I thought this story was over ...

Post by MarkL »

... but apparently not. Front page ESPN college football page, there's a story about an ex-UT football player linked to the point shaving investigation. Here's the link:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=4093573

Notable:
The release this week of the complaint, originally filed under seal last August, comes as federal authorities move to wrap up a more than two-year investigation of gambling tied to Toledo. Authorities have told ESPN.com that the federal probe is focused on 52-year-old Ghazi [Gary] Manni, the manager of a family-owned grocery in Detroit, as well as suburban Detroit real estate investor Mitchell Karam.
There may be a few more stories coming out soon, but it seems as though the investigation is moving away from UT and zeroing in on Gary. This will probably finally be over soon.

Point shaving is big any time. The ref in the NBA had the story played for months after the news came out

And, if you read at the end of the story, there are allusions to other players being involved and known. I suspect there are still going to be some UT angles to the story.

This is too bad. I like to beat UT on the field, but this is bad for our conference and has a tendency to reflect a little bit on all of our schools.

I don't think it reflects upon us at all and I think it's hilarious...this story is the gift that keeps giving....hours and hours of laughter, all of it directed at the mouth breathers to the north.

You gotta love the rockette logic too. Some of the posters on MACbbs are trying to justify the crime with "but they covered the spread" and "the guy committed no penalties" and blah blah blah. Like that matters.

Also, did anyone see that Coach Bran...I mean Coach Beckman has started a Rocket Football for Women 101 program?

So does this mean TJRocket won't be coming around anytime soon with his delusions that we want to be like TU?

Nah, I don't think the "Football for Women" program takes that long, he should be able to stop by afterwards.

I don't understand why there hasn't been more talk about Toledo being punished for this. Even if no athletes at the University now were involved, and even if the administration had no idea what was going on, a point shaving scandal still has to result in some kind of NCAA penatlies, right?

If the administration had no idea it was going on, that's bad news. "Lack of administrative control" is a nice phrase that the NCAA uses for saying a coach and/or AD should be fired. Once the case is over, charges are filed, and all that fun stuff, I'm guessing the NCAA is going to pass some serious sanctions on UT, the severity being dependent on how involved players were and how oblivious the coaching staff and athletic director had to have been. A ceremonial slap on the wrist is not likely, nor is a death penalty, but a big scholarship loss is a possibility.

There is no way they give UT the death penalty. After what it did to the SMU football program, they won't do it unless there are systemic, severe violations and they continue after the NCAA tells them to stop. Look at the Baylor basketball team. They committed some of the most egregious violations in college sports history and they got only a partial death penalty because the NCAA is so afraid of the damage it does to a program
