Stimmel's Market: Closed

Post by billchase2 »

I received a text from a friend in BG the other day saying that Stimmel's Market is closing on the 24th. Does anyone have more info on this? Apparently, there's a chance of them reopening... but that's all I've heard.

That would freaking suck!!! That place has the best cookies in the world and their beer selection was amazing! I remember the first time I went in there. I got a dozen chocolate chip cookies and a 6 pack of Old Speckled Hen. That was a great night! Haha.

Their Wine selection is better than their beer! That is rough to hear...it's happening all over America though.

I heard this today, and that royally sucks. A great deli with top notch sandwiches. A fabulous bakery, it was about the only place I'd ever buy doughnuts. Then they topped it all off with the best beer & wine selection in BG by FAR.

I hope they do re-open, because this just sucks. I stopped there for doughnuts before just about every tailgate...I'm gonna miss that :(

I definitely agree. They had some of the best sandwiches in town and easily the best beer & wine selection, as you stated.

I may swing down to BG sometime this weekend. If I do, I'll stop by and see if I can get more info (and pick up a few sandwiches since it may be my last opportunity).

I sent them a message on their website to see if I can find out any other info. I'll be sure to post any responses I get.

Before losing my job I frequented Stimmel's no less than four days a week. I loaded up on their sandwiches, sweets, beer, wine, deli salads, whatever. Lost my job and wisely began avoiding Stimmel's in favor of more traditional grocery stores. A few months later they decide to close their doors. Blame me, folks. Blame me.

I feel like it was the best kept secret in BG, and unfortunately, that might have been one of their problems.

I think the downfall of Stimmel's is/was it's distance from the center of town (I'm still hoping this is all a vicious rumor). It is/was a fantastic store, and their beer/wine/cheese selection was/is one of the greatest that I have ever seen. Still, I think it was located too far West of town to be wholly successful, as it should have been. I don't recall them advertising themselves all that well, either - though that could have changed since I left BG.

Sadly, BG is seemingly losing another fine institution. What was the name of that restaurant that had the wine room in the lobby of the old hotel on Main? I can't remember the name, but that was another great place. Truthfully, if Bowling Green had a bigger population, these great places would probably last longer.

Unfortunately, half of it's population is gone for the entire summer. And even when the population is at it's peak during the school year, some people just don't know about these wonderful little places that BG has to offer!

UPDATE: I was in BG last night through this afternoon and drove past Stimmel's. There were signs up saying that the bakery was open and all the lights were on inside. Does anyone know anything about that? I was just heading out of town so I didn't stop, but I'm rather curious.

The bakery is open. Just went in for some glazed doughnuts today. hopefully other parts of the market will re-open also but it looks like the bakery is going to be it for a long time.
