Quit yer whining...we got another verbal (TE from IL)

Post by Flipper »

TE Todd Newman, a 6'-4", 245lb bear of a man has verballed to BGSU. He picked us over NIU and the Dinardo version of Indiana. A descendant of the God of speed Mercury, Newman runs the 40 in just under a half second.

(Ok, I made that last part up, there's no 40 time listed for the kid)

Flipper:

Thanks for the good (recruiting) news.

Huskie fans are wigged out about Zook stealing their recruits; wonder how they feel about this one!

I'll assume the "Quit yer whining" comment was directing at yours truly, so I will take the opportunity to respond. Considering that in the past two years that Gregg Brandon has been a head coach and tight ends have caught about a grand total of 10 balls and really only block and/or play special teams in our scheme, I personally cannot see why we sign TWO of them in the same recruiting year.

Blocking and special teams are an important part of building a program, but unless there are more grand visions of what these kids could become . . . I think it's a stretch

And don't forget the one drop. . . . .

. . .. I bet the kid is using his 4.0 to solve some medical problem so I won't hold that drop against him. . . .too much longer. . . .

Option:

Winovich was brought in as a TE and is now projected as a LB, where, IMHO, he will be a stalwart and, potentially, a star.

I believe Brandon emphasized last year that he wanted to get more athletes and be less concerned about positions. At 6-4, 245, I can see this kid becoming a DE, especially given his lineage to Mercury.

So stop yer whining, will ya? :P

Winovich was also projected at QB too. Plain and simple the kid was a great athlete and if you want to get specific about him, I'm glad this staff completely wasted a year of eligibility so he could cover special teams and you still don't know how good of a linebacker you have.

I think athletically he's a dramatic step up for us over anyone currently playing the position, but he hasn't seen meaningful game experience at the position yet, so who knows . . .

I think we have far greater needs than to sign two TEs, such as a shut down or even a guy that can cover DB and several of them and LB depth. I would also like to add another RB since our top 4 will be graduating over the next two years and we have Petey Hood left. Nothing against him, but I would feel much better having multiple backs.

Option: True that.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm feeling good about Dozier and Perry. I think both kids will be very good DBs. I share your concern about RB. I think that has to be a top priority for the remainder of the recruiting season.

87,

I would agree with Perry and Dozier and who knows maybe Nate Waldron too. I just struggle with seeing not only Antraz Burton decomitting but BGSU not offering or waiting on guys just b/c we have Terrill Mayberry and Jelani Jordan back for another year. I think with Dozier's size, he may evenutally project at safety, but I would love to hear the reasoning behind thinking that Jordan's and Mayberry's spots are automatically locked up b/c they're returning starters. When the truth is, those guys couldn't guard anyone this year, winning record or not . . .

There's all kinds of DB talent and RB talent in Ohio that is/was ripe for the taking and we're more concerned with signing TEs . . . That's my gripe!

Keeping score so far . . .

1. Guy Williamson, OL (Ill)
2. Robert Mahoney, OL (Ohio)
3. Shane Steffy, OL (Pa)
4. Phillip Pollard, OL (Ohio)
5. Rhett Magner, DB- Unconfirmed (Alaska)
6. Michael Reams, TE (Ohio)
7. Todd Newman, TE (Ill)
8. Cory Olanyian, WR (Ohio)- Unconfirmed
9. Luke Alexander, WR (Ohio)
10. Stephen Zywotek, DE (Ohio)
11. Nick Lawrence, LB (Michigan)
12. Freddie Barnes, QB/Ath (Ill)

Option--there is no emoticon for "lighten up, Francis"

Anyway, my comments were directed at Grant--I know it's his sight, but man that guy just bugs me sometimes with all that stuff about spelling and grammer and puncuation... we could care less!

Waldron, Cole and Hood were RB's in high school. With RS soph QB Van Johnson has worked out at RB also.

This offense badly needs a TE that has the speed to get upfield. Hopefully, one of these guys will be that TE when 2005 or 2006 rolls around
