The "venerable" AA could have been added on to for less than $36M if the Student Services building property had not ben committed.
The Athletic Department was thinking what was best for BGSU.

They looked at our attendance history over the 40 years AA was in use and decided to build a facility that was best for BGSU.

No need to build an 8,000 seat arena that is going to have 6,000 empty seats in it for 25 home basketball games each season and 12 or 13 home volleyball matches. This is not Eastern Michigan.

No need to build an 8,000 seat arena that is going to hold one or two concerts a year because the big boys won't tour in Bowling Green, Ohio since they are already touring in Cleveland, Detroit, Cincinnati, and Chicago in venues with 15,000+ seating capacities.

Build a 5,000 seat facility (and it may actually come in a little less than 5,000 when finally built) that eventually is going to sell out for all home basketball games (both men's and women's) and volleyball matches and everyone in Northwest Ohio is fighting for a THE HOT TICKET in collegiate sports.

BIGGER is not always better.

You would have been shocked to know how much it would have cost just to bring AA up to code without a practice court and additional locker rooms for OHSAA tourneys and coaches offices and meeting rooms and everything the Stroh Center is going to have.
Thank you Transfer. People who think we need 8000+ seats are delusional. I'd much rather have a great 5000 seat arena than an empty 8000 seat one. For instance Oakland & EMU both have great newer facilities. Oakland's is much smaller (probably closer to 3000 seats), but it is a far better venue, IMO, because it's usually got a "fuller" feel and a much better atmosphere.

ALRIGHT! The next chump who comes out here and tries to re-stoke this argument gets his ass kicked. Got that hammbonehead? :)

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

No argument here. This rendering, in particular:

I've never seen a building like it. I'm no expert on basketball buildings, but it seems like we may be innovating here. I like that.

I'm sorry, I just don't see where people think this view is "plain." Plain would be a solid wall.

I don't see that. I see brilliant lines with texture. I didn't like the south entrance at first, but looking at the body of work, I really love this building. If this is the type of new construction (see Wolf center) anticipated, I'm very much looking forward to future projects.

I hope they keep the green space next to the building towards Wooster.

I see an airport terminal. But that's cool because I happen to like airport terminals.

Actually, that wall of windows looks a lot like Indy's new airport terminal. Facing the highway, that thing is gonna glow like nobody's business. A whole new generation of Falcons will have that to greet them on their way off or past the I-75 exit, just like those of us today have the "BGSU" lit up on the football stadium to welcome us "home".

Ya know, I wonder how much power the lights being on in the SEBO and this thing will tally up the electric bill? I've always wondered that about the lit up SEBO, this just seems like it will be the same way. Maybe the lights are green and energy saving as well, but I really don't think so.

I doubt the lights at the Sebo Center are incredibly green, but it seems like this would be a chance to do something green like that with the Stroh Center and make a statement. Hell, possibly even get some more government money to go green.

As long as the court is lit properly, I couldn't care less if the rest of the building ran on solar power. I can't even begin explaining how hard it is to shoot a good quality photo in Anderson with the lighting in there!

Definitely. That part obviously needs to be the best it can, but I was thinking more of the "always on" beacon-type lights in the front of the place.

didn't read the whole thread and if this was already mentioned, sorry... but did anyone else look at the banners above the hoop in the action shot image of what the court will look like? I noticed that the picture they used was of a player... one Ryne Hamblet... that was removed from the program for academic reasons... kinda made me chuckle that he was the one used.

My first reaction was one of "ah, they're going for retro airport cool." The body of work mitigates that.

Still looks like a giant waffle house to me. What will the do when retro is no longer cool. I do not like the exterior. Inside looks good.
