I'm sorry man, I know you're upset and yes, it was a poorly officiated game - one of the worst I've seen. I've been a high school referee for 5 years and the differences between high school and college rules/mechanics are minimal so I could go through that game and point out every mistake they made. I've also been saying for 3 years how that crew of officials (they're always together when they referee) is one of the worst crews I've seen. However, regardless of how the game is officiated, you should not disrespect the officials. In my 5 years, I have been screamed at by coaches, players, and fans. I ignore most of it; however, I have never let profanity get by. You should not let profanity get by. It degrades the officials, the person(s) who say it, and the school they represent. I have only given one T in 5 years of officiating and that was for the same reason that Coach Miller was given the T (in that game I was also called a racist and I ejected that fan).
I'm upset too that we lost. Nobody ever wants to see their team lose. Were there bad calls - yes there always will be. It's called human error. I've made plenty of bad calls in my time. Even with the bad calls, you cannot blame the loss entirely on the referees.
However, even with all of that, I look at the bright side of things - we had an amazing season in what was a "rebuilding year." I look forward to next year where I can watch and root for our team in what will be another amazing season. Bickering and being sore about the game after the fact will change nothing - use your energy in a positive light and show your support for the team.

I completely agree that Curt deserved the T. You can't say that and get away with it. At the same time, I can't say I have any problem with him saying it either though. The way emotions were going in that moment, I think it's completely understandable. So, I don't blame him for saying it, and neither do I blame the referee for subsequently giving him the T for saying it.

There are very few things that are worse than the BS chant. It is classless. I don't give a s*** what you think of the call or the officials, there is no need for that. There are children at these games. That is not something that they need to hear. If you want to yell at a ref and tell them how bad they are, keep it clean. I have been known to let a few choice words out a time or two, but there is a proper time and place for it. I won't let my players cuss on the floor in an audible manner, and I sure as heck don't want to the fans to do it. I have had my share of warnings from officials, and been given a couple of technicals. BUT, it has never been because I have cussed. If Curt used the F word, I will bet you that he would say it is really not right. You can tell them a lot of things, and tell them how stupid they are in a lot of different ways, but cussing has been a point of emphasis for the last four to five years as a sure fire T. Anyone that says "they deserved it" as justification for being classless has some serious growing up to do.

DustinXtreme wrote:last night the refs were horrible and i was the one of the people that started the bull***t chant last night and the refs deserved it too!
then the refs were dumb enough to call a technical on curt!
Are most officials biased against a mid major school it sure seemed that way last night and i don't know if any body else noticed but that lady official kept on going over to the IU coach that seemed a little odd don't you think
First - Coach Miller would be the first to say that Barb Smith is a highly respected and experienced official. She actually worked the Tennessee / Ball State game and they don't just hand out assignments like that to anyone. Referees are graded and rated all year long and you have to have a very high rating to get an NCAA Tourney gig. Also, I didn't see any Mid-Major / Big School bias in that game.

Second - On the "dumb enough to call a technical" comment. Coach Miller wanted that "T", Coach Miller was not going to stop yelling until he got that "T", the ref knew he wanted the "T" and she did everything she could to not give it to him, she knew exactly what a "T" would do to that crowd and I would bet that she could have predicted that the bull***t chant was coming. The "T" had the exact effect that Coach Miller wanted and it had the exact effect that the ref knew it would, She didn't have a choice.

Having said that, I love your passion for women's basketball DustinXtreme. Don't change and don't go anywhere.

I'd guess if it really did come after a T was given, he'd have gotten another. You don't get much more automatic than FU.

It's something he picked up from Dakich.

The last 5 minutes

Post by Class of 61 »

I was fortunate enough to be at BG for the leadership/volunteer conference and passed up the "Wine and Art" reception in favor of Falcon Basketball.... Obviously, the slow start put us in the hole, but...and we were COUNTING them, we missed a total of EIGHT shots from about the 5min. to 3min remaining points on the clock...many of those were inside looks that we've seen our girls make many times before... Curt mentioned the 3 pt. FG by IU's backup kid as the backbreaker, and he's right, but if only FOUR of those Eight shots went in, we wouldn't have needed to foul and watch IU sink FT's. Their PG gave Tracy fits (now I know why, at least in part, due to the ankle problem), but she also scored 16, mostly at critical times as well as being credited with 4 assts. (thought she had more frankly)

Anyway, this "old alum" still enjoyed the game, the atmosphere, and seeing our ladies for the last time this year...even got a hug from Lauren after the game...made my wife jealous!

Just FYI: To me, it looked like Coach Miller said "F-you" to the official after the T was given. Did he actually say that? I'm not sure, but it looked that way.

As was said earlier, he was clearly begging for a T, but he certainly had reason to be upset with the officials for the situation. The female ref clearly stared Niki down as she walked by her and allowed the play to continue.
