Is the Stroh Center in jeopardy of not being built???
I went through and read all these posts, and my head hurts.
Essentially people are bitching about their $60 student fee/semester going toward building a new building because "they won't get any use out of it"?
If that is correct, then let me rant....
Student fees cover all sorts of crap I don't use, it's just part of your tuition. Deal with it.
I believe student fees make it possible to attend sporting events free. If they've never attending a sporting event, they should demand a refund for that.
Student fees used to cover intramural sports (don't get me started on that scheme of chargin $50 for a 5-5 basketball team). If they didn't play IM sports from 05-06 they should demand a refund for that.
Student fees/technology fees cover the computer labs throughout campus. If you never have used one of those, you should demand a refund for that.
Student fees cover all sorts of crap, get over it.
The stupidity of some people bothers me most of the time. I feel that most like to complain simply to complain.

Holy crap. It is absolutely embarrassing to read the drivel in the comments by the students for "USG reform," or whatever the hell they are calling themselves. The sheer, willful ignorance of these students is simply appalling. Have any of them ever even heard of ADA? Have any of them cared to ask for feasibility studies from the AD? Have any of them ever done anything meaningful on campus, outside of chalking cheap Ghandi quotes on sidewalks?BGSU33 wrote:Coalition for USG Reform exceeds signature goal:

I hate to be so brazen in my assessment of this group, but they are making it difficult to do assess them in any other manner. It has been said before in this thread, but they simply can not go around insulting the generosity of some of our most dedicated and thoughtful alumni without drawing the ire of anyone who gives a damn about the future of this university. They don't want to pay $60 a semester? Great, then they can transfer to another university. We do have 12 other public institutions in the State of Ohio, and the academic transfer models in place throughout the state should make it easy.
What I would like to know is who is driving this campaign. And I'm not just talking about the student leadership, I'm talking about faculty. Does anyone know?

Since I'm graduating in May, I don't care about the fee or whatever, but I can't believe that 1,300 students don't want to pay an extra $60 of tuition. I can respect the idea that maybe 1% of the student body probably legitimately can't afford that, but this is a case of students just being ridiculous and exercising their supposed free speech muscle.
Had USG put this up for vote to the students, it wouldn't even come close to 1,300 students voting on it. It's the negative perception that the university is charging the students, so they look like the big bad wolf because they already get so much from the students. It's an athletic facility, it's for the better of the whole university and I think it's a shame that the students are complaining about some petty fee for something that will help BGSU immensely.

The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
Let's not forget about the irreparable damage this has done to USG. This whole debacle has severely undermined any authority USG previously had. I hope you're happy, "Students for USG Reform", you have succeeded in "reforming" the USG right into obscurity.
The most important thing to do right now is to get out and tell other students about why they should vote for the fee increase. For BG students reading this, get out and vote, and help convince others. For BG alums or just fans of the Falcons, it is your duty to do whatever you can to help pass the referendum. Contact students however you can, correct the lies and misinformation the Students for USG reform are spreading, and whatever else you can do.

Bullschit. It's a system and these students are working the system as it was designed and intended. It's a system of checks and balances and that should NOT go away because of this one issue.murphdogg wrote:Let's not forget about the irreparable damage this has done to USG. I will say that reading those comments reveals that reasoned thought is being practiced by a very loud minority of students. It's more humorous than sad, thankfully. I just hope they lose the vote - and it will be up to the student who want Stroh to be more passionate than those who don't.

I hope so too, I really, really do. But from what I have gathered, it seems much more likely many of us on here aren’t going to like the outcome of this vote. All you hear about is students opposing the issue, but where is the support going to come from? What bothers me most is this is a chance for all students to help contribute to something very beneficial to the university for years to come in one way or another. Not just for athletics, not just for graduation ceremonies, not just for concerts, not just for guest speakers – for all of these events and more. BG isn’t just in need for a facility like this now, it’s been in need of one for a many years! These students have a chance to help set into motion something to built on this campus that they can return to campus to see and use and will be beneficial and useful for many years to come. Instead, they want to shoot this down for the entire university because of their own individual thought.Rightupinthere wrote:I just hope they lose the vote - and it will be up to the student who want Stroh to be more passionate than those who don't.
GO BG!!!
To speak to another point though, lets not pretend that USG is suddenly a serious voice for students on campus. This topic has sparked debate in the past, and frankly, even if I'm in support of the project, I though their bill was a farce, much as their entire existence as a "representative body" always has been.
USG was attacked when it was formed because students didn't feel a need for such a group. It has always had zealous defenders who insist it is a valid and true voice of students on campus, and just as often, you'll get a standard line from Whipple or others backing that up.
In truth, it is a bunch of kiddies playing student council. Always has been, always will be. They follow the administrative wind like a kite, flop like a wet noodle, only rarely tossing a token effort to seem like they are not a puppet of the administration.
Oh, here is the guys Facebook page, complete with his pathetic Ohio State jersey on. Yeah. He likes Ron Paul (figures,) wears an OSU jersey while at BGSU games and advocating against (if not directly so) a convo center, and works for a radio station nobody can hear. What a joke.

So what makes all of this more amusing, is that we have an overly dramatic effort attacking another silly group of kids, about something that will wind-up getting done anyway.

Whether or not you think the comments of these individuals are trivial, humerous, or sad in context, the fact remains that students should be aware of where their money is going. Students should have a say on what that money is spent on, especially when some groups have shown poor decision making processes in the past. (I am not saying that BGSU has had made poor choices, just that some groups with money and power ignore the masses)
If the students are becoming more aware of how their university is being run, I think that despite the outcome of this vote that everyone from the administration down to the students will be better off.

I can't disagree with you at all. I believe students SHOULD be asking these questions of EVERY department that receives general fee dollars. This is an organized, though misinformed, group. I am not most dissapointed in this group or those who are leading it for all the wrong reasons. I am most dissapointed in USG and the administration. This group who has build their little house of cards on half truths at best should have been put down like a lame horse quickly by using the actual facts. Because that didn't, and isn't happening this group now has legs and is gaining momentum every day. Crush it now with the truth and let the refferendum vote happen. If it's done right the students, armed with the facts, will overwhelmingly say they want the Stroh Center and all is just. I'm just afraid that will not happen.

Of course students should have the facts. Naturally they should take the time to know how the institution they asked to go to school at runs, and whose reputation they invest their attending college in.
The thing is, they don't.
And then they raise hell when they learn half of the truth, as presenting by one side or the other, and think they know what they are talking about.
The thing is, they don't.
And just having the facts is not enough. It requires that the students be able and prone to demonstrate the ability to have a rational discussion about the facts, with an eye on not simply their own few months at BGSU.
The thing is, they don't.
These are still college KIDS, 18 years or older not withstanding. They are not in the real world, are still learning what it means to function in it, and tend to be more like teenagers at times. So be it, it's what going to college is for. But I'm not going to pretend to treat them as sage adults, whose world-view is either deep or drawn from some time-tested insight.

A couple things to point out:
1) Yes, Rich is the GM of WFAL - a position that grants him a full tuition waiver for this year. Lovely how he takes every chance he can to cut down the University that's letting him attend for free this year.
2) The support for the Stroh Center is coming. The Pro-Stroh students are organizing, and you can expect to see plenty from our side once students are back on campus.
