THE GOAL!!!

MACMAN
I have a very old VCR tape of the semifinal game against MSU and the final against UMD. I think the tape itself is in decent shape but cartridge part doesn't function. I should find someone that works on those types of things and get it fixed and onto a DVD. I had to erase part of the 3rd OT as I was taping because I was getting towards the end of the tape and I didn't want to miss the end of the game. I ended up having enough tape left at the end to get some of the Toledo TV coverage the next day.

I sent the link of The Goal to my son who in turn sent it to a bunch of his buddies. His email read:
"Oh....and want to feel like you are 19 again......and attempt not to get
teary eyed in front of co-workers?For your listening pleasure.....the smooth stylings of one Joe Borenstein and one John Bowers calling and reacting to THE GOAL."
Some of those buddies he emailed included Joe Borenstein and John Bowers who was Joe's color guy that night. Joe sent back the following email and with his permission I am posting it for everyone to read.
Dave & Falcon Fans Everywhere,
When I read Dave Runta's e-mail this afternoon, and saw that Dave had said you'll get teary eyed when you hear the play by play of Gino's Golden Goal for BG 25 years ago, I thought, that's stupid. I won't get emotional. It was so long ago. Then, I clicked on the download, and listened...
As I heard my voice on that broadcast...it brought me back the Olympic Ice Arena in Lake Placid, where another miracle on ice had occured four years earlier, and working with John. My eyes started to well up. Would John Bowers and I be the only student announcers at WBGU-FM ever to get the opportunity to call such a hockey game? I guess the emotions have been running high the past week or so...as they should. But none higher than they are right now for this 45 year old BG Alum. Literally, tears are in my eyes...and I'm all choked up with emotion.
When I heard the part where Dan Kane hits Gino Cavallini with the pass, and BG scored and won the title in the fourth overtime, the hair on the back of my neck stood up...and a chill ran through out my body. Next week is the 25th anniversary of that sacred moment in Falcon Sports history. Please don't let it be the last. Keep up the passion...keep up the Face book stuff...let's still formulate a plan to save BGSU Hockey FOREVER! Bad economic times do bring disaster...however...they also bring out the best in Americans...and especially Falcon Hockey Fans! Remember what happened to the hockey team the year before in March of '83? The big snub from the NCAA selection committee. Out of the ashes, the Phoenix will be replaced by a giant Falcon...and he's wielding a hockey stick!
Thank you Dave, for thet dowload of that goal. I was having a great day at work, calling on clients who are struggling in this economic climate...but they're optimistic. Hearing that goal again...well...it just made a great day even better.
Roll On! B-G! S-U!

Thanks FindlayFalcon, for sharing that letter! It was awesome, and just one more fantastic memory associated with this program and many more reasons why we cannot get rid of it!!
I remember "fighting" with John Bowers for seats in the front row of Section A in the years after the National Championship!!!

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

There are obviously several of you that probably could do this more justice, but here's a write-up I did of the 83-84 season for BGSUsports.com, piecing together information from various sources...

Anniversary Date?
Nice write-up on the season, and great to hear the mp3 of the final call. What is the actual anniversary date of the national championship game?

I'll tell you another "The Goal" that gets way overlooked in all of this and it happened the week before. Mike Pikul against BU, also in OT, to even get us to Lake Placid. I didn't get to go to that game, but my Dad was in old Walter Brown Arena that night with about 20 other BG die-hards and administrators. We listened to the game on WKIQ with the "voice of BG hockey" Glen Cerny on the call. I remember my Dad calling us from a pay phone(no cell phones then lol!!) in Walter Brown right after the game and you could hear the BG players whooping it up in the background behind him. The next call he made was making reservations in Lake Placid. For those who don't know in those days the NCAA regionals were on campus and 2 game, total goals series. BG had started Collins in net the first night after Kruzer had lost 3 straight games. Mistake, Collins played poorly and BU's Daskalakis played great. BU won 6-3. I felt like I did in 79 when we went to Minny and laid an egg. We had just choked and another great season would soon be flushed away. However, with Kruzer back between the pipes and basically starting the game losing 3-0 the guys played arguably their best game of the year and led 4-1 at the end of regulation. Thus setting the stage for Pikuls rare goal, he only had 7 that year, a, from what my Dad said, fantastic play where he swept the puck up off the half-board and let a laser go quickly that Daskalakis never even saw until it was too late.
All of this talk the last week has brought the emotions of that 3 week period back so clearly, like it was yesterday, not 25 years ago. Two heart wrenching OT loses in JLA the first week and figuring we would now be snubbed by the selection committee.....again. To the the elation of getting an NCAA bid. Then the horrible 6-3 Friday loss and spending all day that Saturday feeling the season was over again. The amazing 5-1 OT win and the realization we were actually going to Lake Placid. The place where the Miracle on Ice happened. The solid semi-final win over MSU and then the fear down by 2 goals very late, that, after all of this, we were going to come up just short. Then........divine intervention. We get a kick off of something on the end boards and "Ski" taps it in to tie it up. Then OT after OT after OT...chance after chance....save after save. I remember that by the 4th OT I was so mentally and physically exhausted, as a fan, I didn't know how much longer I could go on under the pressure.....much less the players, many of whom were staring to cramp badly by this time. You could have cut the tension in that Arena in the 4th OT with a knife. Every shot was a gasp by one of the two groups of fans. Gino's goal happened so quickly, in a blink of an eye it was all over. Kane stops, turns, feeds the pass all in one swift motion....Gino darts across the front and tucks the backhand past Kosti. I just remember jumping up and down and hugging some lady next to me that I didn't even know......what a roller coaster of 3 weeks.
Man I hope we all get to do that again sometime..........
