A Stadium Idea

Post by BGDrew »

Now, I understand that this wouldn't be the most viable or attractive option, but with the Toledo Sports Arena opening this year I have to wonder what the viability of using the arena for at least a portion of our "home" hockey games. I understand that one of the draws that the Barn has is the number of locals who make it to the game, but with with our Arena almost at a point of disrepair (I've seen the "backstage" of the arena, it's bad people) I have to wonder how feasible it would be to at least play a few games/year up in Toledo?

I've actually thought about this being a good idea, especially if we could get games against bigger teams like UM or OSU up there, it could be a good draw. HOWEVER, that would also take away from the money that would be brought in to the athletic department...so it will never happen.

Attendance will also suffer. I know a lot of students that go to the game because it's convenient and fun. If they had to drive all the way to Toledo to go, student attendance would plummet. Hell, I'm a huge fan, but I wouldn't be able to go because I don't have a car

Last I heard, it was discussed, but I'm not sure if it ever went past the discussion stage...so, never say never...it's one thing you'll learn being around this program Drum...never say never.

I've thought about this: I think as people said, it would lower student attendence, so probably not good if its done too much. It'd be nice a game or two especially against a big team like Boston College, Minnesota, etc. by having a game or two next season in Toledo may drawl more casual fans from the Toledo area to other Bg hockey games at BG.

Yeah, I guess when you think about it, only having one game up there a year or so probably wouldn't affect student attendance THAT much, and with the added amount of people from the toledo area to come to the game, plus the more advertisement that would go into it, we could probably get a really high attendance number if it were against a big team. i think that it would have to be either UM or OSU though, just because those are two schools that people care about in the area. if BC came most people would care less.

Problem with having a game against either one of those 2 schools there is it would be a virtual home game for THEM.

Once a year in Toledo over a break (Thanksgiving or Christmas) when few students are coming anyways and not against anyone who would draw well enough to make it a home game for them such as UMich, Mich St, or Ohio St. It would need to be a national power to advertise such as Boston College or North Dakota State to get local fans to come.

Yeah it can't be against Michigan or OSU, Toledo is split about 50-50 with buckeyes and Wolverine fans! It needs to be BG against a big, non conf. team that way Toledo hockey fans side with BG. Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Boston College, Boston University, etc...

I like the idea for over thanksgiving when student attendance is lower anyway. Alot of students are up home in Toledo anyway so they could still go. the important thing about playing a game or two in Toledo is attracting (paying) people to BG hockey for future games.

Ohio State and Miami are no longer doing the Ohio Hockey Classic. Personally, I'd like to see a weekend "tournament" with another conference. Us and ND against 2 teams from another conference during Thanksgiving weekend. The attraction would be 2 out of conference games. No chance of us playing ND or the other conference team's having to play each other. It couldn't be during Christmas break because of the GLI in Detroit.

Since we're on the subject of the new Lucas County Arena, I thought everybody might like to see some up to date photos. The arena is scheduled to open in October, and will seat around 8,000 for hockey. Enjoy!

North Dakota State would be a terrible draw since they don't have a team :-D

And more reason to have it Toledo. I'll avoid further error by suggesting that the true hockey fans, not casual like me, suggest a good opponent. :D
