I don't know what Matt did.

It sounds to me like we have at least a handful of posters with disorderly conduct convictions on their resumes.

Let me tell you about mine.

I was at a party once when I was a junior, drinking keg beer and getting nicely blitzed. The occasion was the after party for a collection of student organizations from across Ohio who had gathered in Bowling Green for a conference. And just as I was getting to know a cute freshman from Miami a little better, the cops came in.

The neighbors had called. The party was too noisy. Chaos ensued, with the cops telling everyone to go home and people scattering in all directions. And, hell, I didn't want to go home. I wanted to figure out where everyone else was going (including the Miami freshman) because I was having a great time. But it was pretty chaotic. So I kept hanging around on the edge of the front lawn, trying to figure out which bar this party was going to head to. A cop told me a couple of times to leave. He was pretty direct about it, and he wasn't showing much of a sense of humor about it. The second time, he stuck his finger right in my chest pretty firmly and told me to get lost.

I wasn't taking that too well. Also, I knew a couple of cops in town, so I was curious who this guy was.

So I stepped in front of him asked him what "his badge number" was. I wasn't belligerent about it. I was very polite, in fact. But those were my words.

Of course, it was big, big mistake. And totally stupid. But, like I said, I was pretty hammered.

So the cop put the cuffs on me and put me in the car for disorderly.

Natch, a couple of weeks later, I pled guilty. I was a few weeks short of 21, and they could have always added that extra charge.

Was what I did dumb? Yeah. I see now the guy was doing his job. Maybe he got his ass kicked at a party or two in the past -- and while I wasn't belligerent in the least, I was bigger than that cop, and maybe he was a wee bit wary.

And maybe he was just having a bad day.

Anyway, if I were a football player, should the coach suspend me for something like that?

I don't think so. That kind of stuff is nonsense. IF a kid can't get boozed up in Bowling Green underage ... uh... how would we ever field a hockey team? :)

I figure whatever it was that Matt did had to be more obnoxious than whatever it was I did.

But I don't know. So I'm not jumping to conclusions.

That party didn't happen to be at 317 N Summit was it ('90 or '91)?

Wow, you got busted for that? I once stepped off of Wooster in a halloween costume (Mad Max face paint) to execute a perfect Michael Jacksonesque package grab at a cop in a cruiser. He swung a quick U turn and told me to get in the back of his car. We then made our way to the parking lot behind the then vacant BW-3. I put my hands on the back of his seat to block the anticipated club shot to the head, but all he did was yell at me. He also told me to get my drunk ass back up to Perrysburg.

I stopped at Howard's for a pitcher first out of pure spite and stupidity. Thankfully, our paths didn't cross again.

I also got caught relieving myself on the side of the national gaurd armory early one Saturday. Amazingly, even though I was within a half block of the always open Taco Bell (you know, the one WITH an actual toilet) the cop just checked me for wants and warrants and told me to quit peeing on buildings.

In short, I found the BG Police to be remarkably tolerant when forced to deal with the idiocy that marked my partying years...

Schade,

I lived at that house at the time... I wasn't at the party in question, but I heard all about. I can vouch for you on that one. Funny that we got busted for a few of the tame parties, but never for the really large ones!

Oh, I get it...you're practicing a comedy routine.

Funny stuff. But you may want to keep working on it. Not too funny.

I have to disagree with you on this one Schad.

I have all of you beat!

My disorderly conduct was just pure stupidity, I don't even have the luxury of blaming alcohol

I was on my way home from work one night when I was driving down 25 south of Portage. All summer long I had been saying that I wanted one of these orange barrels they had. They had been re-paving 25 for months and they had those barrels all over the place. So I decide today I'm gonna take it.

I park my Toyota MR2 to grab a barrel only to realize that those things are quite large, and MR2's have very tiny trunks. The only way it would fit was to put it in my passenger seat...So I did. What the hell I said, I'm on country roads and we never see cops out this way. Wrong. I was stopped at the stop sign waiting to turn only to see a Sheriff coming down that road...dammit. He passed me while I was at the sign only to turn around and pull me over. He wanted to know where I got the barrel. I whipped up a VERY good (IMO) story about "borrowing" it for a party at my place, not wanting people to park in my yard and all. He didn't really give a crap about my story and told me it was still a theft offense. What a prick.

He escorted me back down the road so I could put it back, only to have another Sheriff out there. Apparently he had called one of his cop buddies to come laugh at me. He was a total prick charging me with the maximum possible offense (a rather high misdemeanor) for what was just a practical joke. Luckily the Wood County Prosecutor agreed with my assertion that the cop was taking it too far, and lowered the charge to Disorderly Conduct. I pled guilty, paid my fine, and was on my way.

Boy was I dumb...I should know to steal barrels in bigger vehicles & not in daylight! :)

I don't know how things stand these days. Maybe our hockey players fall asleep alone in their beds before dark with photos of Hope Taft on their bedstands.

But when I was there, on the nights when our hockey players weren't earning their way to another NCAA berth?

They were getting hammered. Usually at a certain pub near SBX.

Back to DT talk

Post by Falconboy »

First of all Hicks was not a DT , he was a DE. Even though he was a little small height wise , he had the beef at 260 for a good DE. I don't know how quick or athletic Brad Williams is , but I know without a doubt that if he is indeed only 259 at DT he will get used like a rag doll against OK, with their O-line averaging probably at least 325.

falconboy, Hicks played DT or "noseguard" his Senior season and possibly before that (frankly, I don't recall off the top of my head).

History is full of examples of smaller, quicker underdogs defeating their larger, immobile, slow-witted foes (cf. Jack and the Beanstalk and David and Goliath).

You are the prime example of a numbers guy. You want to pick your roster solely based on measureables like heigth, weight etc... When they start carrying scales and tape measures on the field to determine the outcome, I'll come ovder to your side of thinking

I'm all for the size is overrated, yadda, yadda yadda stuff. But honestly, falconboy is right. Our DTs have been getting abused by larger offensive lines for years now, the quality of the players in question hasn't mattered. Even when Hicks was here, we still had people run on us quite well.

The fact is that athleticism, skill, and technique can make up for a lack of size. However, when you're giving up 60-70 pounds in size its going to take a lot of those attributes to make up that difference, and that's asking a lot. Did you see OSU run over us last year? They had > 200 yards rushing. The only other game last year that they even came close to matching that total was against Indiana. The reason? We are undersized on the front line of our defense.

That is a coaching philosophy by our coaching staff, I realize. They want smaller, quicker players up front. That's fine, but if they want to eventually start beating the bigger schools we're going to have to start getting some bigger, quicker players as well. OSU's run game was anemic last year, yet they dominated us on the ground. Not through skill or talent, but merely by size.

I'm with you that size is overrated by many people, but that doesn't mean that its meaningless either.

I never said size was meaningless. My contention has been that it is ridiculous to say a player can't get the job done simply because he doesn't fit some statistical profile. A 260lb kid is perfectly capable of playing DT if he has the quickness and athleticism to overcome the lack of size. It has been proven at this very university.

Let's give Williams a chance before we say he can't do it...

I'm not saying anything about Williams personally. But I don't think I've ever seen a 260lb DT play the run well. That includes Hicks. For the past few years the games we've lost are because our DL got dominated. OSU & Miami(OH) last year dominated our DL. UT, NIU, and USF 2 years ago dominated our DL. Yes, against the lesser teams a smallish DT can get the job done, but it has been consistent over the past couple years that against the best competition we play our DL can get dominated by a quality OL.

My contention is that NO 260 pounder can have the quickness & athleticism to overcome the lack of size against top OL guys. Like it or not, alot of those 300+ pounders are pretty damn quick & athletic in their own right. I'm not asking us for some fat slobs out there, but there are 290-300 pound athletic guys in college football. It sure would be nice if some of them played on our DL.
