OK, I'm not positive about this, but I believe that Frontiers was first done on either 11/15/03 at the Kent game, or on 11/29/03 at the Toledo game, although I'm leaning towards the Kent game. Anyway, it was done for sure at the UT game, the MAC championship, and again at the Bowl Game. I'll let the people who actually marched it comment on it. Jeff

It had to be the Kent St. game. We still had another Classic Jazz show we never got to that was supposed to be for the Toledo show but instead we did Frontiers for 14 millions shows...

Yup, Jeff, you were right.... Kent, UT, MACC, and MCB... although for the MACC, we only performed part of the show to give the Miami band time to perform at halftime. (Unfortunately, their show consisted of marching onto the field in block formation, playing, and marching off, because not enough marchers could make it to the game. Slackers.

)

So I'm surprised you never saw it, bgguy, at least if you were here last year! If you're registered at yahoo, you can join the BGSUFMB group and listen to the Frontiers music there. It's under the "files" section and is in the "2003-2004 season" folder.

Frontiers was first performed at last year's KSU Game. A little backround info about the show will help you understand why it means so much to those of us who marched it last year and why we are in aww of it.

A frontier is a boundry between what is known and unknown, where we have been and where we havn't been, what has been done what has never been done before.

"Frontiers" is a musical representation of the emotions that are related to being a member of the Falcon Marching Band in 3 movements. The first movement deals with the excitment of first arriving for Fundies week in August and all emotions and potential of a new year. The second deals with all of the blood, sweat, tears, and hard work that the band puts in on a daily basis throughout the year, ending on open 5ths to represent something that is stable, but not totally resloved. The third movement starts out with a pause to reflect on where we've been and to remember that we do not always finish the journey with everyone that we start with. After that, the tempo picks up as the season comes to a close, which is represented in return of the main theme. The show ends with a "flashback" of the entire season.

"Frontiers" was written for, and dedicated to, the 2003 Falcon Marching Band, with the music and drill being written together to make for a truely intergrated show.

BGGUY, hopefully you can see and tell that this show means a lot to those who marched it. I would recomend that, if possible, you get ahold of someone who has the show on DVD and watch it with them. Listening to a recording is good, but in this case the show is every bit as much about the drill as it is the marching. I have marched some really good shows, and playing with you for the America show was great, but I feel that "Frontiers" was the best and most memorable show I've ever performed.

Where did that come from Chris? I don't remember her ever saying that one. No big deal but because I never heard that, the whole thing took a different meaning for me. The first song was more the band is going along all good, then the 2nd was the frustrations with certain others taking over and the program falling apart so to speak, and the third movement seemed to be everything getting back to the level we should be on as the FMB. Since Nowlin wrote the music and was here during all those years of change, I figured it was more than just last season.

I do vaguely remember something like that passage. I'm pretty sure Ryan didn't write the music as a statement about those running the program!

Where did it come from though?

I didn't mean about those running the program but rather the way the program itself went from greatness, to a decline of frustrations, to back how it should be if that makes sense.

I also remember reading something to the effect of that passage about "Frontiers." I also heard a rumor that it was about a break-up, but I immediately dismissed that as, well, bullshit band rumors. Because, really, let's dispell this right now... It's bullshit.

I remember hearing something along those lines at some point. I could very easily be wrong or something got misunderstood along the way somwhere. No matter what it stands for, or what it meant to various people, it was still a kick ass show.
