1) The old BG City League Pee Wee park was a dismal facility that had more teams then they could handle.

2) The new Carter Park facility... ok... its 20 years old now... but they have had a severe decline in teams over the last 10 years despite the quality of facility.

Do you need nice facilities? Sure. Is there a direct correlation between nice facilities and usage by the public? Only partially when you get the initial boost. In reality what we have seen is that kids have been specialized in sports, because if they fail to do so, they'll never make the travel teams which help you become very very good.

Today there are just 5 Junior level teams... 20 years ago there were two divisions and 16 teams.
Times do change, but Hockey is a distinctly more logistically intensive sport. It costs more to keep the kids equipped. Travel is both greater and more expensive. Little-league kids dress at home, go home. The hockey kids need facilities on-site. Parents who are going to commit to the sport with their kids are leaving for places that more fully support them, and provide their kids with the best facilities. Presently BGSU's Ice Arena simply isn't among any of the top places. Plus, the lower quality of the venue cuts into the numbers of people who would play locally in the more travel-limited groups. In for a penny, in for a pound. Do you really want to get the kids up at 4:30 a.m. for practice at the BGSU facility? Not likely.

Baseball, which I played as a kid, could have been played on a grass lot with pillows as bases. No lie, I get what your saying, but don't feel it compares.

I don't think parents ever want to get kids up at 4:30 in the morning to go to a hockey practice. But thats just one of the costs of playing hockey. The ice quality at BG has always been good, and beyond that what are you looking for? Renovated locker rooms?

this is not to say I am not for the renovation or replacement of the arena. I am more of the lines looking for the wants vs. needs list.

Do we need plush back chairs for parents? or do we need locker rooms for teams?

I believe the biggest asset in that regards is the second sheet that has been discussed. A second sheet of ice solves many scheduling problems, allows 2 teams to practice at the same time, allows for invitational tournaments, etc.

I've been to 5:00 AM practices....they aren't fun.

It is a cost of hockey in BG, and it does not need to be. The quality of the Ice isn't at issue. Renovated locker rooms are actually what people are looking for. They have them at venues all around the area, places that even allow groups to pay to customize and occupy them. People are not happy having to have girls changing in bathrooms, kids of various ages in hallways trying to get into gear, and the basically grungy quality of the existing lockers.

This isn't about going "Amish" with everything. This isn't baseball. People, especially ones who are paying dearly to keep a kid in a sport, expect a level of accommodation.

The point has also be made several times, that the Ice Arena has lost its ability to draw from beyond the local area, can't host events as it might have in the past. It is not viable.

I think the key phrase in the article was point #1 ... "1) The funds must be a meaningful part of a full plan to maintain the Ice arena." That seems to be a slap at the U, saying that there currently is not, or maybe never was, any sort of maintenance plan. The study committee could point that out without much reaction. The state, on the other hand, has the power of $$ to force a plan and commitment.

I would say the decline of the teams is because of the number of kids who no longer play fall football or soccer, winter basketball or hockey, and spring softball or baseball but instead now only play one sport year round.

I think the decline in sports is more a result of Wii, PS3, and XBox 360.

If you think Carter Park is dying, I suggest you go out there this weekend, as there are 70 teams from all over using the facility, as well as the high school district finals.
Number are down in "house leagues", but a good share of that is the increase in travel teams in the past 5-10 years, and the organizational structure of youth baseball with the different organizations. Carter Park is a quite busy place thru the month of June and into July, with tournaments most weekends thru the end of July.

More notably: for 2010-2011. A hint from the state, or a hedge?

Neither, that is just when the funds will be available.

And a good start. That's guaranteed money that even the University can't rescind.
