While recognizing the obvious bias, I don't think you want to come across as unaware. I'll dispense with the sites that would draw partisan derision here but anybody that thinks the Toledo Museum of Art isn't worthwhile and one of the nation's finest, is in a minority. The breadth of work displayed is stunning and includes the architecture of the three main buildings- the copper clad, Frank Gehry designed School of Art; the main museum and the Glass Pavilion. In addition there are two large work areas that house the clay, metal shop and my home away from home, the forge and welding shop (no Flippers allowed! :-D ).

The main building has a fascinating antiquities section (heavy on Egypt, Greece and Rome), a modern art section and a "Master's" section with paintings, sculpture and furniture from Europe, Asia and America. The art school section has occasional shows of local artists and has a large reference library. The main building also houses the Peristyle, a unique and beautiful concert venue that has seen performances by artists ranging from the Toledo Symphony to Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. There is a cafeteria style restaurant in the main building as well.

The Glass Pavilion has a display of glass through the ages, regular glass blowing demonstrations, hour long workshops in bead making, glass fusing and seasonal glass workshops (think making glass candy canes around Christmas, etc) that are great fun for the kids.

The Glass Pavilion and Main Museum have nice giftshops and the Main Museum 's includes a large section of work for sale by local artists and TMA faculty. The downside is the cost to enter-Oh, wait, no- ITS FREE!

I could start on Toledo Botanical Gardens and the thriving art community there, not to mention the beautiful grounds, but I won't. The University of Toledo's Stranahan Arboretum is very nice as well and borders one of Toledo's finest (and they are all fine) Metroparks, Wildwood but I promised I wouldn't go on and on so I won't discuss any of these and I'll leave out the various concerts, shows and events at the Stranahan Theatre and exhibition center (check the schedule to see what's coming up that weekend).

Or your guests from Troy could stay in Findlay or Bowling Green. There are worthwhile things to do in both those cities as well.

Myles, Pollyeye's...can't go wrong with either. Just stay away from Frickers...yuk.

Depending on how you roll, the Toledo Museum of Art is damn nice, and free, except for whatever special exhibit they have. They do accept donations though.

These are some rather obscure recommendations for someone coming to BG. Sheesh, tailgate, have a few drinks, eat at Myles, and if you are out late & want to eat some more, go to the Corner Grill or call in an order to Mr. Spot's. Enough said.

Don't be such a spoilsport...it's more fun to show off a vast knowledge of local eateries and crap to do....there has to be SOME upside to living around here. :-)

Kinda depends- if HemiMan means he's a man of the Hemisphere and enjoys a broad array of cultural opportunities, then he'll appreciate the "obscure" posts. If it just means he likes Hemis, well, there's always the Tractor Pull. ;-)

Thursday night game?

Post by SW-MI Falcon »

A website is showing the game is 9/3/09. If that's true, a trip to the Round House Bar would be great on Labor day weekend. Simply the best bar in the midwest if you like beer, bikinis, and loud music. Mad dog Mike Adams, the Calabash band........not to mention the rest of the bay. You can take turns with the kids taking them to the park, carousel, ice cream, Frosty's pizza, monument, golf cart tour.

Got engaged at PIB. Right there at Heinnemans Winery...between the 3rd and 4th bottle...some 23 years ago.

6 months and a week to go!
There is no other way to finish a season other than yelling at the top of your lungs among BG's players holding the Peace Pipe aloft!

My thoughts on local stuff:

Toledo Museum of Art.

The TMA is a fine museum, a gem that is all the more amazing because it is in Toledo. It is the best in the state as far as I am concerned, and I have been to what little the rest of Ohio offers. Except for the scab that is the UT art department, slapped like a single-wide trailer hooked to a mansion with duck tape along the one side of the building, it is a great place to visit. You can basically spend a day there, certainly five or six hours.

If you have any interest in art, glass work, etc, the TMA could be a truly great surprise bonus to a trip to our area, and I say that without hesitation.

The Toledo Zoo.

The Zoo is a worthwhile trip to make, not hard to get to both if you time things well. It is highly compact, a bit worn looking I noticed last summer, but more from being well used. Much of it would be lost on younger kids, but the 30s era WPA buildings are notable. The science and industry museum within the zoo can keep kids busy all day. And truly the area is lucky to have such a densely populated zoo. Statistically I think it is second only to Columbus in terms of net animals on display, within our area.

Parking at the Zoo is exceptionally easy to navigate, I'd rate it among the easiest places to get in and out of that you'll find anyplace. Make sure to use the Rt. 25 lot, which belongs to the Zoo itself. Get pictures of your kids on the cement statues, it is a local tradition dating back 70 years.

Yet I would not take an entire day and visit it, over the museum or......

Cedar Point.

If the family likes roller coasters, you are criminal not to consider a trip here. Without peer, it has the finest collection of coasters that were, when built, the record breaker in their class. Sure, you might find one higher than any given single coaster, but never so many titans in one place. Good food, better than average amusement park prices. Worthy of visiting up here to go to on its own. More than a few historic buildings buffs of such things would appreciate

This park, the flagship of Cedar Fair, and an example of why it and its other parks thrive while Six Flags might not survive the recession.

Local stuff......

If you like military history, a few miles north, we have Fort Meigs. Always something going on there. http://www.fortmeigs.org/ At this point I would not bother with the Fallen Timbers up the river, nothing worth doing just yet.
