If everything is on the table then the students need to conspire to end Tenure as part of Prof compensation, and also end the way current retirement pensions are funded, Just as every business across the country is cutting back to save jobs with pay cuts they are all also cutting matching 401k contributions, so If profs want to continue to contribute 10% of their pay to their plan they should, but the UNIV should not contribute a dime, until things change and are manageable. Currently the University I believe puts in 14% of the annual salry of each staff member regardless of the amount the staff member contributes. Most companies are at 6%. EXCESS right there that is easily cut.
"Staff contribute 10.0% of their salary each pay period to the retirement plan, which is deducted on a pre-tax basis. The university also contributes to the staff member's retirement plan based on 14.0% of his or her salary. Ohio Revised Code Section 3305.6(d) allows OPERS to withhold a portion of the employer’s contribution to offset any negative financial impact the OPERS Traditional Plan may experience by the offering of alternative retirement plan options."Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS)
I just put a post on the USCHO Forum page. Hopefully that'll stir up some e-mail from college hockey fans in general. No problem 'Derm. I'll let everybody know if I get any kind of response.
This issue saddens me deeply. I can't believe it has even come down to this. I have sent emails to everyone I can think of trying to gather support, and the general consensus is that the community wants the program to stay.... but the administration and board of trustees doesn't seem to care either way.
Has anyone tried contacting Dan Bylsma? He's probably the most current standout in the public eye when it comes to BG hockey... he might be a good ally to have, but I can't find his email address anywhere.
Hope this doesn't come true. Hockey is the only sport I love to watch on a consistent basis. I'll have some pictures of the OSU/BG game from this weekend up soon, I was there taking photos. Roll along.
Okay, I contacted all of the trustees, various other people, Cartwright, Christopher, Whipple... I got one response back so far.
What do you guys make of it:
Thanks so much for your letter and I appreciate hearing from you.
It's my understanding from fine folks at the university that there are
rumors that hockey will be terminated as a sport at BGSU. Please know
that from the Board of Trustees directions that no such topic has ever
been discussed. As trustees we depend on our university administrators
for decisions as each of the various areas of the university are
responsible for the workings of their departments. I have not heard
anything at this time from athletics that this has been considered but I
will tell you that every area and program in each of the university
areas always needs to be evaluated in relation to the over all direction
of the university. Pure economics has forced alot of companies and
institutions to look at everything in relation to the big picture. This
is true for BGSU.
Hope this helps and please know that no matter what happens in athletics
it's alway emotional and has a former coach at BGSU I understand all the
traditions that go into any program. On of my best friends as a young
coach was Jerry York and the late Terry Flanagan and I know that program
well even though time does not allow me to see many games.
In closing please know your thoughts are well accepted by me and I
appreciate your interest. Feel free to correspond anytime.
What a load of crap. It just repeats the rumor and speculation of the sent-trib article and even throws in MY OWN baseless speculation that it was done to spur the alumni into stepping up to the plate. At least they confirmed from George Roll that the alumni are, in fact, doing just that.
