Camp Randall Hockey Classic

Post by murphdogg »

Last month, the Camp Randall Hockey Classic was confirmed. The game will be played between the CCHA powerhouse Michigan Wolverines and the 2006 National Champions and WCHA power Wisconsin Badgers. The game will be played outdoors at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin. It will likely break the current world record for highest attendance at a hockey game, currently 74,544 in the 2001 Cold War game between Michigan and Michigan State. Tickets are $25 and go on sale May 4th at 8:30 AM

I'm gonna try and make this game, mainly because I grew up in Madison, only a few miles from Camp Randall. Anyone else gonna go?

Michigan State commits to Michigan in outdoor hockey game at Big House; Red Wings don't expect to join spectacle

Denote correction:Michigan coach Red Berenson will turn 71 three days before the game at Michigan Stadium.

That the University of Michigan would invite Michigan State to play outdoor hockey at the Big House was a foregone conclusion.

The Spartans, after all, hosted Michigan in "The Cold War" at Spartan Stadium in 2001. That game, the first of its kind for college hockey, ended in a 3-3 tie and set a world record for outdoor hockey attendance - 74,544 fans.

On Wednesday, Michigan drew a commitment from Michigan State, its biggest hockey rival, to plan for a similar game at Michigan's football stadium, tentatively slated for Dec. 11, 2010, Mike Stevenson, Michigan's executive associate athletic director, said.

Michigan athletic director Bill Martin refused to comment and referred all questions to Stevenson.

"We have been talking about (Michigan State), and we just got a commitment from them (Wednesday)," Stevenson said. "The state needs something to look forward to and needs to hear some good news, and both schools feel good about this."

A game at Michigan Stadium, with a projected post-renovation capacity of about 108,000, must be approved by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, Stevenson said. It would be played on Saturday during Michigan's two-game regular-season homestand Dec. 10-11 against the Spartans in the 2010-11 season.

The Friday game would play at Yost Ice Arena, and Sunday would serve as a backup date in case of unfavorable weather Saturday, Stevenson said.

And while Stevenson told The Ann Arbor News and the Detroit News that the university is interested in inviting the NHL to participate, don't count on the Detroit Red Wings joining the spectacle.

Ken Holland, the Red Wings' general manager, said Tuesday he has not been contacted by the NHL, and he doesn't expect the league to want Detroit in an outdoor game anytime soon.

On Jan. 1, Detroit played the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field in the NHL Winter Classic, an outdoor format the league began in 2008. Holland doubted the NHL would allow Detroit to skate in Ann Arbor if the league intends to play outdoors on Jan. 1, 2010 and/or 2011. He surmised the NHL would head east for that game.

One thing that is certain on Michigan's side: It won't consider a doubleheader on Saturday.

"After talking to people involved in the game in Chicago, two games on the same day would be too much," Stevenson said. "I don't know if we could expect people to sit through 6 or 7 hours of hockey in that kind of weather."

Stevenson said Michigan considered no other opponents for the game, including the University of Wisconsin, whom the Wolverines agreed to face on the Badgers' football field, at Camp Randall Stadium, on Feb. 6, 2010.

That game, to be played on a Saturday in the 2009-10 season, could draw 80,000-plus fans, and it could be the first of four potential games on football fields for Michigan in the same year: The Detroit Lions' Ford Field will host the NCAA Frozen Four in April of 2010.

Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson and his players could not be reached for comment Wednesday. The team did not practice Wednesday.

But Berenson, who added a one-year extension to a three-year contract set to expire this season, said Tuesday he'd love to stay long enough to coach in the Big House. He has supported a game there since at least 2001.

"I mean, that's a great event," Berenson, in his 25th season, said.

The Michigan Stadium showcase would come three days after Berenson turns 71, and Stevenson said Tuesday the university would honor Berenson's career at that game.

"He has wanted to do this for some time, but we think now the timing is right," Stevenson said.
