That's a pretty big distinction there. We've always been under the assumption/news that the MAC has shuffled us around and taken away our contracted games with Boise St. and that we've just been willing participants.Spot50B wrote:The MAC (or Bowling Green, however you care to look at it) wanted out of the two home games that BGSU had under contract with Boise.
Boise State next year?

My point was that technically all contracts are between two schools. The MAC can't have a contract with Boise State. At the same time, I recognize that you guys got seriously hosed on this deal and I was trying to point this out. The MAC is the only conference I have ever seen that really can dictate schedules of its member teams-- though I suspect that this has a lot to do with your conference's contract with ESPN.TG1996 wrote:That's a pretty big distinction there. I should have also mentioned that Miami still gets to play their games with Kentucky and Northwestern and Toledo still gets a "home" game w/tOSU (as well as Colorado). You guys have to play us 3 for 1 and as far as I know, you got nothing (no home games or neurtral site games) for this "sacrifice."
That's exactly our beef. We bent over once for the conference and now have done it at least one more time with nothing to show. While the schools who don't know how to schedule are being rewarded on top of their incompetence, we're still taking the shaft.Spot50B wrote:You guys have to play us 3 for 1 and as far as I know, you got nothing (no home games or neurtral site games) for this "sacrifice."
This is one thing I really hope changes with the new commissioner. Aside from the ESPN Regional angle (which isn't REALLY ESPN at all), even the ESPN deal stinks like bad cheese.

No question about that. This MUST be the end of this crap.TG1996 wrote:That's exactly our beef. We bent over once for the conference and now have done it at least one more time with nothing to show. Thanks for the thoughts, Spot50B...looking forward to seeing Boise State in person this fall. I have a ton of respect for your program and fan base.
Good luck this fall as well...except for one game.

In the latest "Ask the AD" with GC and Dave Horger, Christopher said the return trip to Boise in 2012 is no longer.
Unfortunately, he also said we may be back in the game of finding "guarantee games" instead of looking for 6 home games in the future, due to budgeting.

Well-- if this is the case (and BSU's AD has NOT said anything about this), I can only assume that a different MAC team will be coming to Boise for a one and done. For sake of fairness, it should be Miami, but I sure hope not.TG1996 wrote:In the latest "Ask the AD" with GC and Dave Horger, Christopher said the return trip to Boise in 2012 is no longer.
You guys also had the one and done with Wyoming to deal with. As much as I'd love to see the Falcons in Boise again, I think that it is fair that you don't have to make the trip.
I like BG playing Boise St. from a football standpoint, but am VERY glad if we've evened out the travel part of the series. The AD said we'll host Wyoming in 2013 or '14 most likely.Spot50B wrote:Well-- if this is the case (and BSU's AD has NOT said anything about this), I can only assume that a different MAC team will be coming to Boise for a one and done. And yeah, Miami(OH) should have to do something for starting the mess. Buying us a new ice arena should be a good start.

I was able to confirm from the Boise State side that the 2012 game will be Boise State vs. "Bowling Green or another MAC school." Boise State still has the contract with Bowling Green (see why I said "Bowling Green or the MAC, however you want to look at it!"), but they are willing to accept any other MAC team as a substitute. The MAC must have told your AD that he won't have to play in Boise-- hope he makes sure that the MAC sticks to the agreement.
As for Wyoming-- I hope you are able to complete the home and home with them, but I would be surprised if they did not require some sort of compensation (i.e. another home game) in order to agree to the schedule change. As long as that compensation involves a school besides BGSU, you guys should come out okay.

I don't like some of the things GC had to say but respect him for not sugar coating anything. "Guarantee games"....hmmm. GC did say those games will probably be more regional and the team wouldn't be taking as many plane rides. But that goes for many teams across the country.TG1996 wrote:In the latest "Ask the AD" with GC and Dave Horger, Christopher said the return trip to Boise in 2012 is no longer.

I may be in the minority but I actually prefer pursuing guarantee games. I love home games (who doesn't?), but we cannot get the type of schedule I like to see on a year to year basis by insisting on 6 home games. Doing so will ensure too many years of playing poor overall schedules.Falconfreak90 wrote:I don't like some of the things GC had to say but respect him for not sugar coating anything. Guarantee games give us a chance to balance not only the football budget, but hopefully the Athletic Department budget as a whole. More importantly they give our football program a chance to vault itself onto the national stage. This program has gotten national attention only a couple times that I can remember, and the most prominent of them was because of guarantee games. We took two guarantee games in one year...came out of West Lafayette with a win and out of Columbus with a close, respectable loss.
Guarantee games have a much better chance of furthering our program toward it's ultimate goal, IMO (which our new coach has clearly stated is a BCS bowl). I'm especially thrilled to hear that they want these guarantee games to be more regional...that means games that we can all drive to and enjoy. All the better!
Another thought, I wonder if playing 6 home games will also make us struggle to get to the 15k average the NCAA wants to see. Something tells me it will be a lot more difficult for us to maintain that average with a 6 game home schedule than 5. Perhaps not this year, with Toledo at home, but if we played 6 each year I think we might see that become an issue.

Home and Home with Boise, Minnesota, Wyoming, and the likes should allow us to average 15,000 in my opinion. The financial problem seems to be, from my viewpoint, is that you can't make enough from one or two 25,000 seat sellout (est. $250,000) at the Doyt to cover the season's gameday expenses. I believe the guarentees are at least $200,000 and travel expenses with hotel and food for the team is less than gameday expenses in BG.
I have seen the big names - Missouri and Navy - come to BG with expectations of sellouts and bring crowds that did not even come close to selling out the stadium. So even with Boise, Minnesota, Wyoming or even Purdue I would suggests that a guaranteed sellout is not a safe bet but Michigan and Ohio State guarenteed contracts are fairly safe.

Just so I understand, are you saying that a 25,000 seat sellout only nets $250,000? I'm assuming that you are counting expenses here but this seems awfully low (maybe this is an average of all games or something). Even if ticket prices only averaged $20, that would be half a million bucks-- and that doesn't count concessions. Obviously, there would be expenses incurred but...?FalconTurf wrote:Home and Home with Boise, Minnesota, Wyoming, and the likes should allow us to average 15,000 in my opinion. I know that this revenue may not be able to compete with guarantee game amounts of $750k or higher but if you can bring in a team that would sell out (or come close), it has the potential to be a good payday, right?
Our highest pricest seat is $18, not counting loges or stadium club and students get in "free" with a student ID. I would guess a sellout of 25,000 would be in the vicinity of 15,000-18,000 paying customers at an average ticket price of $12-$14. If you take those top figures, our gate would be in the vicinity of $250,000 not counting concessions and parking.
