I honestly do not believe this is true. These players were all recruited to play at other schools and they CHOSE to play for the Falcons. Many of these players really love this town, this school and their team. This whole situation has not been handled well and their frustration has to be a million times what ours is. As unfortunate as it is, it's not surprising what has happened recently.ziggy z wrote:Most of these guys have just considered themselves hockey players and could care less where they are playing. "BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I've never spoken to the guy. But, actions speak louder than words. The actions of the Athletic Department, which he is in charge of, have done nothing in support of the hockey program. Did the department put any money into the new boards at the rink? Or did that come out of the Ice Arena budget, which is part of Rec Sports? Lights, Sebo, FieldTurf, Stroh, elimination of "Team" golf outings...Show me the support. Don't tell me "he saids," show me.murphdogg wrote: I couldn't disagree more. In talking with GC, he seems very sincere about trying to keep Falcon hockey intact. During tough financial times, administrators have to consider everything, and frankly, I feel as though Christopher was one of the people who saved the hockey program from the chopping block

You can make the same lack of administrative support about just about EVERY President and Athletic Director BGSU has had for the last 30 years or longer!

The thing that has bugged me the most about the whole situation is the lack of desire Scott Paluch has shown. And the people that have still been supporting him are really starting to piss me off! How come Paluch hasn't been part of any Save The Falcon groups, or how come he hasn't been pedaling the streets for more hockey supporters. People talk about him being "one of our own." Well Pooch played for the team in an era when a large amount of Falcons went on to play in the NHL. Why hasn't Pooch called those guys and got them to be a part if the action plan. I'll tell you why, because even when Pooch played here, his teammates didn't even like him. this is a guy who has had 7 years to change the program around, and the team is still continuously at the bottom of the CCHA. If he cared so much about the program, and bled orange, why is it that when the program is in jeopardy, he is nowhere to be found.
The guy is a bad coach, and a fake. Good luck getting supporters of the program until he is gone.

Re: a thought!
On one hand I can understand feeling odd about going out and pushing publicly for the program after you've failed to accomplish anything in 7 years. That could be an issue. It isn't an excuse, there are perfectly good ways he should be out there being heard in public, and I will say he continues to be invisible right now. Maybe that is for the best during the last year.jontends wrote:The guy is a bad coach, and a fake. Good luck getting supporters of the program until he is gone.
But again, I continue not to see the point in dwelling on his last year as coach when there are other issues in play. I think he is gone after this year regardless, and I hope like heck his supporters don't attempt a blitzkrieg to save him after laying low this year.
I look at all of this in the context of starting over. Because for all intensive purposes, BGSU is starting a new hockey program. This is akin to the Cleveland Browns leaving and coming back, only I pray we don't see the same results.

I'm not saying that Pooch should keep his job, because obviously the wins just are not there. But take a look at some of the coaches that have been through here the last twenty years that have had a tough time getting it done.
Jerry York- There were a lot of people that wanted him gone before he left for BC. His last four years at BG he was 61-82-9. That wasn't good enough and people wanted him gone. All he has done is shown that he is one of the best coaches ever to coach college hockey.
Buddy Powers- Had five solid seasons at RPI going 94-52-13. Comes to BG has two good seasons then can't keep it going.
Scott Paluch- Associate Head Coach at BC. Went to 4 straight Frozen Fours. Known around the country as a top recruiter and an up and coming head coaching prospect. Never really got it going here, had a tough time finding a solid goalie after Sigalet left.
Assistants just in the last few years:
Ron Fogarty- According to former players that post on this site he is a moron. Well, he has lost about 5 games in two years. I know it isn't Division I but obviously he has a little idea of what he is doing.
Todd Reirden- Goes from assistant coach at BGSU to head coach in the American League and will probably be an assistant in the NHL next season.
We had a decent season with him here last year, but that was more about Eno playing well in goal, than him coaching the team.
Kevin Patrick- Started the rebuilding process here, now enjoying a much better gig at Wisconsin.
Danton Cole- Head Coach in the American League. Was very successful for the time he was there. Comes here to be an assistant coach and we finish in dead last.
Dennis Williams- Took a DIII team that couldn't win a game four years ago and this year they won the National Title with all the players he brought in. Once again, the players here don't like him because he is tough.
I guess what I am saying is that like many others have said. It isn't just a coaching problem. It is a lack of talent problem. Miami is in the National Title game tommorrow because they had a commitment from the University to be good in hockey. We can hire a new coach and it may spark a brief turnaround similar to Notre Dame or Northeastern, but to consistently win you have to make upgrades to your program. Upgrades that certainly do not seem to be in the near future for BGSU.

My brother ran into some of the guys after the alumni game Satuday, and the general consensus was that they like Pooch and that they believe he gets a bad rap in town. They could just be defending him because he recruited them, but it is what it is. A lot of them also felt that people don't really care that much about the program, except until recently when it was considered to be cut.
Sexton left because of a great opportunity. He was Ducks property to begin with, so to get a contract offered by the team that drafted him speaks volumes. He was thrilled.
I can't speak for the other guys. I would assume part of it has to do with the outlook of the program not being good, and perhaps some of the guys felt that the team coming into this year just wouldn't be able to compete.
Many players commented on how BGSU is the laughing stock of college hockey. Prospective recruits have laughed at the facilities compared to other programs, and they believe this is the biggest downfall to why the program has fallen to where it is now.
Either way, the program needs some assurance it'll be around in the foreseeable future. It's not going to survive if there's a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the program after every season, players aren't going to commit and they're going to leave.

The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
The program is a write-off right now. If it seems like people are only caring now, because of the crisis, the player is right. Because people wrote off the coach and team as viable some time ago. Folks would turn-out if the product improved. However, with the program at risk, folks now have another reason to get motivated and show, or at least buy tickets, spend money, and organize.
The basic truth is that there will be no over-night rebound. Facilities are going to take several years to upgrade. The coach has another year. The next coach will need the year or two afterwards to set things on a course to improve. It will be three to five years before the mix of facility renovations, new staff, and improving players produce the results the public is looking for.
The community is only coming out because the program is at risk. They had already written off the staff and team until something changed. I'm sorry the kid has had to play here during dark times, but that was the way of it. Folks coming out now, myself included, aren't doing it because we think he or his coach are going to magically turn it around next year.
It is an embarrassment that BGSU allowed things to get to this point. And the only thing that will make it right will be an equally dramatic gesture to turn everything around. Anything less and the community will turn its back and walk away permanently.

Well, if the players feel this way, then I guess I no longer need to be thinking about purchasing season tickets or making a donation for renovation of the ice arena. More money to Methodist University.ziggy z wrote:He has never really inspired any pride or commitment among his players to be a Falcon. I think the point he is getting at was more that the coaching staff hasn't done much to inspire him. It isn't a comment about BGSU as much as a sign of no leadership from the coaching staff.
