"Doc" Emrick Article in Toledo Blade
Good article about hockey announcer Mike Emrick in the Sunday Toledo Blade. As he and I were at BG at the same time, I'm sure that I heard him in his formative years over WBGU. Also, while at the Blade site check out the article "Northview Grad Has Eventful Year at Miami."

I kinda have to agree about Emrick, he's not my favorite broadcaster either. His voice gets pretty annoying after awhile. Either way, he's still probably the most well known hockey play-by-play guy in the US. The fact that he does all of the NBC games and was supposed to do the Winter Classic this year before he got sick speaks to how highly regarded he is.

I am surprised at the opinions of Emrick. I have always really, really enjoyed his calls. He has a very unique style, and I have always admired his quick ability to ad-lib.
I actually didn't know until now that he was a BG, guy, either.

Mike's delivery and style is awkward at best, however his job with the Devils is beyond excellent. He suffers a bit doing national games probably from his unfamiliarity with the players on the teams he doesn't cover. Other national broadcasters who don't have an affiliation with a team have an easier time getting to know numbers and how each player looks.
Overall, I think Mike does a decent job. He probably has the sharpest hockey mind out of all the broadcasters, so he has that going for him. It's always nice to see a BG alum being held in such high regard, having the chance to broadcast the Olympics would have to be any broadcasters dream.

Speaking of Emrick, I caught the 2nd and 3rd period of the Pens/Flyers game and wondered if he had made any mention of BG, seeing as he and Bylsma were both involved.
Anyone know?

Watched the Penguins-Flyers and first period of Ducks-Sharks last night on Versus. In between they shifted to a few minutes of bonus coverage of Devils-Hurricanes. The only mention I heard of college hockey all evening was Emrick's "a Clarkson product" and "out of Boston University" during the brief peek at the Devil's game. I guess that's why I like him.
I've always liked that about him, too. He knows where the guys played college hockey at, whether it's BU or Adrian, it seems. It wouldn't surprise me, then, if he's made a couple Bylsma/BG references.rally wrote:Watched the Penguins-Flyers and first period of Ducks-Sharks last night on Versus. Though they should have stuck with the Canes-Devils game a couple minutes longer. What a finish!

I haven't heard him make the reference yet. He did mention Ed "Boxcar" Hospodar, but not his being from BG. I mean being from the town of BG. I hated Hospodar when I was a kid, he was a cheap shot that ran and didn't fight. I think Clark Gillies might have been the reason.
Sorry off subject.
