Renovate or Rebuild University, Hanna & Mosely Halls?

Post by BGSU33 »

This article from the BG News discusses some of the many plans scheduled for campus construction beginning this summer. One area it touches on is the discussions considering whether to renovate or rebuild buildings such as University, Hanna & Mosely Halls. I believe I read somewhere a year or two ago it was decided when work was to be done on these buildings it would be more of an improvement/renovation and the exterior images of these historical buildings were going to be preserved and retained. But judging by the sounds of this new article, it may not be the train of thought any longer. Does anyone have any information or insight about what might be done with these buildings? Being as BGSU is a relatively “young” university (1910) in comparison to many others across the state and the entire country, I really, really hope an effort is made to retain the exterior look of these buildings as they are really some of just a few which showcases BGSU’s beginning and early years. I would hate to see these buildings, especially a landmark facility such as University Hall, changed into a modern looking structures.

Renovation is almost always more expensive on buildings especially when you have to bring them up to code. Its sad to see buildings knocked over, but the reality of the world that we live in today, is that costs typically dictate how we do things, and that Ohio has a low bid law on the books for public building projects. Ask the university how well the Union was constructed.
