Thank GOD this isn't a MAC game. Let's get focused on a strong close to the conference schedule and making some noise in the tournament!

Great progress? Let's not overstate things. He has come in and been around .500 with some veteran players held over from the end of the Dakich era. He has only one of his own recruits giving him about 7-10 solid minutes a game off the bench. Moten, Clemens, Miller, Polk are all veteran players that you would expect to be providing leadership at this point in their careers. We had a nice six game streak against a very weak West Division schdeule. Then we lose to two of the worst teams in Div 1...Eastern Michigan and Canisius.falconfan1999 wrote:and we chokedWe're not quite there, yet. But Coach Orr has made some great progress in two seasons. We still have a ways to go yet, but we can be competitive, which wasn't always the case under the previous regime!
I am not hating on Coach, just being realistic. The next couple years will give us a good indication of where he's headed with this program. Right now its still about the same place it was before he got here...neutral.

Dakich's last year here we we're 3-13 in the MAC.Rollo83 wrote:Right now its still about the same place it was before he got here...neutral.
Last year under Coach Orr went 7-9 in the MAC.
This year under Coach Orr we're 8-4 in the MAC tied for second place

1999 12-6
2000 14-4
2001 10-8
2002 12-6
2003 8-10
2004 10-8
2005 5-13
2006 3-13
2007 7-9
2008 ???
Look at the last ten years, and its the same thing. Up a couple of years and down a couple of years. But never really a factor in the MAC other than Keith and Len's senior year...too bad Kent had one of the most dominate MAC teams ever at that same time.
If we end up 12-4 in the MAC, then yes we've made "great progress" this year. But given the last two games and the opponents still on our schedule, we all know 8-8 is probably much more likely than 12-4.
I give Orr credit, he has come in and taken the "talent" already assembled and got them to play respectable basketball. But admittedly the MAC is way down right now in talent...and it has been the last couple of years. Can you imagine what those Kent State, Akron and Miami teams of 2005 and 2006 would be doing in the conference right now?
It still concerns me where the talent is the next couple of years. I know we have some transfers waiting to play and we do have a couple of recruits coming in, but won't it take a couple of years for freshman to contribute...especially how Orr seems to bring them along slowly.
There is no reason we shouldn't expect BG to be a power team in the MAC most every year in basketball. But wether you go 3-13, 7-9 or 8-8, that's mediocrity...and yes, stuck in neutral.

We already went through this discussion, the "Andrew Harner" discussion 5 days ago. He thought that our record was misleading and that the fall from grace was coming. What did we do? We WON AT BUFFALO, the MAC leader. So we lose a silly nonconference game and everybody is back on the train straight to doomsday? What the hell is the matter with our fanbase? We're two wins away from a 1st round bye in the MAC tournament, with no clear favorite out there in the tourney. And yet, there is no faith in the team whatsoever, by anyone. Not in BG, not the alumni, not in the students, nobody. NOBODY believes in this team, and its maddening as hell.
Why don't we just go and chalk up an L for the Kent game on Thursday, I mean, no way we're winning that one. And those Miami and Akron games on the road, forget it, there's no way we can keep up with them. And then there's Ohio. Yup, that team we beat down in their house last month, yeah, they are so a shoo-in to beat us too.

In football I'm inclined to agree that BG should be a consistent MAC power, but in hoops what makes you say that? I'm just curious, but historically we have not ever been a consistent power in this conference, have we? If so, has it been since the days of Harold Anderson? It seems to me that our past 30-40 years has been a few up, few down, etc. And, as we all know, we have yet to win the conference championship even once in those past 40 years.Rollo83 wrote: There is no reason we shouldn't expect BG to be a power team in the MAC most every year in basketball. Throw in the fact that we have one of the worst arenas in the conference (as much as I absolutely LOVE Anderson Arena, it is falling apart), I just don't see how anyone can expect us to be a consistent power in this conference. I'd LOVE to see it, but I don't EXPECT it.
That said, I think Orr has done a good job getting the most out of what is, IMO, not a very talented team. They play their asses off almost every game. They play excellent defense more times than not. Unfortunately we look lost at times on offense, and we don't have anybody that can consistently get his own shot. Our system doesn't seem to get us many shots on it's own either. I think we WANT to try to go into the post, but we don't have guards that can feed it, nor posts that can finish when they get it. I don't know if this is coaching or just lack of offensive talent, but I'm still willing to give coach Orr a bit before I'm complaining. I do think that we need to get something from the incoming freshmen/transfers next year, otherwise I could see some people starting to get upset. I think he's done a good job coaching the talent he's got, but we need better talent if we're going to win the conference.

I'm thinking that our group of newcomers for next year may be the best single season infusion of talent that we've had in a very long time.Rollo83 wrote: It still concerns me where the talent is the next couple of years. The coaches call Graves a MAC POTY contender. McElroy is a national top 150 talent. Calhoun's credentials are well known on this board. Darion Goins is probably better than any of our currently active guards. Krauss seems to be more of a "typical MAC recruit", but has been good qualitative reviews from scouts. Also, we'll have at least one more scholarship to offer after 4/7.
