What really happened to Kent State Hockey?????

Post by It's the Journey... »

I have also posted this at savebghockey. We have danced around this for over a month now. It keeps coming up that BG should be worried about keeping hockey because Dr. Cartwright was President when Kent State cut its program. Does anyone have ANY information on why the program was cut? I know Title IX issues were officially cited, but were there more? I seem to remember repeated issues of hazing being mentioned. If anyone has information lets get it out in the open here. We are asking the University to look at all the facts concerning BG Hockey. We should do the same when judging the administrators making the decisions.

ASk Dr, Cartwright. She is very forthcoming on why she did what she did.
It should come from her and only from her. Make an appointment.

I would LOVE to do that but I do not get back to BG very often. Living 4 hours away and having a 1 year old keeps me very occupied. I strongly believe this is something that must come out or these baseless and stupid rumors will continue and will delay the stabilization on the athletic department and all of its programs. It may not be the popular view to give President Cartwright the benefit of the doubt, but it is the RIGHT thing to do!

But did you really expect them to put up the following?

"In 1988 members of the hockey team did something totally stupid and the team was disbanded for a couple of years because we acted like complete idiots."

I remember the team being disbanded in the late 80's/early 90's for some illegal activity. With less than 14 years of being a varsity sport, the history for the program was not the same as it is for BGSU Hockey.

I guess I'm asking for newspaper articles and online references. I'm not finding anything but I know it's out there. I really don't care where it leads just as long as it is out.

Does anybody know Quinn Fair well enough to ask him what happened? Since he was at Kent at the time the program was killed and transferred to BG afterwards he should have some insight into what really went down.

Here's the thing that confuses me. The only hazing incident that I can find articles on happened in 1988 and the program had their entire 88-89 season cancelled. This was four years before they were members they members of the CCHA and six years before the program was killed. I don't think I would have paid attention to what was going on at a non-DI program in 88 but I do seem to remember there being issues of hazing while they were in the CCHA. They were only in the CCHA for two years (92-94). I haven't looked real hard yet but I can't find anything about problems during these last two years of the program. So, I'm not sure if my memory is faulty or if there were just rumors in 94 that didn't get officially reported somewhere. On the gripping hand, maybe the 88 incident got brought back up when they killed the program in 94.

That was for a hazing incident. It was also a different president. Here's a link to an article about it.

Basically they were suspended from play for a year as a result.

Wasn't there a second hazing incident in early 1994 which added to the killing of the program?

I seem to remember there being something about that.

That's what I thought, too, but I couldn't find anything online about it.
