(Updated 1:30pm) The departure of players from Bowling Green’s hockey program continues.
Sophomore forwards David Solway and Patrick Tiesling, and freshman defenseman Nick Bailen have asked for an been granted their releases from the program, Falcon coach Scott Paluch said today.
The three are eligible to transfer, but Paluch said they would not be allowed to transfer to another school in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Four Falcons have left the program in the last two days.

Wow. Talk about a huge blow to the team and the program. We just lost 3 of our top players for next year within a couple of days.

I wouldn't be so quick to lump the Solway move into the "mass exodus" file, since it looks like he signed a pretty solid pro deal, but the other two definitely are a curiosity.

well crap...no doubt in my mind this has to deal with the "jeopardy" of the program, but i can't think of a worse thing to happen to our team. devastating

This is the most depressing news yet.

Looks like we're a lock for last place again next year. Any way we can convince the CCHA to hold an entry draft?

I doubt even a new coach can save this program from the depths of the CCHA next season now

I am not in their shoes, but I really do NOT understand the logic in their decision based on the fact that they all lose on year of eligibility by transferring, but if the program folds, they can go anywhere and play without losing any eligibility. Something does not fit. Could someone that is close to the situation shed some more light on this? Is the program shutting down next year? It just seems that the program is gaining some steam. I am very disappointed to see this happen at this time. Not good for the school and not good for their teammates and not good for the recruits.

OUCH! This sucks the biggest of big ones.

Spectator, it may help to you to understand their decisions to remember that they (Solway, Bailen and Teisling) don't actually LOSE a year's eligibility by transfering, they just have to SIT out a year of college hockey, then their eligibility picks up where it left off here. Solway and Teisling would be JUNIORS and Bailen would be a Sophomore AFTER sitting a year. Bailen won't turn 21 till Dec 2010, so I believe he could return to Juniors while he sits out his NCAA waiting period.

This is absolutely a bummer for the team, and the program. However, I don't blame these guys for making the decision that they did. There are numerous factors that come into play.

Sexton, Solway, and Bailen all had solid seasons, this past year. Sexton signed an NHL/AHL 2 year, 2-way contract, so his departure is obvious. Solway and Bailen wouldn't want to take the chance of having a poor season, or getting injured, next year, and lose the interest of potential transfer schools. I am sure there are a number of schools that are interested in both of these guys at this point in time. They'll spend next season as practice players, and will be able to develop their skills under a coaching staff that develops players. Scott Paluch's attention to develping players, after they join the program, isn't exactly superb.

Weather they say it or not, I am sure that Paluch being their coach for another year was a factor in their decision.

It is very likely that a new coach will be joining the program after next season (one could only hope). In this case, players do not get to pick the coach that they want to play under. They take the chance of having a new coach come in that they do not mesh well with. The new coach will be looking to shake things up, and this could have an impact on their roles on the team. New coaches typically like to play their own recruits.

Just my thoughts...

I think the administration is getting just what they wanted in the first place!
The way they have handled this thing, I don't think you could expect anything else.

Why don't they just fire Paluch already.......

They are not going to be able to get anything positive going until he is gone. At this rate we will have club players dressing for us next year......what a freakin' circus. I know from first hand conversation with a few players from the last couple of years that the vast majority of the current players hate playing for him and think his game planning is a joke. If they let him coach through next year it might be too late to save the program. Pooch might single handily kill it.......either that or flat run out of players willing to suit up for him.

This can't be good for the recruits that have committed to BGSU. I mis-understood the consequences of transferring to another shcool. I was under the impression that transfers lose a year of play. I guess the other factor is that after sophmore year credits will not transfer. I would think that Bailen would stay regardless, since he was such a big time player as a freshman and he would be able to transfer all of his credits after next year as well. Maybe the lack of confidence in the coach is factoring into all of the transfers too.

I hope the recruits are looking at this as a challenge and an opportunity to help the remaining team rebuild the program.

Players like Page have got to be very upset with the current situation.

Since Sexton went pro, it's not a surpise Solway decided to move on as well. Bailen was a bright spot in a dark season, really sad to see such a great guy, awesome d-man, and a leader on the team leave so early. I expected and hoped he'd stay till Jr. year. pat is a hardworking gritty player and although he doesn't have sexton-like numbers, he was a good checking forward and really good grinding out some key plays!

Wow, this is sad...

I really don't follow our hockey program nearly as much as I do BG football, basketball and baseball, but reading that "eight players have left the program since November" .....wow......

What do you expect these latest four to do? Sexton has a chance to make some money which is great for him, my guess is that he probably wouldn't have gotten a much better deal had he stayed.
As for the other guys: Solway can get a scholarship elsewhere and still have two good years left. Bailen can go back to junior for a year and then transfer, he'll have three years left. Teisling I'm not real sure where he is going to end up, I can't see another team offering him any money to transfer in. Obviously, from Solway's statements in the article, there hasn't been anything positive relayed to them as far as having a team after next year.
I think anyone who has more than one year of eligibility left and has an opportunity to play elsewhere will go. I don't think it has as much to do with the coach as it does the overall outlook of the program.
