"Dave Clawson: It has, first of all, a great history and a great tradition going back to the days of Doyt Perry and Don Nehlen and certainly more recently with what Gary Blackney and Urban Meyer did here."

Well, three out of four isn't bad. Let's just hope that he picks one of the three coaches, and not the one, to emulate.

Blackney??

Post by IronFalcon77 »

mmisbg, If the one you are referring to is Gary Blackney, lets not forget the great things he did for BG football. He took a program that had been down for years, and urned it into the team to beat in the MAC. 2 MAC Championships in his first 2 years, and a 73 yd fake punt by a fat A** punter from cfmu from being 3 out of his first 4. I played for Coach Blackney, and have the utmost respect for him, as should BG fans. He brought respectability and a desire to win back to the Doyt.

I agree Coach Blackney, did a great job with the program. He was hired before my junior year and immediately BG became MAC champs and won the California Raisin Bowl over Fresno State as 14 point underdogs.

If Blackney wasn't successful early on, who knows where BG would be now with the program.

Thanks for the link, Sidejudge. It's great to hear optimism from the coaching staff for a change, and I'm definitely getting excited to see the team this spring. Unfortunately, I'm going to Kent State next year to work on my PhD, but if BG is going to Kent next year, I'll be there rooting for BG and I'd love to meet up with everybody if possible.

+1.

I know it didn't end well for Blackney but his first 4 years he was 36-8-2 with two MAC titles and two bowl wins. And we were close to 4 straight titles.

I always had lots of respect for Blackney.

Love hearing Coach Clawson talk about crashing the BCS party...LOVE THAT!

Spring game is less than 2 months away!!!

How correct you are. Meyer never took us to a bowl game, so I hope he does better than him.

Other than national signing day and 1 article in the Toledo Free Press, this is the only interview with Coach Clawson I've seen in almost three months.

Instead of covering a handful of whiny students playing Tom Hayden because a 50 year old basketball arena is being replaced, it would be nice to see some type of coverage regarding the leader of the BGSU football program.

Nice article, thanks for posting it! I like the attitude that he is bringing into to the program. I think Clawson's going to do an awesome job here!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

HAHA, nope. Just seriously love to see our coach quoted as setting the BCS as his ultimate goal. Obviously it's a long shot that takes a perfect storm to accomplish. You need to have a great team the same year you play a tough schedule and you have to go undefeated, which is hard for any team at any level. Still, I freaking LOVE to see that as the goal.

I seem to remember our previous coach's goal when he got here was to "Win the West". Now I'm all for winning our division, and then a MAC title, but if you set your sights higher, those things will come. Busting into the BCS should be the ultimate goal of any coach at BG.
