Flip: Agreed. That was definitely a great day to be a Falcon.

I'm currently working on a list of the greatest (and worst) BG games in all sports from 2005-06 (when I got here) through 2008-09. That will be out soon, but I can say for sure that the best BG football games I've ever seen are:

2003 NIU (came before I knew I was going to be a falcon, but it was the 1st BG game I ever watched all the way through. Unfalconbelivable)
2005 Temple (the 70-7 game, that was a beautiful day)
2007 Akron (beating them after they STOLE 2 in a row from us was great)
2007 Toledo (reversed the slide against TOL and turned the I-75 rivalry back toward BG)
2008 Pittsburgh (our only top-25 win of my undergraduate time, shame the high point of the 08 season came during week 1)

The worst, were undoubtedly these:

2005 Akron (this game cost us a MAC Championship, moreso than the game against Toledo)
2007 Miami (ditto on costing us the MAC)
2007 Tulsa (I could only laugh at our ineptitude, that was a waste of $200 and 16 hours on a bus)
2008 Eastern Michigan (how in the hell?!)
2008 Buffalo (the most horrifying, terrible, horrible, dispicable meltdown in the history of BG football IMO, and yup, another MAC title down the crapper)
24. Quality provider of the truth, for better or for worse.

Re: Bg vs WVU

We fumbled opening kickoff, WVU recovered, ran a play for a TD...we threw a pick on our 3rd off. play, returned for a TD... We were down FOURTEEN Pts. inside of first 3 minutes of the game!

Can't remember final score, (Bad), but our "performance" was simply awful!
It was 62-14. It could have been worse if Nehlen wanted it to be. I was a freshman that year and my cousin went to WVU and I had to hear about it all year.

In 91, BG's only loss was to WVU, 24-17. I thought BG was going to win that game, but WVU was deeper and defense got tired.

94. CMU. Fat Punter. Getting blown out by a dozen TDs is never as heartbreaking as the ones that slip through your fingers.

It was especially disheartening after BG rallied from being down 21-0 (including the interception thrown to a wide-open defender) to take the lead. The defense stopped the Chips on offense, we're ready to get the ball back and put the finishing touches on the win, then...unbelievable horror! The beginning of the downfall of the Gary Blackney era. Before that play, BG seemed invincible in the MAC. Afterwards, another story.

Ah, you guys are all so young. Let me toss in a couple from awhile back.

I won't say worse but most heartbreaking ... 1969, UT 27 - BG 26. The wind had been howling through the south end all day as UT kicker Ken Crots look into it for a 37 yd. FG attempt with 2 sec. remaining. Then, as if he were kicking for Notre Dame or something, the wind suddenly died for the first time all afternoon and the kick wobbled over the crossbar by a foot. UT went on to the first of three consecutive undefeated seasons.

Best (or at least most unique) game ... 1972, BG 17 - #18 Purdue 14. I think this was the first year of freshmen eligible. BG frosh Don Taylor kicked a late second half FG that became the game winner. "College Football Scoreboard" on ABC was hosted by Dave Dials, and that was his lead story all afternoon. "A freshman who has yet to attend any classes at Bowling Green" .... "It didn't take long for the Freshmen Eligible Rule ...." etc.

I, too, sat with 33,000 others in the rain for the '83 BG-UT game. Outcome wasn't great, but atmosphere was electric. Didn't really experience another like it until the College GameDay bout with NIU in 2003. Fodder for another thread ... I know that TV runs the show, but the BG-UT rivalry took a major hit when it went to Thanksgiving weekend.

2004 at Toledo.

We were up 14-0 before I even got to my seat, but we still lost.

Also almost got thrown out of that game (or worse) thanks to my then-girlfriend deciding to pick a fight with a lady behind us. Made all the more terrifying by the fact that our seats that were "right near the BG section" (according to the ticket office) were actually four rows deep in the next section up - of UT fans. They didn't take kindly to an orange wig wearing BG fan sitting in front of them.

Pergrinner, I was at that game with a friend, sitting in front of a large group of UT fans, who felt the game was lost at halftime... We had a very NICE exchange of comments... I honestly said, I wouldn't count out anyone with 30 min. to play. Unfortunately, I proved to be a prophet... the wrong kind.

(BTW... I didn't have an orange wig on.)

A couple from UT came with friends from BG and I was sitting next to this older guy from BG-after BGs last score of the first half he turned to me and said "this is getting ugly-thought Gradkowsk was supposed to be good?" When we put it away in the third quarter I responded "Yep, ugly!" He grabbed his wife and stomped out leaving their friends behind.

Had a few less than kind words for Brandon and BGs QB before he left.

Fat Punter #1- program still hasn't recovered.
California Bowl when Coach bolted and we got creamed.
Chip Otten fumbling on the 1 yard line at home for go ahead vs. the Sprockets. (75?)
Losing the 1st half lead to the Sprockets up there and ending up losing.

Yikes, I have to stop....

BUT, I can also do best games.. that is another thread.

The Otten game was one of my faves. As he dove in to the endzone I looked up to the sky to seek answers as to how this could happen and there, outlined against the brilliant blue of a northwest Ohio afternoon was a football. And then MArvin Russell (or maybe Mike) jumped on it and the celebration began. Great to win one that way in BG. People forget that BG wouldn't have been in the game at all if not for OTten though. That little guy had a huge game up to that point. I almost felt sorry for him. ;-)

The game against Toledo that Otten fumbled in was in 1979. It was a long walk back to Rodgers after that one.
