Think of the taxes the govt could bring in by legalizing it. People will always want to get high...just like people will always want to get drunk.
Mike, (and BO too),
Amazingly enough, there are SOME people who don't care to get drunk...or high...as to smokes and booze doing "more" damage, could it be BECAUSE they ARE legal?
That's a good point. However, alcohol and nicotine are physically addictive. To my knowledge, weed isn't.

Exactly.
You know how golf has the "silly season" after the majors have been played?
We have the "Suspension/Leave the Program" season.
One joint is equivilent to 10 cigs in terms of damage to lungs. Why are we even talking about this. It is not legal for good reason, Ever been to Amsterdam ...... Talk about a city of stoners... A Spicoli on every corner. Pizza Mr Hand?
Is this a joke? It doesn't matter if some of you think marijuana SHOULD be legal -- IT ISN'T. I think I should be able to run bad drivers off the road. Guess what -- I can't -- it's illegal. If Chris Knight tested positive for weed yet again, he's gonna have to pay the consequences. Go advocate the legalization of weed on the free-for-all forum.

Yes, the practical reality is the weed is against the law and Knight might be in trouble if he's proven guilty. Forgive me. It's just that the complete, abject, hard core stupidity of the laws against weed (and their supporters) makes it hard for me to refrain from comment.

Absolutely. But there will always be those that do. If you don't, don't.
So are you saying the govt should outlaw booze and smokes? Good luck with that...it was tried with booze decades ago and we all know how well that went. Plus, the govt' will never outlaw booze and smokes due to all the taxes collected.

Mike,
No, I'm not advocating the 'prohibition' era again...just pointing out that your statement that people WANT to get drunk seemed a bit over the top to me. And yes, I DO think that smoking and drinking cause more problems than pot, primarily because they ARE legal and pot isn't. Everything I've read about marijuana today is that it's 3-10 times as potent as it was in the 80's..... that alone, would scare the heck out of me...as to legalization.

'61, that could be an argument for legalization. When someone buys alcohol, he has a choice of proof and makes his decision thusly.
If pot were legalized, don't think for a minute that RJ Reynolds and Phillip Morris wouldn't be rolling out their own lines of "Acapulco Gold" and "Panama Red." A buyer could be reasonably assured that the product he was buying was of a certain potency that he desires at that price-point.
I'm not sure that someone buying on a street corner has that same knowledge today.
There is not a single documented case in the medical literature of a person dying as a direct result of marijuana. I understand that you can die as a result of stupid things you might do while under the influence of the drug (like drive), but cannabis itself is completely nonlethal. This is in contrast to alcohol or tobacco, both of which can kill purely through consumption. I challenge anyone to find a documented case of death by cannabis poisoning.
Also, marijuana is the primary source of revenue for the Latin American drug cartels. If you turn that black market into a regulated free market (like alcohol or tobacco), you will go a long way towards putting the cartels out of business. Remember, black markets occur when a desired product is put out of reach by legal restrictions. The black market, unable to resolve conflicts through legal means like the police or the legal system, resort to violence as a method to resolve disputes. Eliminate the black market, and you eliminate the violence.
But I digress. If anyone wants to have a more in-depth conversation on this, I'm open to starting a new thread in the free-for-all area.
Sweet. So this has turned into a conversation about the legality of the drug that a player of ours allegedly smoked. Great. I hope we have this same conversation the next time a BGSU athlete is caught screwing a prostitute bareback. Then we can discuss the merits of hittin' whores without rubbers. That should be fun stuff.
Do any of you realize how friggin' ridiculous you sound?
