I really hate to see this, but I'm not surprised about Victoria. She had great potential but unfortunately got limited playing time. When she did get in, she seemed very nervous and not on top of her game. I can remember Coach Miller pulling her out after a slip up and seeing her face as she went to the bench...it really didn't look like she was having fun out there.

Alright, now the release has come out. Unfortunately, Niki's behavior didn't really change I guess from her time at Akron. If you remember correctly, I had told everyone that I talked to Coach Kest, and that Niki might not fit in as well as we would like. I was blasted for saying that, and I really thought I might have been wrong after she had made it through last year, but things finally caught up to her. I am not speculating, I know for a fact. And I am going to support Coach Miller on this decision, as Ms. McCoy did not live up to her end of the bargain to maintain her scholarship. I have learned that there are just some kids that don't learn from their mistakes. And sometimes it takes removing something that is most important to them to realize how well they had it. I really do wish the two young ladies all the luck in the world for the rest of their lives, but life has to go on, and this program will be strong with the group that Coach Miller has next year.

According to my calculations two of the players would not have been on scholarship next year, three if you count Eli. I agree with earlier comments, Victoria seemed tentative when she was on the court and I sense that she became less and less confident as the season progressed. The emergence of Tracy as an Honorable Mention All-American led to a lack of playing time this year and next year will be no better, probably worse, with Tamika becoming eligible. Before she knew it Victoria would find herself a Junior with very little game time experience, still playing behind Tracy. I'm sure Coach Miller genuinely cares about Victoria and because of that he was honest with her and, as has been reported, is doing everything he can to help her find the situation that is best for her (and he has a boatload of connections across the country). Under different circumstances she could have been a contributor by her senior year, much like Tene Lewis was a few years ago. I too wish her the best and believe she not only has the talent to be successful but she will be soon happier as well.
As for Niki....perhaps on another post.

I watched Victoria play some impressive minutes at the MAC Tourney in March. I thought she had a chance to develop into a serviceable backup point guard.
However, with her leaving, and with Murdaugh and Hooten leaving last year, Curt has to hear again the whispers about how he's handling African-American players. We all know that its no reflection on Curt and his staff, but perception can often become reality.
It awful hard to recruit African-American players when there are none on the roster and the ones you do recruit keep departing the program early.

I think these are each individual cases, rather than some sort of inherent problem or epidemic. I also think Carin Horne, Amber Flynn, Sakima Smith and Tene Lewis probably have good things to say about their time at BGSU. And, Tamika Nurse is on the roster, so it is not devoid of African-Americans (actually African-Canadians).

A basketball player is a basketball player, it doesn't matter what skin color they have. All Curt and the rest of the staff can do is go out and recruit the best talent. I don't know why the girls left last year, but this situation has everything to do with playing time. That is it. I will agree that players that haven't played WITH a lot of players from a different race find differences at first. But it usually is not with the coaching staff, it's with the other players. But everything works out 8/10 times. The players realize that they are all there to do the same thing, and aren't that different from each other. I have seen it. As far as with the coaching staff, if they thought it would be a problem, they wouldn't recruit them. The recruits meet the players before making the decision, and figure out by talking to the players what the coaching staff is really like. Their is no stigma, Curt will still recruit the best players that will help BG win, and it won't matter what skin color they have. What are they supposed to do, go out and recruit just african-americans for the next couple of years, so they can get some diversity? I really wish people wouldn't speculate on things, or try to make things out to be more than they really are.

I think several of these departures have been due to playing time. Hooten and McGowan simply didn't play very much- as far as they were concerned- and wanted to play more. I think McCall is another playing time and being closer to home situation. I don't see those situations as anything other than playing time.
The only transfer that was difficult to understand was Murdaugh. But young people make their own decisions and I am sure Murdaugh will be very successful in life.
McCoy obviously did not meet some program goals during her career at BG. Of course, we wish all of these women the best including McCoy.
Unfortunately, (though partly understandably), many players of all types simply believe they should play- early and often. Nearly every young women was a star on their HS team. And, on most teams, only about nine or ten players will be in a significant rotation. That is how it is in basketball. But student-athletes want to play and may not be willing to wait, work and improve. That can happen.
Tamika Nurse will provide a spark next year, I believe, so we have a good student athlete of color in the rotation/squad.
Go Falcons!

What I don't understand is why the university waited this long to announce that they were taking away McCoy's scholarship, if indeed this is over her DUI offense back in February. It just doesn't seem right that she be held in limbo for almost 3 months like this. If BGSU thought her transgression was severe enough to be worth a scholarship-strip, they should have done it immediately.
And if this is NOT over the DUI offense, then what could it be?
Oh yeah McGowan. She was so bad during the MAC tourney final, that her presence in the game might've cost us a trip to NCs. I never though Slagle's injury would have been so huge in the end. Good riddance.

As for Niki, I can tell you that it's not all about the alcohol offense, there are some other things that have led to this. If the staff wants to come out and tell people, that's fine. The school did not leave her hanging for 3 months. Not every decision needs to be made public. As far as McGowan is concerned, give me a break 24. She is a 19 year old kid, not every athlete adjusts in their first year to the college game. Think before you write something next time, "good riddance", really? I wish Ms. McGowan the best of luck wherever she ends up.
Why does it matter to you why they waited so long? Obviously by the last part of your post, you don't care about the women's basketball program so why ask questions. You look silly when you try to act like you're a hard ass and make these ridiculous comments that do nothing but slam the University, student athletes, and everything for that matter. I'd love to see Curt Miller foot stomp on your face.bgsufalcon24 wrote:What I don't understand is why the university waited this long to announce that they were taking away McCoy's scholarship, if indeed this is over her DUI offense back in February.
