Browns continue to pluck Ravens

QB Harris latest to come over. Garcia, Faine on IR

BEREA - Quarterback Jeff Garcia and center Jeff Faine were placed on injured reserve, and the Browns continued to pluck talent from the Baltimore Ravens in a flurry of roster moves Tuesday.

The Browns picked up a promising young quarterback -- former Bowling Green star Josh Harris -- to take Garcia's place. The sixth-round draft pick was signed to the 53-man roster from the Ravens' practice squad, and Nate Hybl was waived from the practice squad.

The Browns will have rookie Luke McCown along with eight-year veteran Kelly Holcomb, who is still recovering from three cracked ribs, and Harris going into the home finale Sunday against the Chargers.

Faine went down on the first play of the fourth quarter in last weekend's 37-7 loss at Buffalo. He was originally diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, but an MRI indicated ligament damage that would require a six-week recovery. Three-year veteran Melvin Fowler will take over at center against the Chargers.

Garcia and Faine were hurt on the same play, a sack and fumble. Garcia tore the medial collateral ligament and injured the medial capsule in his left knee. Surgery is not expected.

In other moves, offensive lineman Chad Beasley and defensive lineman Antonio Garay were waived off injured reserve and reserve-PUP, respectively. Offensive lineman Craig Osika was signed to the active roster, and running back Sultan McCullough, a USC product who has been with Washington, Carolina and Tampa Bay, was signed to the practice squad.

The Browns now have 17 players on injured lists, surpassing 15 at the end of 2003.

Harris is the son of former Cincinnati Bengals tight end M.L. Harris. At 6-foot-1 and 238 pounds, he was a run-pass threat at Bowling Green, where he set school records for rushing touchdowns (43), total touchdowns (47) and points scored (284) and finished second in passing yards (7,503) and passing touchdowns (55).

Harris joined Indiana's Antwaan Randle El (44 rush, 42 pass, 1998-2001) as the only two players in NCAA Division 1-A history to rush and throw for 40 touchdowns in a career.

Harris compiled a .750 winning percentage as a college starter wining 24 games out of 32.
It might not foreshadow anything in the Browns' general manager search, which might include Baltimore's Ozzie Newsome and Phil Savage as candidates, but Harris is the second former Raven picked up by the Browns in the past month. Damion Cook was claimed off waivers Nov. 17, and has started the past three games at right guard.
