That's how mid-major athletic departments survive and "thrive" if managed
correctly. Playing Troy or Wyoming is fine but those are money losers and
we still need the "big" paydays to finance the entire athletic department !

PEOPLE, PAY ATTENTION!!!
Everyone needs to realize that the U is NOT going to cut football or basketball! IT JUST ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN...NOR SHOULD IT!!! So STOP wasting time talking about it. Our energies need be focused on what can realistically be done to convince the U that they should not drop the hockey program. All this other talk and arguing is pointless, so KNOCK IT OFF!!!

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

You might be missing where BG is one of the "mid majors" which is seen as a "giant killer."murphdogg wrote:People need to take a deep breath, relax, and realize we are all on the same side.
Cutting football would not be a financially sound decision. Yes, we are never going to compete for a National Championship, at least not in the current system, and attendance has been lacking, but that's not where small conference schools get their money. BCS teams pay huge sums of money for cannon fodder in their non-conference schedule. This past year, Texas paid $900,000 to Florida Atlantic to come get blown out in Austin. Fellow MAC school Western Michigan received $800,000 from Nebraska to play in Lincoln. The university should, as distasteful as it sounds, bite the bullet and schedule a Michigan or a Florida for the soul purpose of getting our asses kicked and walking out of the stadium with a fistful of cash for our troubles. One or two games like this per year would do wonders for our financial woes
These guys are shy about playing BG because, as recent history shows, we play the big boys tough and close. That's not good for BC$ rankings.

We should not propose to be cutting any BGSU sports at all. The problem the football team is going to have scheduling the Big, Nationally known schools are two fold. First, the national powers gain very little, if anything, in the BCS by beating us. Second, they stand to lose a lot in the BCS by losing to us. That's not much motivation to play us. I hope the football team does continue to try to schedule the national teams as it can be a pretty good pay day for Athletics. I know we play Missouri this fall which is a good thing. I'm not sure what other big name schools we play next season, but I hope there are some. These schedules are made out years in advance.

That's not true...playing us HAS impacted the BCS standings as recently as the 2004 season. We dropped Auburn to play our season opener at Oklahoma. As the season ended we were ranked in the top 25 (and then just outside of it after the debacle at Toledo). That played a substantial part in Oklahoma getting the nod for the Championship game over Auburn
