Speaking of the Stroh Center, USG is scheduled to vote on the $50 fee that is to be added to all students' fees and tuition on Monday. All indications are that USG will pass this, but there is considerable opposition to the proposal within the student body, mostly from the sophomore and junior classes. They are not happy about having to pay for a facility that they won't ever get to use.

A long time ago there was talk about a "Falcon Plaza" that was supposed to go in between the Doyt and Stroh Center. Do we have any updates on this? Is it even real, or is this another one of my crazy dreams that I often have after a bad night of Wild Turkey? :-)

I believe that there will be a Falcon Palza because I thought they said thats where the giant falcon statue was going to go, not sure about it being between the stadium and arena though

I thought I heard the same thing as BourbonFalcon, but now that I think of it, it was probably a rumor or something like that as many people thought(including myself) that the Stroh Center was going to be placed in the grassy area due south of the stadium.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the $50 fee didn't start until the Stroh was completed.....which means that the sophomores and juniors wouldn't have to pay for it at all........

Well, such is life when you're going with the BG News as your primary news source. The paper said the fee would start effective in Fall 09 and last 15 years-ish.

It would make sense considering the University will float bonds to pay for this, and you would want to start paying that debt sooner rather than later.

A couple of comments from the grumpy architect... not that my comments will be grumpy..... just that its Sunday and I working some today.

1. Rossetti Associates are good architects. I am glad to see they selected someone nearby. They have been around for a bit and have built a nice portfolio of work. They have grown from their initial Detroit office. No matter what our final comments will be.... these guys should do a nice job. But I still have some cutting comments.

2. Why all the Michigan stuff.... If memory serves me correctly, Rossetti renovated Yost. I am imagine they have a number of Michigan alumni working in their office.

3. To someone's comment about "someone having fun putting all the images in the renderings".... pretty much true. These things are labor intensive and typically the most junior staff works on these things. Plus the younger staff is typically most versed in Photoshop - which is what this probably was finalized in. Sometimes its the only fun these kids can have.....

4. We need to see a plan (and a site plan).... pretty pictures are nothing but eye wash or eye-candy..... for some people like Ziggy.... this is basketball porn  So remember these things are just to get people excited.

5. 5,000 seat arena is perfect..... Tne NUTTER BUTTER Center at Wright State is 9,500 and its a cavern. Its stupid to oversize. Even the minor league hockey team wants out.

Now the Smart AZZ comments

a. Why the hell does every new building have to look like its wants to soar or fly or whatever .... Sebo is the same.... once is cool.... multiple facilities is just stupid. We get it.... WE'RE CALLED THE FALCONS.... now how about getting some real inspiration. BTW - I HATE the WOLFE..... How original is it to take a shoe box and shove it in the ground at an obscure angle? That thing creates NO connection to the campus and its context. What could be its most interesting facade faces a feaking parking lot

b. $36 million dollars and we get a bunch of metal siding...... well at least it isn't Dryvit (that fake stucco on styrofoam crap that should be outlawed). But really..... why can't we work some real materials in this building..... like brick? I don't like how this metal siding.... the vertically applied on the "house" oil-cans. Looks a crap in a few years.

c. I am not sure I would orient the Stroh (nice beer name BTW) N-S, but rather E-W as to take more advantage of daylighting and so on. Particularly in the office areas. Its great that some daylight is brought into the "House", but it might be hard to control.

d. Speaking of which.... its time for BGSU to embrace LEED (Sustainable Design). This building should be designed to at least achieve a Silver rating. If you are familiar with LEED - it really addresses mechanical and electrical systems - but this building due to its site could really take advantage of solar gain, plus some wind generation.

e. Overall this is a flat and uninspired design. Notice we aren't shown the east or north sides of this building..... Hmmm..... whats happening over there.... that's the first side you are going to see coming in off of Wooster.... right..... and we aren't shown what its going to look like. So we have effectively..... turned our back or at least our side to our "front door".

Just a few thoughts

The pic at the top of this page (6) IS the view from Wooster. The big windowed side will be visible from I-75.

I believe he is asking what the building would look like from Alumni Dr (North) and MercerAve (East).

The East side of the building is the side facing 75 and we're looking at it from Wooster. Those are the two that the "public" will get looks at as they pass on the interstate or get off 75 for gas/dinner/coming home to or through BG. Those are the two most important, IMO.

Are you sure? I'm looking at the shadows in the illustrations. We need to see a site plan....

Either way.... this building needs to be four sided in its design due to it being an object sitting out in the open. It is not like Anderson, which has two sides that aren't public faces per se (at least any more...)

The name of the file is "StrohFromWooster.jpg" or something similar.
