It is my understanding that the MAC requires all of its member schools to field Division I teams in football, men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball. If we dropped our DI football program, we would be out of the MAC, which would devastate all the rest of our sports teams. It isn't gonna happen unless the whole conference goes DII

Unless you're Temple then you just use us for football.murphdogg wrote:It is my understanding that the MAC requires all of its member schools to field Division I teams in football, men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball. I seriously doubt BG drops down to DII. We would be one of the largest DII schools out there.
Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach PE.
I'm still not entirely sure what the deal is with Temple, but I believe they are not considered a "member school" but a "conference affiliate". From what I have gathered (read: read on Wikipedia), the MAC has 5 affiliate teams, Temple for football, Chicago State for tennis, Florida Atlantic and Hartwick College for soccer and Missouri State for field hockey. I could be wrong about this, but I think they don't have to meet the requirements because they compete in only 1 sport as a MAC affiliatedaspollak wrote:Unless you're Temple then you just use us for football.murphdogg wrote:It is my understanding that the MAC requires all of its member schools to field Division I teams in football, men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball. It doesn't mean that any of the options are being taken seriously, but they at least talk about them to give good reason why they are not options.
My guess at that conversation between any two people:
"How about we talk about dropping all sports to 1-AA? Just saying, it would save some money and keep the sports all intact."
"Are you stoned? Next topic."
"OK, at least we talked about it."
I also read an article that stated that things were discussed in pretty much this manner so that they could say it was discussed.

RISING COSTS
The cost of running our football team is continuing to strain the entire athletic dept. One way to slash these costs quickly is to re-think out of conference opponents. I thoroughly enjoyed going to places like Norman, OK and Madison, WI and Minneapolis to cheer on the Falcons. However, despite the paydays, BG, as well as other smaller travelling schools, lose money on these games because of the travel costs. It would be much wiser to stick to the larger D-1 program within a bus trip; Pitt (oh yeah, they'll want us back), Ohio St, Kentucky, Cincy, Northwestern, Michigan, Purdue.
It's been said that the out of town games are for exposure. How much exposre are we "really" getting from these games? Only seven returning letters winners are NOT from OH, IL, IN, MI, PA. Again these states represent car trips during recruiting. Are the budget busting games vs Oklahoma, Boise, Wyoming, etc worth 7 players?????? That is, is the so-called "exposure" from these games really worth it, or even a reality?!
The GMAC Bowl also ruins the overall bottom line. It would be much better to go to Toronto or Detroit. Of course, winning the damn league title would get us to Detroit quicker, as they'll want a team from the area.
Mich and Mich St are 2 Big Ten schools that are busing their hoops teams as much as possible to cut costs. If these huge universities are busing 15 hoopsters because of costs, why are we flying 80 football players all over the country, when comparable D-1 programs are close by?
I realize the league controls "some" of the schools' schedules in the league. However, both BG and the league office, at BG's insistence, should look toward closer OOC games as a way to quickly shave costs.

We DO NOT make money on these trips. How much do you think "we got" to go to Wyoming? Boise? Even Oklahoma. I assure you the paydays aren't what you think. Not everyone seats over 100k like Ohio St. and Penn St. That's why we should concentrate on these larger D-1 programs in the Midwest. Moreover, to maintain D-1 status, we "have" to sponsor a certain number male and female sports. All the non-rev sports draws futher on a plummeting bottom line. The reason the decision for D-II was even considered was so some of these sports could be dropped.
Wyoming and Oklahoma are hardly in the same category. If I remember correctly, Wyoming was originally a home and home, and Oklahoma was a one time deal with a BCS school. I don't remember what the guarantee was at Oklahoma, but I'm sure it was at a minimum of $400,000. Basically the only difference in playing a distant BCS team and a closer team is the cost of the flight, which is significant, but............we also do not make money on traveling to someplace like Western Kentucky, and not much on a home game with an average attendance of 15,000, and only about 10,000 or so are gate paying customers at an average of say $15 per person.
Anyone know what the average cost of a charter flight for 125 people? Some of the passengers also pay their own way on our charter flights also.
p.s. I agree with our Miami friend!

Listen boys, do your own research. The hallowed money game is a misnomer. The so-called payouts BG gets is quickly devoured by travel costs.
-Charter buses to the airport
-the flight
-Charter buses from the airport and to/from practices and game
-lodging/meals for 100+ for multiple days
-Do the math, this ain't rocket surgery
-Away ticket guarantees, that we eat because fewer fans make the trip
We lost money on our most recent GMAC trip. Anytime we fly somewhere, and if we spend more than one night in that location, our profits will be gone, or marginal, and not worth that trip. Why not stay closer to home, save on travel, let the fans (us) save on travel and see more OOC games.

The GMAC bowl isn't a good example...it's like citing a dog as an example of a fish...IIRC, the payout is lower and the expenses offset against it were prtetty high (shortfall in tickets sold vs the allotment)
Ask yourself this question...if going to places like Oklahoma and Boston College to collect an ass whoopin and a paycheck only nets you an ass whoopin...who in their right mind would even consider such a trip?
