problem or not.

A forced rehab for someone who has not admitted that they were powerless over alcohol might not do any good.

Why does doing this mean she has a problem? Explain...

My wife works in the local police department's traffic bureau. From what I hear DUI is an epidemic. There are so many 2 and 3 time offenders. My response is that how many other times did they drive in the same condition and not get caught? 5X as much 10X as much 25X as much. I think it would be extremely rare that a person blowing twice the legal limit was caught the first and only time they drove in that condition. Is the person an alcoholic - that's not for this board to decide. However, the person or the court will have to decide that issue on a number of factors. In Michigan, DUI 1st timers (depending on the jurisdiction) will get a long probation, AA meetings, likely counseling on substance abuse for that high of a blood level, $500 a year penalty to the state for two years as well as the regular court costs. Still, the number of repeat offenders is rising.

It doesn't. Only Niki can determine whether she has a problem or not. AA (or other counseling) can help her reach that conclusion.

That is true. Unfortunately, that really doesn't answer the question of when she'll be back. It would seem a bit excessive to me to hold her out the remainder of the season as that would be 10-12 games at least. But it appears that is what Miller is set on doing. Whatever he decides ultimately I'm fine with though, even if its a season-ending suspension.
