THE Goal.. Video!! 1984 NCAA Championship

Post by ZiggyZoomba »

Special thanks to Doug Hashbarger for getting his old VHS tape fixed and sending me a copy of it!

The video of the goal is now, FINALLY, available for everyone to see!!

I'm not even a hockey fan, but this brought tears to my eyes! The goal is at about 1:18 of this video... then there's some local news coverage after the game coverage ends.

SO awesome!!!

Thanks for posting that, Grant! I've seen it a couple of times before, but I've never felt like I could see it enough. I am still stunned by how crisp the passing was with that team, and how good the fore check was. York collected so much talent for that team that it almost seems absurd.

I really think we should bring back the short glass, too. :D

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR POSTING THIS!!! We have a copy of the game and have relived it several times, but have never seen the news footage! We were at the arena when the team came back to town and then we went up to Mark's (or was it still Dino's?) afterwards and celebrated even more with the team!! ....man it was tough getting up for work the next day..... :-D .....but OH, WAS IT WORTH IT!!!! :supz:

THIS IS WHY FALCON HOCKEY NEEDS TO BE SAVED!!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Simply Awesome, about time we got a video of this up!
I am still shocked the University has not regularly released a dvd of the game for people and even other past game highlights.
Good stuff

Thanks for posting that Grant. I've never seen any video of the game. I had goosebumps the whole time I was watching it. What an amazing day in BGSU athletics history!

1st EVER for the CCHA?

Post by Class of 61 »

Guess I never thought of it before, but this was the FIRST Nat. Championship for the CCHA, much less our Falcons... I remember watching that game at home on TV...we didn't get much coverage in those days, so this made it even bigger.

This was amazing. The fact that I wasn't even alive yet made it more magical.

All i could think through the entire thing was, "Want."

I agree ... special thanks to Doug for getting that video You-Tubed. It was a whole different era then. I remember talk of WBGU sending a broadcast crew to Lake Placid, but I think there were too many financial issues (go figure). The feed from North Dakota had a Western hockey slant, but it was great none-the-less. VCR's hadn't been around all that long either. I had a friend taping the game (I was in the arena), and as things progressed it looked like the 4 hr. tape would run out. Toward the end of the game she stopped and started the recording a lot to save recording time during breaks in action. ESPN was only a few years old, and didn't have all that much material so they ran a truncated version quite a few times the week after. If I remember correctly, of the quality of the ESPN coverage was a bit better, but there was a lot "on to further action" cuts. Of course, there was no Dish or DirectTV either, so only folks in town who had cable could see the ESPN version. I remember talking to so many people who went to bed when Duluth went up 4-2 only to wake up in the morning to find that BG had made a comeback. For a quick look at the brackets and how tight the tournament really was check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_NCAA_ ... Tournament.

I remember watching the game with about seven others crowded around my roommate's small television. The game didn't end until around 11:30 or so. I also recorded it on cassette in my bedroom; had to run back and forth a few times to make sure that the tape didn't run out! "Kane waits...feeds Cavallini...backhander...score!!!" Since the final was played on Saturday between Winter and Spring semesters, it was replayed on a big screen on campus the following week (I don't remember where) so that those students who were away could watch it. Naturally, I sat through the whole thing again, everyone cheering the winning goal.

I think BG set a record that, under the present setup at least, will not be broken: a four-game losing streak during the playoffs. We lost to Lake Superior 7-6 in the second game of the total-goal series (won 13-10 on aggregate), then lost at the Joe to Western Michigan 4-3 in OT and Ohio State 3-2 in OT in the CCHA final four. After losing to Boston University 6-3 on Friday night, the Falcons finally won 5-1 in OT (had to go to OT because, once again, it was two-game, total-goals, and the teams were tied at 7-7 after regulation). The semifinal against Michigan State was the only game in the Final Four that did not go into OT that year.
