Is the Stroh Center in jeopardy of not being built???

Very well done. Exceptional really.

Sometimes the apathy and self loathing of BGSU Students really bothers and puzzles me. Are people protesting just to protest? 60 bucks really isn't an extravagant amount of money to improve YOUR university. I just don't get it.

I hope to see events at the Stroh Center very soon!

There are printed out info sheets in the Sundial. I don't know if they were put out by students or the University, but thank you to whoever did.

Dr. Cartwright (or at least her office) sent out an email to the students this afternoon with most of that same info. I think it was good for giving the students who might not know all of the workings of this issue the information that they need to make their decision. The following is from the email:

Students:

I want to give you an update on the Stroh Center. As you most likely
are aware, undergraduate students on our main campus will hold an
online election this Friday, March 27 to affirm or overturn the
Undergraduate Student Government's (USG) endorsement of a student fee
to help fund the new 4,700-seat center.

The approximate $60 per semester fee ($50 for the Stroh Center and $10
for new student parking) won't begin until the Stroh Center is
completed in 2011.

A "NO" vote in the election signals support for the original USG
decision and for the Stroh Center.

I believe this project is absolutely critical to the future of BGSU.
Students will begin and end their college careers at the Stroh Center.
The arena will be the site of new student convocations, graduation
ceremonies, concerts, high profile speakers, and other campus and
community events.

In addition, it will serve as the new home for Falcon basketball and
volleyball. Interestingly, athletic events will account for only
about half of the 200-250 expected "booked" dates. For the other
100-150 events a year, the building will generate revenue through
trade shows, convocations, lectures, concerts and other rentals.

Construction of the Stroh Center and the Wolfe Center for the Arts,
both of which begin this fall, mark the beginning of a long overdue
renaissance on campus for our buildings and infrastructure. Projects
beginning over the next few years include renovation of the Student
Health Center, major upgrades to dining facilities and residence
halls, and renovation plans for the University's oldest buildings -
Hanna, Moseley and University Halls. We will also make major upgrades
of critical campus infrastructure and implement an energy conservation
plan.

I strongly encourage all of you to review the Frequently Asked
Questions about the Stroh Center and the other information available
at www.bgsu.edu/strohcenter.

Many of you will graduate before the Stroh Center and the other
improvements are completed. However, I hope you will support the
project to leave a lasting legacy for future students - just as
previous generations did with their support of important student
facilities like the Student Recreation Center and the Bowen-Thompson
Student Union.

Seemed to refute at least a few of the "the university has their priorities out of order" arguments fairly soundly, mentioning not only the Wolfe Center, but planned improvements for parking as well as some of the older buildings on campus. (Now, just how long it will take for those improvements to take place... who knows. But it was good to mention that they are not ignoring that they need to be done.)

200-250 events a year is a pretty impressive number.

Then consider the 100-150 she quoted as non-BG athletic events and realize that for 1/3 of the year, thousands will be exposed to BGSU. With a bookstore/souvenir shop and the Hall of Fame in the lobby and orange and brown plastered around the site, what a great way to introduce BG to outsiders!

I dont think the 200-250 events is a realistic number... optimistic... but really how can this facility be filled that often? Are there practice courts in the new building? Where will the teams practice? Anderson?

BG lacks hotels... and so the thought of conventions or trade shows may never materialize.

and there is a bigger... nicer... soon to be open Downtown Toledo Ice Arena which could do the same thing.

I'd vote for the Stroh center to built... but lets not mislead the voters with some of these statements.

I believe one of the donations (Schmidthorst family, I believe?) was to provide practice areas for the teams.

I thought 200-250 seemed high, but it's talking days, not events, which can be chunks. Or maybe they're referring to four HS games in a day as four seperate "events"?

Either way, it sounds like it's going to get a lot more use than Hoops and commencement, which is awesome.

YES, there is a practice facility in the plans for the Stroh Center! The was a $1,000,000 gift from the Miles family, I believe, specifically for this purpose.
